'Ghost of Yōtei' Reveals Open World & Multi-Weapon Combat, And Limited Edition PlayStation Consoles

Geek Culture11-07-2025
Sony and Sucker Punch Productions have unveiled a proper first-look at the upcoming open-world action-adventure sequel, Ghost of Yōtei , during a dedicated State of Play showcase for the game, offering a deep dive into the title's revamped world design and combat.
The 20-minute gameplay presentation, narrated by Sucker Punch creative directors Jason Connell and Nate Fox, took fans through how the game has evolved in design since the studios acclaimed 2020 samurai adventure, Ghost of Tsushima . The trailer covered three major aspects of the upcoming game: Exploration, combat, and new gameplay modes.
Perhaps the biggest shake-up to Ghost of Yōtei's core gameplay design compared to its predecessor is with regard to how players will progress through its open world. Ghost of Tsushima already featured a game-changing exploration system that integrated nature instead of the usual game HUD elements, but this time, the sequel takes things one step further, and according to Sucker Punch, 'focuses on player freedom more than any game'.
Apart from returning elements such as yellow birds that will guide players to shrines that unlock abilities, Ghost of Yōtei will introduce a Clue system to tie together its main narrative instead of the usual waypoints, which direct players towards new locations depending on how they choose to explore the world. Clues can not only be gathered naturally during exploration, but also via interrogating enemies, which gives players a choice of multiple clues, each offering a new path and unique rewards to unlock. In the trailer, for example, players could choose between asking about the Oni, which unlocks the Ishikari Plain region and the Yari weapon, or the Kitsune, which unlocks the Teshio Ridge and the Kusarigama weapon.
At any point while exploring, players can now pull out a spyglass to manually mark points of interest they come across, with the trailer teasing both returning side activities like Bamboo Strikes and Hot Springs, alongside new ones like painting, and a mini-game involving flicking coins across a table. Players will also be able to set up camps, which not only allows them to rest, cook food and play music, but also meet up with allies, a system which replaces the traditional journal known as Atsu's Wolf Pack, a more natural way to progress the story and build relationships with the supporting characters.
With the game centred around protagonist Atsu's quest for vengeance against the Yōtei Six, a gang of ruffians who massacred her family, combat unsurprisingly plays a huge part in the experience. Unlike Jin Sakai from the previous game, Atsu isn't a samurai trained in honourable combat, giving her the freedom to use whatever tool and trick at her disposal to dispatch her foes.
This leads to the game's revamped combat system, which revolves around the use of multiple weapons instead of different stances. Atsu will have access to five different melee weapons, including a traditional Katana, dual swords, a spear, a huge odachi and the kusarigama chain blade, each featuring its own moveset, upgrades, and effectiveness against different types of foes.
Combat seems to offer the same familiar feel as the first title, although it has received a few new additions, such as a disarming system, a timing-based deflection technique similar to a parry that can disarm an enemy when timed correctly, or if not, can lead to Astu being disarmed herself. Ranged combat has also seen a new addition in the form of a rifle, with the trailer also teasing a companion system, showing the example of a wolf that assists in combat
Ghost of Yōtei will also see the return of the fan-favourite Kurosawa Mode, alongside two new ways to play: Miike Mode, inspired by 13 Assassins director Takashi Miike, which pulls the game's camera in closer during combat while ramping up blood and mud effects, and Watanabe Mode, which features the audio works of Samurai Champloo anime director Shinichirō Watanabe, offering original lo-fi tracks to accompany exploration and combat.
In a final surprise reveal, Sucker Punch also announced a special edition Ghost of Yōtei PS5 console and unique DualSense controllers, both which will be available at launch, further confirming the studio's confidence for Ghost of Yōtei to be one of the biggest game launches this year when it releases on 2 October 2025 for the PS5.

'Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle' Shatters Record For Fastest Film To Hit ¥10 Billion In Japan

