Augustana softball geared up Super Regionals run

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The Augustana softball team reached the NCAA Regionals and found success winning all three games. Now, the Vikings are off to the Super Regionals. The Vikings won the NSIC Tournament in early May, and that success continued into the NCAA Central Regional. The victories didn't come easy as the first two games saw a combined eight extra innings. 'Any sort of win that you can get down there is a huge win,' Augustana pitcher Grace Glanzer said. 'So we didn't care how it looked, what it looked like. I mean, it'd be great to have it a different way, a more quicker game than what we had. But, what matters is that we came out on top, and then we're here and we're moving on to the next part of our season.' Augustana didn't get to host in the regionals, but pitcher Grace Glanzer says the travel helped build the teams togetherness. 'Honestly, there is some fun in traveling postseason,' Glanzer said. 'You eat as a team, you travel as a team, you do everything as a team. There's some fun in that. A lot of memories that are made. So, we took it as it is and we embraced it. And that's, I think why we came out on top this weekend.' 'Don't give in,' Augustana head coach Gretta Melsted said. 'Keep competing, keep pushing, keep throwing punches, keep going after it. Because eventually something is going to fall, or if it doesn't fall, at least you gave everything you had.' The Vikings found unique ways to score runs in the regional, but as coach Melsted knows, any offense is key this time of the year. 'When you get to this time of year, you're going to face those pitchers that are going to shut down that offense or limit your opportunities. So you have to win in different ways, whether that is getting hit by a pitch, whether that is taking a walk, you have to be able to win in multiple different ways.' Augustana will meet Central Oklahoma Thursday, May 15th. First pitch is set for 7 p.m. central time. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Minnesota State knocks off USF in NSIC Tournament

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MINNESOTA STATE) — The Minnesota State Mavericks exploded offensively to secure a dominant 14-5 win over Sioux Falls on Thursday afternoon at Ronken Field, advancing to the third round of the NSIC Tournament. After a slow start, the Mavericks quickly turned the momentum in their favor. Sioux Falls struck first with a three-run home run off the bat in the top of the second inning. The Mavericks came back in the bottom half of the inning with four runs of their own. Nick Baker launched a three-run home run to left field to give MSU its first lead of the game, 4-3. The Cougars briefly regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Mavericks were far from finished. Minnesota State responded once again in the bottom of the fourth, tying the game at 5-5. From that point forward, it was all Mavericks. A two-RBI single by Jake Berkland in the fifth inning gave MSU the lead. The offense erupted for six more runs in the sixth, fueled by at-bats, aggressive baserunning, and timely hits, stretching the lead to 12-5. Berkland added a sacrifice fly RBI in the sixth to finish with four RBIs on the day, while Zach Stroh crushed a solo home run in the eighth to cap off the scoring. Stroh and Berkland each recorded multiple hits, leading an MSU lineup that tallied 13 total hits and drew eight walks. On the mound, the Mavericks' bullpen held strong, combining five shutout innings and allowing just four hits to close out the game. 'Mavericks win today! Guys picking each other up throughout the game. Withstood a rough start, Hunter Day and the bottom of our lineup stepped up in a big way.' Said head coach Matt Magers. With the win, Minnesota State improves to 46-5 overall and moves on to face Augustana in the third round of the NSIC Tournament at noon on Friday at the Birdcage in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Augustana wins NSIC, punches ticket to NCAA Tournament

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Augustana) – Augustana softball opened up the NSIC Tournament championship game in commanding and dominating fashion while turning up the defense to claim the 12-1 victory over Winona State in five innings. The hot performance punches the Vikings' ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the 30th time in program history and secures its fifth NSIC tournament title—its third in the last four seasons. AU collected 12 runs off 10 hits in the five-inning affair, led by Desi Cuevas and Ashton Dorman's two hits apiece. Andrea Cain, Stella Harber, Liz Dierks and Dorman each collected two RBI while the team combined for five walks drawn. Grace Glanzer took the win in the circle after five innings of work. She totaled six strikeouts alongside six fly outs and three groundouts against 22 batters faced, allowing just one unearned run. Competition flamed at the start as the first three Warriors were downed in order in the top of the inning and the Vikings exploded offensively. All nine batters in Augustana's lineup saw the plate in the first inning and it all started with Cain drawing a four-pitch walk. A base hit from Cuevas and a fielder's choice loaded up the bases and was followed by back-to-back-to-back singles from Dorman, Ella Cooper and Harber. Those three base hits brought in a combined five runners for Augustana, who took a commanding 5-0 lead with no outs yet in the inning and forced a Winona State pitching change. Norah Christiansen worked a walk off a 10-pitch at-bat and Sidney Smart drew a walk of her own to load the bases once again. Dierks singled to first base to score Harber and Christiansen would come in off a fielder's choice to firmly put the Vikings ahead 7-0 at the end of the inning. The Warriors put runners on first and second following a Viking error, soon scoring one run, but the effort would end there. AU struck again in the bottom of the third inning as Cuevas doubled to left center and came back around home off a base hit from Lexi Lander. Final nails in the coffin were placed in the bottom of the fourth by another hot inning from the Vikings. Cooper drew a walk and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt. A single down the left field line brought her home while a fielding error from WSU kept two runners on. Now ahead 9-0, a passed ball advanced those runners to second and third base, respectively. A fielder's choice scored another runner before Smart was caught stealing at home. Cain then stepped up to bat and continued her dominating weekend at the plate with a two-run homer over the left field fence. The rocket put the Vikings firmly ahead at 12-1 and the Warriors were quickly downed in the top half of the fifth inning to make it final and continue AU's postseason. After the tournament title was secured, Cain, Glanzer, Lander, Smart, Cooper and Cuevas were all honored on the 2025 NSIC All-Tournament Team. Denver hires MSU Moorhead's Tim Bergstraser as next men's basketball coach

Denver hired former MSU Moorhead men's basketball coach Tim Bergstraser as its next men's basketball coach, Denver athletic director Josh Berlo announced Monday. Bergstraser coached the Dragons for the past three seasons and went 75-22. The three straight 25-win seasons marked a first in MSU Moorhead program history. The Dragons won the NSIC Tournament in all of Bergstraser's three seasons with the team. MSU Moorhead made the NCAA Central Region Tournament in each of the past three seasons, and reached the tournament final this season for the first time since 2014-15. The Dragons fell to Washburn University 93-65 in the championships on March 19. Bergstraser will now make the leap from Division II to Division I to coach the Pioneers, who went just 11-21 last season and only 5-11 in the Summit League. Bergstraser will be tasked with turning around the program like he did in Moorhead the last few years. "At the onset of this search, we prioritized finding a proven high-character winner with head coaching experience that can be a leader for our student-athletes on and off the court with intimate knowledge of the Summit League," Berlo said. "We found exactly that in. He has succeeded at a very high level, competing for recruits and living in the Summit League's footprint."
