Augustana softball geared up Super Regionals run

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Augustana softball team reached the NCAA Regionals and found success winning all three games. Now, the Vikings are off to the Super Regionals.
The Vikings won the NSIC Tournament in early May, and that success continued into the NCAA Central Regional. The victories didn't come easy as the first two games saw a combined eight extra innings.
'Any sort of win that you can get down there is a huge win,' Augustana pitcher Grace Glanzer said. 'So we didn't care how it looked, what it looked like. I mean, it'd be great to have it a different way, a more quicker game than what we had. But, what matters is that we came out on top, and then we're here and we're moving on to the next part of our season.'
Augustana didn't get to host in the regionals, but pitcher Grace Glanzer says the travel helped build the teams togetherness.
'Honestly, there is some fun in traveling postseason,' Glanzer said. 'You eat as a team, you travel as a team, you do everything as a team. There's some fun in that. A lot of memories that are made. So, we took it as it is and we embraced it. And that's, I think why we came out on top this weekend.'
'Don't give in,' Augustana head coach Gretta Melsted said. 'Keep competing, keep pushing, keep throwing punches, keep going after it. Because eventually something is going to fall, or if it doesn't fall, at least you gave everything you had.'
The Vikings found unique ways to score runs in the regional, but as coach Melsted knows, any offense is key this time of the year.
'When you get to this time of year, you're going to face those pitchers that are going to shut down that offense or limit your opportunities. So you have to win in different ways, whether that is getting hit by a pitch, whether that is taking a walk, you have to be able to win in multiple different ways.'
Augustana will meet Central Oklahoma Thursday, May 15th. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. central time.

Justin Jefferson back at practice as Vikings WR depth takes a hit

Justin Jefferson back at practice as Vikings WR depth takes a hit originally appeared on The Sporting News The Minnesota Vikings finally saw Justin Jefferson back on the practice field after a 25-day absence. The star receiver has been sidelined since straining his left hamstring in late July, an injury that raised concern because of his history with similar issues. In 2023, Jefferson missed seven games with a hamstring strain in his other leg, prompting the team to move cautiously this summer. Justin Jefferson returns to the field On Monday in Eagan, Jefferson took part in warmups and individual drills but stayed out of team sessions. He will not suit up for the preseason finale against the Titans on Friday, yet he remains on schedule to play in the opener against the Chicago Bears on September 8. Vikings thin at receiver Jefferson's return is timely, but Minnesota's depth at wideout remains shaky. Jordan Addison will serve a three-game suspension to begin the year, and Jalen Nailor is sidelined after suffering a hand injury in joint practices with New England. Head coach Kevin O'Connell labeled Nailor's recovery 'week to week' and did not rule out surgery. MORE: NFL Fight: Tennessee Titans camp erupts as rookie QB Cam Ward clashes with Jeffrey Simmons With uncertainty around the position, the Vikings have leaned on a rotation of veterans Tim Jones, Lucky Jackson, and Thayer Thomas, along with rookie Tai Felton, to fill out practice reps. None bring Jefferson's production or presence, making his health critical as the season begins. Jefferson's take on his injuries The All-Pro wideout admitted his playing style might contribute to the recurring hamstring problems. 'The way I move, the way I cut, it's different than what most people do,' Jefferson explained. 'I probably put more stress on my body than a typical player would. So I'm working on strengthening myself in those positions.' Although he kept active during his time off, Jefferson admitted that watching practice from the sideline wasn't easy. 'I want to be out here with the guys. I want to play football and be in the mix,' he said. The Vikings will hope the careful approach pays off. With their receiving corps already depleted, Jefferson's availability could be the difference between a strong start or an early stumble. Justin Jefferson returns to practice with Minnesota Vikings following hamstring strain

Justin Jefferson rejoined the Minnesota Vikings for practice in Eagan on Monday after a mild strain of his left hamstring kept him sidelined for over three weeks. Jefferson was on the field for the light session on Monday, the latest ramp-up of his activity since he suffered the injury during the second practice of training camp on July 24. He took part in individual drills, but not full-team work. Because Jefferson missed seven games with a more severe strain of his right hamstring during the 2023 season and considering his importance to the team, the Vikings have been extra cautious with his recovery. Coach Kevin O'Connell said he didn't believe Jefferson would have to adjust his routine moving forward, however, as he takes part in "bits and pieces" of practices this week and next. "He's done such a good job with building his strength and doing the work with the medical team and the strength team that I think he feels like he's pretty darn close and ready to go," O'Connell said of the two-time All-Pro, who has the most receiving yards in NFL history through a player's first five seasons. The Vikings open the regular season on Sept. 8 at Chicago, and there's never been any concern about Jefferson being back to full strength on the field for the Monday night showcase against the NFC North rival Bears. But the waiting is sometimes the hardest part. "I want to be out here with the guys. I want to be playing football. I want to be in the mix," Jefferson said after practice. "It's definitely tough at times mentally, but every day you've just got to focus on the things that you focus on and think about getting to the next stage." Jefferson racked up 1,533 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns last season. The Vikings will be without Jefferson's primary sidekick, Jordan Addison, for their first three games while he serves a suspension for violating the league's substance abuse policy for a drunken driving case in 2024. Their third receiver, Jalen Nailor, recently jammed his hand and is on a week-to-week timetable to return, O'Connell said. He declined to address whether surgery was being considered for Nailor. "We're figuring out the best plan of action for return to play will be, but I do feel good about where we're at with that," O'Connell said. The upside to Jefferson's absence has been increased opportunities for the rest of the wide receivers vying for spots, with one more opened by the season-ending left knee injury that occurred for Rondale Moore in the team's first exhibition game. Rookie Tai Felton, the third-round draft pick out of Maryland who's also on track for a kickoff returner role, has a roster spot secured. Beyond him, the pool of competitors include fourth-year player Tim Jones, past practice squad members Lucky Jackson, Jeshaun Jones and Thayer Thomas, and undrafted rookies Myles Price and Silas Bolden. "There's obviously a lot of guys who wouldn't be here if we didn't see the talent, the skill sets, the ability," O'Connell said. "I do feel good about the depth."
