'Ghost of Yōtei' Reveals Open World & Multi-Weapon Combat, And Limited Edition PlayStation Consoles
Sony and Sucker Punch Productions have unveiled a proper first-look at the upcoming open-world action-adventure sequel, Ghost of Yōtei , during a dedicated State of Play showcase for the game, offering a deep dive into the title's revamped world design and combat. The 20-minute gameplay presentation, narrated by Sucker Punch creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox, took fans through how the game has evolved in design since the studios acclaimed 2020 samurai adventure, Ghost of Tsushima . The trailer covered three major aspects of the upcoming game: Exploration, combat, and new gameplay modes. Perhaps the biggest shake-up to Ghost of Yōtei's core gameplay design compared to its predecessor is with regard to how players will progress through its open world. Ghost of Tsushima already featured a game-changing exploration system that integrated nature instead of the usual game HUD elements, but this time, the sequel takes things one step further, and according to Sucker Punch, 'focuses on player freedom more than any game'. Apart from returning elements such as yellow birds that will guide players to shrines that unlock abilities, Ghost of Yōtei will introduce a Clue system to tie together its main narrative instead of the usual waypoints, which direct players towards new locations depending on how they choose to explore the world. Clues can not only be gathered naturally during exploration, but also via interrogating enemies, which gives players a choice of multiple clues, each offering a new path and unique rewards to unlock. In the trailer, for example, players could choose between asking about the Oni, which unlocks the Ishikari Plain region and the Yari weapon, or the Kitsune, which unlocks the Teshio Ridge and the Kusarigama weapon. At any point while exploring, players can now pull out a spyglass to manually mark points of interest they come across, with the trailer teasing both returning side activities like Bamboo Strikes and Hot Springs, alongside new ones like painting, and a mini-game involving flicking coins across a table. Players will also be able to set up camps, which not only allows them to rest, cook food and play music, but also meet up with allies, a system which replaces the traditional journal known as Atsu's Wolf Pack, a more natural way to progress the story and build relationships with the supporting characters. With the game centred around protagonist Atsu's quest for vengeance against the Yōtei Six, a gang of ruffians who massacred her family, combat unsurprisingly plays a huge part in the experience. Unlike Jin Sakai from the previous game, Atsu isn't a samurai trained in honourable combat, giving her the freedom to use whatever tool and trick at her disposal to dispatch her foes. This leads to the game's revamped combat system, which revolves around the use of multiple weapons instead of different stances. Atsu will have access to five different melee weapons, including a traditional Katana, dual swords, a spear, a huge odachi and the kusarigama chain blade, each featuring its own moveset, upgrades, and effectiveness against different types of foes. Combat seems to offer the same familiar feel as the first title, although it has received a few new additions, such as a disarming system, a timing-based deflection technique similar to a parry that can disarm an enemy when timed correctly, or if not, can lead to Astu being disarmed herself. Ranged combat has also seen a new addition in the form of a rifle, with the trailer also teasing a companion system, showing the example of a wolf that assists in combat Ghost of Yōtei will also see the return of the fan-favourite Kurosawa Mode, alongside two new ways to play: Miike Mode, inspired by 13 Assassins director Takashi Miike, which pulls the game's camera in closer during combat while ramping up blood and mud effects, and Watanabe Mode, which features the audio works of Samurai Champloo anime director Shinichirō Watanabe, offering original lo-fi tracks to accompany exploration and combat. In a final surprise reveal, Sucker Punch also announced a special edition Ghost of Yōtei PS5 console and unique DualSense controllers, both which will be available at launch, further confirming the studio's confidence for Ghost of Yōtei to be one of the biggest game launches this year when it releases on 2 October 2025 for the PS5. 'Astro Bot' Finally Gets Square Enix Representation In Free Update
All right, everyone, let's mosey, as a long-requested character is finally coming to Astro Bot . The latest free update for Team Asobi's adorable platformer will add five new challenge levels to the Vicious Void Galaxy map, bringing the total number of levels to over 90, with more secret bots to rescue. While the name of one stage remains a secret, the other four are confirmed to be Twin-Frog Trouble, Suck It Up, Handhold Havoc, High Inflation. Atsu, the protagonist from Sucker Punch's forthcoming Ghost of Yōtei , has been announced as part of the bot lineup (coinciding with the PlayStation State of Play presentation focusing on the highly anticipated sequel to 2020's Ghost of Tsushima ), alongside two all-too-familiar faces: Cloud and Sephiroth. The former shows up after completing High Inflation, and beating all five new levels unlocks the One-Winged Angel. The iconic Final Fantasy VII pair are hardly the only Square Enix representation — 2B from Nier: Automata and Chrono Cross ' Serge are also due for a cameo in the game. It's a (final) fantasy come true for fans, who have been clamouring for their addition since launch. Astro Bot debuted with a whopping 173 cameos across PlayStation history, from more niche titles like LocoRoco and Legacy of Kain to popular franchises spanning God of War , Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn, and more, so the lack of Final Fantasy VII , traditionally associated with the brand in both the 1997 oriinal and remake forms, came as a surprise then. It sure took a while, but hey, better late than never. Astro Bot has received multiple free updates since its release in September last year, and continues to be a shining example of success despite its apparent AA scale. The PS5 exclusive beat various AAA titles to clinch four awards at last year's The Game Awards, with Team Asobi president Nicolas Doucet attributing its success to smaller-scale development. Si Jia is a casual geek at heart – or as casual as someone with Sephiroth's theme on her Spotify playlist can get. A fan of movies, games, and Japanese culture, Si Jia's greatest weakness is the Steam Summer Sale. Or any Steam sale, really. Astro Bot Final Fantasy VII Square Enix Team Asobi

