Andrew Thomas opens up training camp on PUP list in Giants concern

New York Post7 days ago
The Giants know left tackle Andrew Thomas is one of their most indispensable players. They also know they need to keep him healthy, and that has proved to be problematic.
As the team hits the field Wednesday for the first practice of training camp, Thomas will not be taking his spot on the offensive line.

Thomas was limited to only six games last season before he went down with a Lisfranc injury that required foot surgery.
In 2023, Thomas played in only 10 games, as he was forced out with a serious hamstring strain.
It is believed this will not be a long-term stay on PUP for Thomas — at this point, the Giants are considering him day to day.

A recent comment about his availability for the regular-season opener did raise a few eyebrows.

'I'm feeling good,'' Thomas told the team's in-house 'Giants Huddle' podcast. 'Just taking my time with it. Don't really have a projection right now, but I'm doing everything that the trainers are telling me and hopefully, I am ready to go.''

The Giants also put running back Eric Gray on PUP, put outside linebacker Victor Dimukeje on the non-football injury list and waived/injured safety Anthony Johnson Jr.

Two former LSU wide receivers named to NFL's top 100 players list after rookie years

Former LSU wide receivers Brian Thomas Jr. and Malik Nabers cracked top 100 players list. The pair checked in at No. 61 and No. 67, respectively. Both are coming off rookie seasons in which they garnered support for the offensive rookie of the year honor. In the 2024 NFL Draft, Nabers went No. 6 overall to the New York Giants while Thomas went No. 23 overall to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Thomas played and started in 17 games and averaged 14.7 yards per reception. He set franchise rookie records with 87 receptions, 1,282 receiving yards and 10 receiving touchdowns en route to earning a Pro Bowl selection. His receiving yards and touchdowns led all rookies in 2024. Despite dealing with a revolving door at quarterback, Nabers became a consistent talent for the Giants. In 15 games, he totaled 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns on 109 receptions. He averaged 11 yards per catch. New York Giants could recoup draft pick from Miami if Darren Waller produces

Veteran tight end Darren Waller surprised many in early July when he informed the New York Giants of his plans to unretire, but only if they shipped him off to the Miami Dolphins. The Giants obliged. General manager Joe Schoen traded Waller and a conditional 2027 seventh-round pick to Miami in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 NFL draft. But that deal is not entirely set in stone. Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports that if Waller records 50-plus receptions in 2025, the Giants will recoup their seventh-round pick in the 2027 NFL draft. In 12 games (11 starts) with New York, Waller recorded 52 receptions for 552 yards and one touchdown, so it is plausible he produces similar numbers with the Dolphins, and the Giants get their pick back. Waller initially informed the Giants of his retirement in June 2024, a year removed from the team acquiring him in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders. However, he later revealed that his initial decision to retire came much sooner than that. "I knew I was retiring when we played in Buffalo," Waller said on The Side You Don't See podcast. "It was a game where it was really controversial because one of the guys held me at the end, and they didn't call it. "It was in the first quarter of the game. We were running this counter lead running play, and I'm kind of like leading through the hole like I'm a fullback, and the play is working. But I sit down on the sideline after like a drive where we ran like three times and I'm like, what the (expletive) am I doing with my life? I'm out here playing fullback. I don't even want to do this (expletive) anymore." What changed in Waller's mind is unclear.
