Students from Kochi's Global Public School scale Mount Everest
KOCHI: For the first time, a 14-member student team from Global Public School in Kochi completed a trek to the Everest base camp. The team comprising nine boys and five girls from classes 8 to 12 reached an altitude of 5,364 meters above sea level on May 13. 'In an era where teenage interests are often dominated by video games, fast food, and passive leisure, GPS chose to challenge the norm. With vision, planning and an unwavering belief in the potential of its students, the school curated this two-week Himalayan expedition in partnership with the Re-Live Adventure team, a pioneer in youth adventure experiences,' says Dilip George, dean and principal of the school Far from being a spontaneous endeavour, the trek was the culmination of two months of intense training designed and executed by Binoy Boban from Re-Live Adventure. 'This journey represents the essence of what we believe education should be - bold, transformative, and deeply human. Students underwent structured fitness training, nutrition awareness sessions, mental conditioning, and team-building exercises to promote resilience, self-discipline and leadership,' says Dilip. The intensive training sessions came in handy as they battled harsh terrains, high altitudes, and limited comforts. According to the school management, the experience has left the students not only with incredible memories but with a profound sense of accomplishment and personal growth. The group returned to Kochi on Sunday.

Lessons in altitude: Global Public School students make it to Everest Base Camp
Kochi : For the 14 students from Global Public School (GPS), Thiruvaniyoor, it wasn't just the cold that left them speechless — it was the overwhelming realization that they reached Mount Everest Base Camp , a dream that came true after two months of intense training. The students reached an altitude of 5,364m above sea level on Friday. The team, consisting of nine boys and five girls from Classes VIII to XII, is believed to be the first school contingent from Kerala to achieve this feat. School officials said the expedition was the culmination of over two months of rigorous training that included physical conditioning, nutrition sessions and mental preparedness under the guidance of professional trainers from Re-Live Adventure team, led by trek operator Binoy Boban. The trek was led by the school's Hindi teacher, Reena Krishnan. Speaking to TOI, Krishnan said students volunteered for the trek, and during the training, they were taught to face all adverse scenarios, which helped them complete the journey. "The students underwent rigorous training to climb steep regions and they were also on a strict diet. All the possible challenges when going into high altitudes were discussed with students, which gave them confidence," said Krishnan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like New Trend Lets Indians Access Benefits Up to ₹2,00,00,000 India News Learn More Undo Class XII student Advaith Joseph Vinu said, "A friend recommended the trek to me, saying it would be fun. Neha S, another Class XII student, said her love for trekking inspired her to join. "The only challenge was the weather. It kept changing — wind, rain, even hailstorms. But we pushed through and made it," she said. Neha's mother Seema Ravindra said, "Though I was anxious at first, the daily updates reassured us. Student's death: police find no evidence of ragging
A preliminary inquiry by the Ernakulam Rural police has failed to unearth any evidence suggesting that the 15-year-old student who allegedly died by suicide in January was subjected to ragging at his school. A report to that effect has been submitted to District Police Chief (Ernakulam Rural) Vaibhav Saxena by the Puthencruz police. The investigation was launched after the victim's mother petitioned the Chief Minister and the State Police Chief, alleging that ragging at the school had driven her son to take the extreme step. 'We are not categorically stating that no ragging took place, but rather that we could not find any evidence, if at all, that it happened. We learnt that the victim had shared information about alleged ragging with one of his cousins. We recorded the statements of the cousin, the deceased student's friends, classmates, school authorities, and the driver of the vehicle arranged for his transport. However, no evidence emerged,' said police sources. The inquiry was limited to the allegation of ragging, while the rest of the investigation is being carried out by the Hill Palace police under the Kochi City police. The deceased, a Class 9 student of Global Public School, allegedly jumped from the 26th floor of his apartment in Thripunithura on January 15 this year. The Puthencruz police conducted the preliminary inquiry, as the school falls within their jurisdiction. The school, in a communication, also ruled out being privy to any such incidents of ragging. According to the school authorities, following some Instagram posts, the boy's family approached them regarding alleged ragging, mentioning the names of other students after his death. The authorities claimed that they conducted inquiries with the students and parents reportedly involved in the alleged bullying incident, as well as with teachers and classmates, to determine the veracity of the claims. 'The children allegedly involved in the incident, along with their parents, were questioned again by the police team, and they vehemently denied any such incident or wrongdoing. We were also advised by the police team not to take any hasty decisions or actions against the children without the reports and findings from them, considering the age of those involved,' the school's statement said. Since then, a special investigation team has been probing the case.
