Andrew Thomas opens up training camp on PUP list in Giants concern

The Giants know left tackle Andrew Thomas is one of their most indispensable players. They also know they need to keep him healthy, and that has proved to be problematic. As the team hits the field Wednesday for the first practice of training camp, Thomas will not be taking his spot on the offensive line. Advertisement He opens up camp on the physically unable to perform list. Thomas was limited to only six games last season before he went down with a Lisfranc injury that required foot surgery. In 2023, Thomas played in only 10 games, as he was forced out with a serious hamstring strain. It is believed this will not be a long-term stay on PUP for Thomas — at this point, the Giants are considering him day to day. Advertisement A recent comment about his availability for the regular-season opener did raise a few eyebrows. Giants offensive tackle Andrew Thomas (78) has landed on the PUP list. Bill Kostroun/New York Post 'I'm feeling good,'' Thomas told the team's in-house 'Giants Huddle' podcast. 'Just taking my time with it. Don't really have a projection right now, but I'm doing everything that the trainers are telling me and hopefully, I am ready to go.'' Lane Kiffin Makes Exciting Comparison for NY Giants' Jaxson Dart

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Soon, the New York Giants will fire up a new quarterback era. Jaxson Dart will be the one to take the lead. Coming out of Ole Miss, Dart travels a similar path as the franchise's legendary quarterback, Eli Manning. Perhaps the comparisons helped the Giants make their decision to trade back into the first round during the 2025 NFL Draft to select Dart. Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin recently suggested that Dart has "a lot of Eli Manning in him" on the 'Giants Huddle' podcast. For Giants fans, that's certainly an exciting comparison. Manning played 43 games at Ole Miss before entering the NFL in 2004. He wrapped up his college career with over 10,000 passing yards and an 81-35 touchdown-interception ratio. When Manning reached the 2004 NFL Draft, he was selected first overall by the San Diego Chargers. The quarterback famously refused to play for them. As a result, the Chargers eventually had to swap out Manning for Philip Rivers and several other assets. Jaxson Dart #2 of the Mississippi Rebels participates in a drill during Ole Miss Pro Day at the Manning Athletic Center on March 28, 2025 in Oxford, wasn't the full-time starter right away, but he started seven games during his rookie season. From that point on, he led the Giants until he was benched after four games during the 2019 NFL season. The Giants rolled with Daniel Jones for several seasons, but put an end to that era during the 2024 NFL season. They hope that Dart can eventually take over. For the time being, Dart will hold the clipboard as a rookie, just as Manning did at first. Dart enters the NFL after a 45-game run in the NCAA. Six of those games came at USC when he was a freshman. During Dart's 2023 season, he helped Ole Miss achieve a record of 11-2. He threw for 3,364 yards on 65 percent passing accuracy. Dart tossed 23 touchdowns and just five interceptions. Last year, Dart completed nearly 70 percent of his passes while totaling 4,279 yards. He totaled 29 touchdowns while throwing just six interceptions. Entering the NFL, Kiffin suggests that Dart is the "complete package" for the Giants. And even if the young quarterback is going through growing pains, the college coach strongly believes he's got the tools to overcome it. "If he is struggling with something, he's going to find a way," Kiffin added. "He's going to stay after. He's going to do whatever it takes." Dart had the opportunity to work directly with Kiffin, along with former Giants head coach Joe Judge. Dart recently spoke on Judge's impact in helping the young quarterback prepare for the next level through on-field preparation and film study. This week, Dart will pair up with Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston to compete in his first NFL training camp. While Wilson is expected to start the year for the Giants, every snap will be important for Dart, as winning the backup position behind a one-year rental could lead to a major opportunity in year one. New York Giants' Jon Runyan Jr. reveals he underwent ankle surgery in December

New York Giants left guard Jon Runyan Jr. is expected to reprise his role as the starter again, but he revealed an interesting tidbit about how his season ended last year. After starting the first 13 games for New York, Runyan suffered an ankle injury during the Week 13 game against the New Orleans Saints. It effectively ended his season, forcing him to miss the final four games of the campaign. In a recent appearance on the Giants Huddle podcast, Runyan revealed he underwent surgery in December to repair the injury. "Yep, had surgery back in mid-December," Runyan said. "Stayed up here the whole offseason. We have a great training staff, great doctors that helped me along the way." General manager Joe Schoen hinted at Runyan being ready to go for the spring earlier this offseason despite missing the final month of the season. Going into the second of a three-year deal worth $30 million, Runyan allowed 29 total pressures, including two sacks across 541 pass-blocking snaps, per Pro Football Focus. He was also given a modest 52.3 run-blocking grade before the injury. The Giants' offensive line will be under the microscope yet again, and Runyan will be a key piece of the unit for the upcoming campaign.

Lane Kiffin: New York Giants' Jaxson Dart is the total package

What are the New York Giants getting in rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart? Well, his former college coach at Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin, believes Big Blue could be getting an elite player. Kiffin, who coached Dart for three seasons at Ole Miss, sees him as the "complete package" who is a "quick learner." "If he is struggling with something, he's going to find a way. He's going to stay after. He's going to do whatever it takes," Kiffin said in a recent appearance on the Giants Huddle podcast. Kiffin also said that Dart is excellent at processing large chunks of information very quickly. "I think for some that can be too much information because we're 'chunking' him a lot of information," Kiffin said. "And most of our plays are snapped before 15 [seconds on the play clock], so he's getting a lot of information right up to the snap. He was great with that." Kiffin said that Dart has a lot of Eli Manning in him, but also has an aggressive element to his game. His father was a defensive player at Utah, and Dart sometimes opts to take unnecessary hits rather than live to play another day. "We worked with him a lot on that," Kiffin said. "That takes some time to get out of him. It'll still show up once in a while, but he's learned to play times throughout the week, he's very calm." The Giants plan on bringing Dart along slowly, as there is no need to throw him to the lions right away. They have two veteran quarterbacks in front of him in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, and will not play Dart until the time is right.

New York Giants' Rakeem Nunez-Roches offers blunt solution to fix run defense

The New York Giants' defensive line got a wake-up call when stud nose tackle Dexter Lawrence was not on the field in 2024. This offseason general maanger Joe Schoen added a few more pieces that should address the depth issues, but the returning core needs to step up their collective games. Veteran Rakeem Nunez-Roches recently said on the Giants Huddle podcast that he and his linemates must band together and communicate better to have a cohesive unit. "To be honest with you, a simple fix: Just do your job," Nacho said. "The biggest thing last year was sometimes you felt like you had to do somebody else's job or compensate because of a lack of trust. "This year, I feel like taking that step together and believing in one another. Like, hey, 'I'm going to do my part and you do your part.'" The Giants relied heavlily on Lawrence up front last season until he was lost for the year in Week 13 with a dislocated elbow. Lawrence played on nearly 80 percent of the defensive snaps to that point and the Giants were last agaisnt the rush, yielding 5.2 yards per attempt. The line actually played better against the run after Lawrence went on season-ending injured reserve (IR). This season the Giants hope to lessen Lawrence's workload, bringing in veterans such as Ray Robertson-Harris and Jeremiah Ledbetter to take some snaps in the rotation. The best-case scenario, however, is that third round pick Darius Alexander can come in and be effecive early on.
