Hollywoodbets Durban July: 29 horses remain in the running

A total of 29 entries remain after the second declaration stage on Monday, 9 June for the R5 million Hollywoodbets Durban July after a game-changing three days of racing action countrywide. Final supplementary entries will close on Tuesday, 17 June at 11:00, on which date the weights will also be published. A number of entries put in impressive performances this past weekend. Defending champion Oriental Charm ran second behind Dave The King in the Hollywoodbets Grade 1 Gold Challenge on Saturday. This was his return from a four month break following a half length defeat by boom three-year-old Eight On Eighteen in the Cape Town Met. Just behind him was IOS Drill Hall Stakes winner Gladatorian who finished strongly for third, with Sean Veale suggesting he was a big runner come Hollywoodbets Durban July day. Michael Roberts' See It Again finished just outside of the quartet after having some bad luck in running. Other standout performances on Saturday were also delivered by Frank Robinson's Madison Valley, who dug deep to win the Hollywoodbets Dolphins Grade 3 Cup Trial in scintillating fashion under Muzi Yeni. An eyecatcher in the same race was Glen Kotzen's On My Honour, who was some way back off a moderate pace, but turned the jets on to run a close-up third. At Turffontein on Sunday, the Mike and Mat de Kock-trained Immediate Edge put daylight between himself and the opposition to win the 4Racing Grade 3 Jubilee Stakes, and he now looks a likely runner – the only representative of the top yard in the current 29. The Jubilee Stakes topweight Atticus Finch also demonstrated his well-being with a solid third-placed effort and Calvin Habib has already been engaged. The current big race entry list only includes one other jockey engagement at this stage – that being Muzi Yeni, who will partner Royal Victory. One disappointing display was that of Legend Of Arthur, who ran last in the Egoli Mile on Sunday. The vet reported him to be uncomfortable after the race. May 14 South Africa (Greyville) form analysis

Race 1 (1,200m) Race 1 (1,200m) (2) STAR IN MOTION raced green on debut and finished fifth. He should improve with the benefit of a race. (3) THAT'LL B THE DAY makes his debut. Judging on jockey bookings, he looks the pick of Glen Kotzen's trio. (6) GEORGE'S MAGIC can improve on his last effort, during which he took on some promising opposition. (9) QUINN'S TIME made a fair debut. He should improve but has drawn wide. Race 2 (1,400m) Race 2 (1,400m) (3) MALSHANA MOU has put in two smart showings over shorter. She has drawn well and can go one better. (2) KALI BWANA was a beaten favourite last time, although she has put in improved efforts in her last two starts. (1) SCANDALIZE has put in two modest efforts but she can improve over this trip. (8) ALANNAH has a tricky draw to contend with but she is tried over the trip. Race 3 (1,400m) Race 3 (1,400m) (1) NOODSBERG needed her last run after returning from a break. She meets some useful older runners but looks to have more in store. Gary Rich has two competitive runners in (3) ENGLISH PRIMROSE and (5) DAWN SURPRISE. Dawn Surprise could be the pick, but English Primrose is back on her favourite surface where she ran second in her last four outings on the Poly. (4) SKY VELOCITY has finished second in her last three starts. Race 4 (2,000m) Race 4 (2,000m) (4) SILKY JET will be taking on males but she has useful Highveld form over the trip. She should be competitive. (1) KING BAVARIAN has consistent form and a handy galloping weight. (5) STORM AHEAD has improved at his last two runs. He ran fourth two starts ago and finished second last time. (2) BASIE RAAKVAT has been knocking on the door and stays the trip well. Race 5 (1,600m) Race 5 (1,600m) (1) DANCING ON A CLOUD ran below expectations first-up after his maiden win. He can make amends. (2) UZWANO improved with blinkers last time. (9) LANDSEER showed up well first-up and can improve back on the Poly. (11) FAIRE ADVANTAGE returns from a lengthy break but won his last two over this course and distance. Race 6 (1,600m) Race 6 (1,600m) (3) FIREBURST finished well to get her head in front last time and could possibly follow up. (4) THE MIGHTIEST ran second behind Streisand last time, and got a three-point raise in the ratings. (1) GREENHOUSE was not far back in her first local outing and Kabelo Matsunyane will replace the inexperienced apprentice from a plum draw. (2) QHAWEKAZI had some fair Cape form. One to watch. Race 7 (1,200m) Race 7 (1,200m) (3) BLUE HOLLY is a smart filly. Although her best recent form has been over a furlong shorter, she has a light weight. (5) RICH FOLKS HOAX was narrowly beaten first-up and is now ½ kg better off with (6) QUANDARY. There should be very little between the two. (2) ICY BLAST is never far back and was a narrow winner last start. She boasts some fair form. Race 8 (1,200m) Race 8 (1,200m) (1) COTTON RON has been consistent. He has a plum draw and his apprentice rider has been replaced. (9) THERE SHE GOES does not have the best of draws but the Poly should suit and she rates a strong winning chance. (10) PURPLE POWAHOUSE is always game and has not been out of the money in his last five starts. He has the widest draw to contend with but expect another honest effort. (8) DARING ACT could get involved with the finish. Race 9 (1,000m) Race 9 (1,000m) (3) ICY ELEANOR was given a lengthy break after her debut win. She ran second after a break of nearly a year and can go one better. (8) DIYARANI returns from a break. She shed her maiden on the Poly and should feature. Tienie Prinsloo has two competitive runners in (5) HAPPY ANALIA, a narrow winner last start, and (9) RUGGER LOVER, who is now 1kg better off with Icy Eleanor.
