Augustana softball geared up Super Regionals run

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Augustana softball team reached the NCAA Regionals and found success winning all three games. Now, the Vikings are off to the Super Regionals. The Vikings won the NSIC Tournament in early May, and that success continued into the NCAA Central Regional. The victories didn't come easy as the first two games saw a combined eight extra innings. 'Any sort of win that you can get down there is a huge win,' Augustana pitcher Grace Glanzer said. 'So we didn't care how it looked, what it looked like. I mean, it'd be great to have it a different way, a more quicker game than what we had. But, what matters is that we came out on top, and then we're here and we're moving on to the next part of our season.' Augustana didn't get to host in the regionals, but pitcher Grace Glanzer says the travel helped build the teams togetherness. 'Honestly, there is some fun in traveling postseason,' Glanzer said. 'You eat as a team, you travel as a team, you do everything as a team. There's some fun in that. A lot of memories that are made. So, we took it as it is and we embraced it. And that's, I think why we came out on top this weekend.' 'Don't give in,' Augustana head coach Gretta Melsted said. 'Keep competing, keep pushing, keep throwing punches, keep going after it. Because eventually something is going to fall, or if it doesn't fall, at least you gave everything you had.' The Vikings found unique ways to score runs in the regional, but as coach Melsted knows, any offense is key this time of the year. 'When you get to this time of year, you're going to face those pitchers that are going to shut down that offense or limit your opportunities. So you have to win in different ways, whether that is getting hit by a pitch, whether that is taking a walk, you have to be able to win in multiple different ways.' Augustana will meet Central Oklahoma Thursday, May 15th. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. central time. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Augustana Softball sweeps Beavers on Senior Day

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Augustana) – Augustana softball sandwiched its Senior Day celebrations between what would become back-to-back 8-2 and 4-2 victories over Bemidji State in doubleheader action at Bowden Field. The Vikings improve to 37-9 overall and 19-3 in conference action while the Beavers drop to 16-26 and 3-15. Between games one and two, the Vikings celebrated in four softball seniors. Hailey Houston, Lexi Lander, Liz Dierks and Grace Glanzer were all honored for their on and off-field contributions to the program throughout their careers. GAME ONE: No. 14 Augustana 8, Bemidji State 2Three total homeruns—with two bringing in multiple runs—and a rocketing showing at the plate from Desi Cuevas helped power the Vikings over their opponents to secure the 8-2 win. Glanzer downed the first three batters of the contest with three straight strikeouts to welcome Augustana to the plate. Andrea Cain made the most of her first at-bat, smash a homerun to center field to officially kick off scoring. The 1-0 lead held with help from Glanzer's continually strong pitching until the bottom of the third. Cuevas knocked a double to left center and eventually made it to third base after back-to-back fly outs. Ella Cooper stepped up to bat and rocketed a two-run homer over the left center fence to push the home team ahead at 3-0. Bemidji State hit back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning, but would get no further. Augustana loaded up the bases in response after a single, a hit by pitch and a fielder's choice. Cuevas then sent a shot through the right side that brought in two of those runners for the 5-3 advantage. Both the Vikings and Beavers were downed in order in the fifth inning but AU continued to fight in the sixth. Sidney Smart with hit by pitch and advanced to second base off a single from Cain. With two runners on base, Cuevas slammed a three-run homer to left field. The shot, following by three straight outs in the top of the seventh, helped secure the 8-2 victory. Cuevas led with a 3-for-4 showing alongside five RBI as Cain and Cooper each added in two hits and Norah Christiansen and Ashton Dorman each logged one apiece. Cooper tallied nine putouts while Smart registered the lone stolen base of the game. In the circle, Glanzer took the win to improve to 18-6 so far this season. She collected nine strikeouts through six innings of work and didn't allow an earned run. GAME TWO: No. 14 Augustana 4, Bemidji State 2The Vikings completed the sweep with only two innings of scoring in game two to fend off the Beaver fight and take home the 4-2 win. Bemidji State scored first with a run in the top of the first inning and ended up holding that lead until the bottom of the second. Cooper kicked off that half of action with a single through the right side before advancing to second off a groundout and scoring off a base hit up the middle from Stella Harber. With the game now tied, Smart slammed a two-run homer to left field to officially take the lead at 3-1. BSU loaded the bases in the top of the fourth but only scored one run to close in at 3-2. Until Dierks stepped up to bat in the fifth. In her first pitch of the at-bat, the senior from Sioux Falls, S.D. rocketed a soaring shot out of the park and over the left center fence to force a 4-2 score. It was Dierks' first career homerun and served as the perfect closer for the conference sweep on Senior Day. Five Vikings combined to tally the five team hits as Smart collected two RBI. Cain and Dierks each drew walks and Dierks also logged the lone stolen base. Lander took the win in the circle in her seven innings pitched. She totaled three strikeouts and allowed just one earned run as she improved to 16-3 this season. UP NEXTIn its final home weekend of the regular season, Augustana will host Concordia-St. Paul on Friday, April 18 and Winona State on Saturday, April 19 at Bowden Field. Voters in cities of Newberry, Alachua elect new leadership

In their municipal elections, residents of the cities of Newberry and Alachua on Tuesday cast their votes and elected new mayors and city commissioners In Newberry, City Commissioner Tim Marden, who decided not to run for reelection and seek the town's mayoral seat, defeated challenger Joy Glanzer, receiving 885 of the total 1,673 votes cast. In a text message to The Sun on Wednesday morning, Marden wrote that he's thrilled with the results. "I am glad voters responded to my positive message focusing on Newberry values of community, family, and service to others," Marden said. Local news: FHP: Newberry man, 23, dies after being ejected in single-vehicle crash on State Road 26 Marden said he is happy to be putting the election in the "rearview mirror" and begin focusing on the city's future. The Sun reported last month that Marden, an employee of the John Birch Society, may be in violation of state law after he registered as a lobbyist, effective April 1, for the Wisconsin-based political advocacy group. Marden said Wednesday's he's still working with legal counsel to resolve the matter. "There's another aspect of the ethics statute which is language that says you can't be a registered lobbyist and be an elected official," Marden said. "However, there's other language that says you can't be working 20% or more of your job. I get that, because you don't want somebody that wears both hats and going to be a lobbyist and then moonlighting as a city commissioner." Glanzer, in a news release, said the city's election set a new record for voter turnout, which she attributed to residents paying more attention to city politics and wanting to have more say. "Newberry had over 1,673 people cast their vote on April 8, 2025, in the City of Newberry," Glanzer said in the release. "That was a 25.417% turnout. The last municipal election Newberry held was in 2022. Only 504people came out to vote." Glanzer added that she will work to rebuild the bridges in Newberry burned by isolationist policies. In the races for the two open Newberry commissioner seats, Donald Long defeated Steve Panaghi 1,018 to 610 for the Group 4 seat previously held by Marden. In Group 5, incumbent Tony Mazon defeated educator Rosa Marie Campbell 1,144 to 510. In the city Alachua, Walter Welch beat Gib Coerper by 21 votes to win the mayoral race. In addition, Jacob Fletcher beat incumbent Edward Potts 785 to 514 for the City Commission Group 2 seat.