Ghost Of Yotei's Gameplay Trailer: This sequel might have outdone its predecessor in one swift blow. Watch
It's tough to cement yourself as a proper franchise in the gaming world because, in all honesty, there are already too many of those. Another formidable task to take on is making an open-world game, and that too is difficult for the same reasons. Competing with legendary franchises like GTA, God of War, and Far Cry might be something game developers would duck from, but the people over at Sucker Punch Productions are definitely not running away from a fight. They have just released the gameplay trailer for their upcoming title Ghost Of Yotei, and it looks like the game might break the records held by the beloved and moving Ghost Of Tsushima. The developers provide an insight into the whole story behind the game while describing all the different features that have been made available for the users. The protagonist of the story is a woman named Atsu, who is returning to her hometown after 16 years in order to take revenge for her family's death. The developers have pulled from Japanese myths and legends, and Atsu is believed to be an onryō. According to Japanese folklore, an onryō is a spirit that is driven by wrath and thirst for revenge. As Atsu moves forward in her journey, her ghost legend will only grow, as will the bounty on her head, inviting more challenging foes as the game proceeds. ALSO READ: 007 First Light announcement trailer: James Bond is a bullet looking for a target in the new game, watch In order to level up her prowess as a fighter, the players will need to find certain clues to hidden areas of the game. They can also stumble upon secret locations titled 'Altars of Reflection', which will inspire Atsu and will give the players the ability to choose a new skill. The developers claim to have made a world that can suit everyone's playing style like a perfect glove. The players will be able to choose whether they want to explore the world, focus on the main story, or complete other side quests. This does beg the question if players will be able to level up Atsu before getting very far in the main storyline or maybe before even starting it. The weapon arsenal available is wide and varied, including katanas, spears, kusarigama, odachi, and dual swords. Their weapons have a personality of their own, as different weapons will be effective in particular situations, and all weapons will have their own skill tree to climb. In her pursuit of the Yotei Six, the group of mercenaries that killed her family, Atsu can act as a bounty hunter, investigator or just a straight-up punisher. The developers say that the entire experience will be slow, and they will not be rushing the players through anything; in fact, they encourage the players to go exploring and take the game forward one discovery at a time. The game will be coming out on PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025.

Ghost of Yōtei's gameplay deep dive shows the open world, combat, and chill beats
We just got a good, long look at PlayStation's next major exclusive. As promised, Sony held an event dedicated to Ghost of Yōtei, the PS5-exclusive samurai game from Sucker Punch that launches on October 2nd. The stream was a deep dive exploring everything from combat to the world itself — and it's looking like an impressive step up from its predecessor. You can watch the full presentation in the video above. The story is inspired in part by the folklore creature known as an onryō, a sort of vengeful spirit which seems to fit the themes of the game pretty well. It is, after all, about a ronin named Atsu who spends the game hunting down the six outlaws who killed her family when she was young. As the hunt progresses, Atsu takes up the onryō moniker, and her legend grows over time. Sucker Punch says that the open world is designed around player choice, letting you focus on specific gameplay elements — like exploration or combat — based on what you're interested in. 'Ghost of Yōtei isn't going to rush you through anything,' the developers explain. Like its predecessor, the world also looks beautiful, with a lush landscape to explore; it's set in Ezo (what's now known as Hokkaido) in 1603. As for combat, the team says the goal is to create the feel of a 'classic samurai movie.' Oh, and this time you get to partner up with a wolf. Yōtei will feature what looks like an expanded photo mode, and will once again include 'Kurosawa mode,' which renders the game in black-and-white like a classic Akira Kurosawa movie. But Sucker Punch also partnered with other notable directors. There's now a 'Miike mode' (inspired by Takashi Miike) for more visceral, close-up, and bloody action, along with a lo-fi 'Watanabe mode' with chill beats inspired by Shinichirō Watanabe. Yōtei is a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, which served as a swan song of sorts for the PS4 when it launched in 2020. Enhanced versions of the game eventually made their way to the PC and PS5, and it was successful enough that the director of John Wick is attached to a film adaptation. The sequel is particularly notable because 2025 has been a relatively quiet year for major PS5 exclusives. Another sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, just launched last month, but there isn't much else in the schedule aside from a remastered version of the biker zombie game Days Gone. Bungie's revamp of Marathon was originally expected in September but has since been delayed.