Nothing can stand in the way of the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle , as it continues to take the Japanese box office by storm. Following a record-breaking opening haul at the domestic box office, the anime pic has grossed 12.8 billion yen (US$87.1 million) in its first 10 days, becoming the fastest film to cross 10 billion yen (US$67.4 million) in the country. The previous record holder was held by 2020's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie –Infinity Train , which is also currently the top-grossing film of all time in Japan after 73 days at the box office. Of a listed total earnings of 40.43 billion yen (US$273 million) domestically, 4.6 billion yen (US$43.85 million at the time) came from its first three days, including 1.2 billion yen (US$12.03 million at the time) from the opening day alone. In comparison, Infinity Castle earned 5.5 billion (US$37.38 million) yen in its first three days and racked up 7.3 billion yen (US$49.50 million) over a four-day long weekend. It's a very strong start for the first film in a planned trilogy, with its opening week soaring way past expectations, but the success was already mapped out since the beginning. The trailer debut registered more than 40 million views within 24 hours on official social media platforms, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle now holds three major all-time records: the highest opening performance, the biggest first-day earnings, and the strongest single-day box office in Japanese film history. Releasing on 14 August in Singapore, it picks up after the finale of the fourth anime season, when Muzan Kibutsuji (Toshihiko Seki / Greg Chun) traps Tanjiro Kamado (Natsuki Hanae / Zach Aguliar) and his companions of the Demon Slayer Corps inside his fortress, the Infinity Castle, where a decisive battle between the Demon Slayers and Muzan's subordinates, the Upper Moons, kicks off. Infinity Train 's Haruo Sotozaki is directing the movie at returning studio ufotable, with Aimer and LiSA performing the songs 'Taiyō ga Noboranai Sekai' ('A World Where the Sun Never Rises') and 'Zankoku no Yoru ni Kagayake' ('Shine in the Cruel Night'), respectively. It will screen in IMAX and both Japanese with English subtitles, as well as in English dub. The fourth movie in the lineup serves more as a feature-length multi-film adaptation like Mugen Train instead of the Swordsmith Village and Hashira Training compilation films, and is set to adapt the first part of the final arc of Koyoharu Gotoge's manga. It opens in theatres on 14 August. Si Jia is a casual geek at heart – or as casual as someone with Sephiroth's theme on her Spotify playlist can get. La Tendo's Anime Café, Dimension Poptown, Opens With 'Heaven's Official Blessing' Collaboration In Singapore

For anime and video game aficionados in Singapore, there's no more familiar name than La Tendo. The retail store in Suntec City Mall has grown into a crowd favourite with its wide range of merchandise, including action figures, model kits, can badges, and more, that seeks to satisfy different interests and niches. Now, the brand is setting its sights on a new expansion effort: food. Enter its first anime collaboration café, Dimension Poptown Café, complete with a new theme for every cycle. But there's a catch – the menu is entirely vegetarian-friendly, and its Heaven Official's Blessing opener tie-up offered a promising taste of its future. While collaboration cafés have traditionally focused on experience over food quality, the cosy space, surprisingly enough, features a balance of both. A queue could be seen on its opening day, 25 July, with a cutout of Hua Cheng and Xie Lian greeting fans at the entrance. The merchandise area is nestled behind, where coasters, acrylic stands, prints, blind bag badges, and more can be purchased. Along the way, posters and key visuals of the pair adorn the walls and tables, as visitors are ushered to their seats. Food orders are placed at the front counter, and once done, all that's left is to wait for the dishes to arrive. In any case, there won't be a shortage of visual appeal. Most, if not all, of the menu items bear traces of red/black and white/gold – the main colours of Hua Cheng and Xie Lian, respectively – with the contrast adding to the striking look. Each purchase includes exclusive collaboration merchandise, categorised by the type of food: placemats for the main-course dishes, photo cards for desserts, and acrylic coasters for refreshments. Drinks are priced at S$9 each, coming up to six in total: Fragrance of the Frost (passionfruit with probiotics soda), Elation (mixed berries soda), Golden Elixir of the Osmanthus (honey osmanthus), Dew of the Roselle (rose mixed berry soda), Pure Nectar of the Immortal (mango coconut milk), and Snow-capped Plum Blossoms (strawberry milk foam). As for the remaining dishes, here are the details: Main Dishes (S$24 each) Rendezvous of Sun and Moon: Taro with Golden Mushroom and Konjac Soy Meat, served with Red Rice Roll Match Made in Heaven : Soya meat pieces with green and red peppers, served with Chinese yam, Lily Bulb Soya Milk and Oat Fluttering Amongst the Flowers: Egg crepe, served with cherries Desserts (S$26 each) Beneath the Peach Tree: Fluffy shaved ice with strawberry Token of Trust: Donut cakes, served with vanilla and strawberry ice cream Wishing Lanterns atop the Cityscape: Maple Leaf Cake, served with Flower Mousse The entire lineup was a surprise delight for the taste buds, leaving nothing but satisfaction in its wake. Alongside Rendezvous of Sun and Moon, or more specifically, the red rice roll, the standouts for the other two series are Beneath the Peach Tree, which impressed with a light yet sweet taste profile, and the tooth-shaped Elation, striking a balance between effervescence and fruity tones. The La Tendo X Dimension Poptown anime café collaboration with Heaven's Official Blessing is underway at 3 Temasek Blvd, #03-347, Singapore 038983.
