Bury star to take part in Manchester race TODAY alongside famous fiancé
A radio presenter and former soap star from Bury is set to run in a popular Manchester race this weekend alongside her fiancé – and they've already raised more than £13,000 for charity. Gemma Atkinson, 40, will be taking part in a 10k run this Sunday, May 18, while her fiancé Gorka Márquez, 34 is taking on the half marathon at the AJ Bell Great Manchester Run in the city centre. The pair met while on Strictly Come Dancing in 2017 and have two children together. Gemma is the president of Edenfield animal sanctuary Bleakholt and is using the event to fundraise for the renovation and extension of the cattery as part of 'Project Purr' which launched in March this year. The current cattery at Bleakholt can house around 70 cats but they have 'hundreds more' on the waiting list in need of help. The renovation, which is hoped to begin later this year, will transform the existing buildings, allowing the sanctuary to house at least another 100 cats while improving the welfare of the cats they look after. Together, Gemma and Gorka have raised an incredible £13,116 ahead of the run. Gemma said: "I am so proud that myself and Gorka have raised more than £13,000 for Bleakholt's Project Purrfect. "It means so much to us that we can play our part in ensuring Bleakholt help more stray, abandoned and neglected cats. "The run will be a test for both of us - but we are looking forward to it!" Bleakholt manager Karen Weed said: "We are so thankful to Gemma and Gorka for fundraising for 'Project Purrfect.' 'More cats than ever are being abandoned and neglected and the £300,000 renovation and extension of our cattery can make a difference. 'They have raised an amazing amount, which will all go into helping the cats in the area have a better life. Strictly Come Dancing's Gemma Atkinson opens up about home life without Gorka Marquez
Strictly Come Dancing's Gemma Atkinson opens up about home life without Gorka Marquez Former Strictly Come Dancing star Gemma Atkinson has shared an insight into her home life without professional dancer husband Gorka Marquez as the couple are regularly apart Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Marquez with their two children, Mia and Thiago (Image: Gemma Atkinson Instagram ) Gemma Atkinson has given fans a glimpse into her home life without husband Gorka Marquez, as the Strictly Come Dancing star is often away due to work commitments. The former Hollyoaks actress, 40, first met professional dancer Gorka when she took part in Strictly back in 2017. Gemma reached the final with partner Aljaz Skorjanec, while Gorka, 34, was paired with Alexandra Burke. Despite Joe McFadden taking home the Glitterball Trophy that year, it was Gemma and Gorka's relationship that truly won, blossoming into a beautiful family with their children Mia, five, and Thiago, 21 months, reports Lancs Live. In a recent interview with Closer magazine, Gemma opened up about her experiences of motherhood. She confessed that mornings with the kids used to be "stressful", but now they've "found their flow". She also spoke about what life is like when Gorka is away for Strictly. When asked who's better at getting the children dressed in the morning, she confidently said: "Definitely me." Article continues below Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Marquez (Image: Gemma Atkinson Instagram ) "Gorka's away with Strictly, so I'm on my own with them more. If he's doing Mia's hair, he'll do it beautifully - but it'll take about three or four attempts." However, Gemma insists that they're a "dream team" when together, with Gorka dressing Thiago in the mornings while she gets Mia ready. She shared: "If I'm making the beds, he'll be downstairs brewing up [the coffee]." The actress also revealed that playing music in the morning helps the family get ready. Mia's favourite song is Walk the Moon's Shut Up and Dance, while Gorka prefers Spanish reggaeton music. Gemma and Gorka are parents to Mia, five, and Thiago, almost two (Image: Instagram). (Image: Instagram ) Gemma Atkinson, a familiar face on British television for many years, has ruled out filming another series of 'Gemma and Gorka: Life Behind the Lens'. Despite enjoying the process of filming the show, she feels their life has become "boring" now. The Hits Radio host began her career as Carly Hunter on Hollyoaks from 2001 to 2005. She later took on the role of Carly Hope in Emmerdale between 2015 and 2017. While she is recognised by many for her modelling career, she has also featured in iconic British TV shows such as The Bill, Waterloo Road and Casualty. However, it seems a return to soaps isn't in the pipeline for Gemma. During an episode of the Parenting Hell podcast, comedian Josh Widdicombe asked Gemma if she would consider joining Corrie or EastEnders to complete the "clean sweep" of British TV. However, the star explained that the demands of soap work are challenging with children. She said: "Corrie I'd do, because it's half an hour away. I'd have to commute to EastEnders." Gemma Atkinson and Gorka Marquez with their two children Mia and Thiago (Image: UKTV ) Co-host Rob Beckett asked whether Gemma is considering a return to acting. She responded: "I'd love to do something like a drama, where there's a start date and an end date. Article continues below "I could do that now because you can plan around it. But with soap you get your schedule, and I loved it, I had a blast in them all, but I had no kids and no ties. "If they rang me up and said, 'You're due in, someone's called in sick, you need to be here in an hour', no problem. You'd get your schedule the night before and it can be from two hours a day to 15 hours a day, it can be all or nothing."
