Rough times for broadcast networks illustrate changing landscape

New York: Two milestones revealed this week illustrate the diminishing power of broadcast television in the media world - one fuelled by the habits of young people and the other by their elders. During June, viewers spent more time watching streaming services than they did for broadcast and cable television combined. That happened for the first time ever in May, by a fraction of a percentage point, but the Nielsen company said on Tuesday that gap widened considerably in June. Also, for the third straight week, Nielsen said that Fox News Channel had more viewers in prime-time on weeknights than any of the main the broadcast networks ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox entertainment. For years, the mantra of media executives was that streaming represented the future for in-home entertainment. Now, that future has clearly arrived. Broadcast TV slips below 20 % of total In June, 46 % of Americans' TV time was spent on streaming services, led by YouTube and Netflix . Cable television networks represented 23.4 % and broadcast was 18.5 %, for a total of just under 42 %, Nielsen said. It was the first time broadcast TV had ever slipped below 20 % of total TV viewing. "It kind of felt like the right time," said Brian Fuhrer, Nielsen's senior vice president for product strategy and thought leadership. "A lot of people thought it would happen more quickly." The driving force in June was school ending for young people, meaning they had more time to watch TV, where Netflix series like "Ginny and Georgia" and "Squid Game" were big hits. Roughly two-thirds of people aged 6 to 17 watched streaming ahead of conventional TV, Nielsen said. In June 2024, the numbers were roughly reversed - 47.7 % of people were watching conventional TV in an average minute, with 40.3 % logged on to a streaming service. While the direction is clear, it's not a death knell for conventional TV. June and July are fallow months, and their viewing will increase when football season begins and original episodes of comedies and dramas return, Fuhrer said. Content is distributed over more platforms It's also not a strict either-or situation; media companies are doing a better job spreading their content out on different platforms to give viewers a choice, he said. The growth of YouTube, which many consumers can access for free and is a portal for "traditional" TV, has also fuelled streaming services. Fox News has occasionally eclipsed the broadcast networks in viewership before, but last week represented the seventh week it has done so in 2025, already more than 2024 and 2023 combined. It averaged 2.4 million viewers in prime time on weeknights last week, Nielsen said. Fox News is also taking advantage of what is traditionally the least-watched time of the year for broadcast networks, when summer nights and barbecues keep people outside. The difference this year is it has won a few weeks outside of the summer, during President Donald Trump's inauguration week in January, for example. Its audience - among the oldest of all television networks - tends to stay pretty steady throughout the year. (AP)

Virgin River season 7 leaks confirm huge first for Netflix series as fans ‘uncover' Mel twist

A recent set photo seemingly confirms a game-changing new storyline for Virgin River's Mel Monroe Warning - this article contains major potential spoilers for Virgin River season 7. A shocking twist might be in store for fans of Virgin River in its seventh season, as a recently surfaced set photo seems to confirm a major new development in the storyline. ‌ Following the conclusion of filming in Vancouver for the upcoming season of the hit Netflix series, production has reportedly shifted to Mexico this week - marking the show's first time filming outside of Canada. ‌ According to What's On Netflix, the change in filming location has led to speculation that the show might be capturing Mel Monroe (played by Alexandra Breckenridge) and Jack Sheridan's (Martin Henderson) honeymoon on camera. A recent sighting of Breckenridge in Mexico appears to support these claims, sparking a flurry of excitement and speculation, reports the Mirror US. In the photo, the actress is seen sporting a red top and a floral wrap skirt, which some viewers suspect might be concealing a significant plot twist. "They're filming in Mexico right now," stated the Redditor who shared the image. "Does that look like a baby-bump? People have been saying so on Instagram." ‌ If Mel does turn out to be pregnant by the end of season seven, it could lead to multiple babies for Mel and Jack to care for in upcoming episodes. Not only did Charmaine (Lauren Hammersley) vanish shortly after the birth of her twins, but Mel received a stunning offer from her patient Marley (Rachel Drance) in the season finale. After the couple initially lined up to adopt Marley's baby backed out, she's now certain that Mel is the only viable candidate to assume the role of parent. ‌ "So she's going to have the adoption baby, Charmaine's twins and her own (maybe) all at once," one fan responded. However, another speculated: "She's definitely pregnant! They'll adopt the one baby but not Charmaine's!" ‌ Ginny and Georgia season 3 - Get Netflix free with Sky This article contains affiliate links, we will receive a commission on any sales we generate from it. Scott Porter admits Ginny and Georgia success surpassed expectations

Scott Porter has been surprised by the success of Ginny and Georgia. The 45-year-old actor has played Mayor Paul Randolph in the hit Netflix series since 2021, and he admits that the show has surpassed his own expectations. Asked about the show's long-term future, Scott told Us Weekly: "Our creator, Sarah [Lampert], is an infinite well of stories. I'm sure we could spin this thing for an awful long time. "And it's up to Netflix on whether or not we continue on. But, let me just say to our viewers, thank you so much for tuning in over these first three seasons. We never expected the show to be a hit the way that it is — and it's all because of you all. So thank you." The show - which follows a young single mother who tries to run away from her past - has already been renewed for a fourth season, and Scott still loves working on Ginny and Georgia. He shared: "I trust [the writers]. They are mapping out a show that's unlike anything I've ever been on before. The twists, the turns, the cliffhangers and it works. "So these scenes, my No. 1 word for this season and for me filling the shoes of Paul is 'intimidating.' I was intimidated with some of the stuff they presented me with and I wasn't sure if I could keep up with our two leads who were so incredible. "When they're asking Paul to reach these emotional depths, falling apart in front of our eyes and letting a little bit of his inner darkness out, I was intimidated." Scott has also revealed his hopes for his own character in season four. The actor said: "There's parts of Paul we still don't understand and we haven't seen. So his resilience and how he rebounds from this in season four, I'd love to see some of that. I'd love to see a little bit of the old Paul. "We've heard how good he is at his job. He was elected mayor before Georgia ever walked into his life. I'd love to see that fight, that wit, that charm come back a little bit in season four."
