11,400 induction cooktops distributed to Anganwadi centres in AP
Vijayawada, June 5 (UNI) The Government of Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture under the Ministry of Power, on the special occasion of World Environment Day, initiated the distribution of 11,400 induction cooktops and stainless-steel utensil sets to Anganwadi centres across the state. The distribution of the cooktops was done under Phase-I of the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP). This effort is part of a larger rollout targeting all 55,607 operational Anganwadi Centres in the state. The distribution drive will be rolled out, covering all 26 districts of the state. The event was graced by Gummidi Sandhya Rani Minister of Women and Child Welfare, Kesineni Chinni, MP, Gadde Rama Mohan Rao, MLA. Launched nationally on November 2, 2023, under the Ministry of Power's 'Go Electric' campaign, the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP) aims to promote the widespread adoption of energy-efficient electric cooking appliances across India with the guidance from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). The Andhra Pradesh rollout was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal on December 7, 2024. Speaking on the occasion, Minister Gummidi Sandhya Rani said: "The distribution of induction cooktops is a commendable step forward in our collective commitment to cleaner energy and improved community health. Initiatives like the National Efficient Cooking Programme empower our Anganwadi workers, foster sustainable habits, and significantly reduce health risks associated with traditional cooking methods. Andhra Pradesh's partnership with EESL exemplifies our state's dedication to innovative, environmentally responsible practices.' MP Chinni, said: 'I am proud to witness this initiative begin in my constituency. Distributing induction cooktops under NECP is a vital step toward reducing health hazards and promoting energy efficiency. Andhra Pradesh's proactive partnership with EESL reflects our state's commitment to sustainable development.' A Surya Kumari, Secretary to Government, said: "We are proud to support this timely and much-needed initiative in partnership with EESL. Anganwadi workers form the backbone of our rural health and nutrition systems, and it is only fitting that they receive tools that enhance both their safety and efficiency. Induction cooktops are more than appliances—they are a symbol of progress. They save time, reduce exposure to harmful smoke, and ease the domestic load on women. VIJAYAWADA: Marking a significant step towards environmental sustainability and women's welfare, the State government has made all arrangements for distribution of energy-efficient induction cooktops and compatible utensils to 11,400 Anganwadi Centrrs (AWCs) across the State in the first phase. The programme is being conducted to mark the World Environment Day to be celebrated on Thursday. The initiative, led by the Department of Women and Child Welfare, aligns with the Union Government's Go Electric campaign and the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP), championed by the Ministry of Power, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). The State and Central governments are trying to transitioning from LPG to Induction Cooking in the Anganwadi Centres. Timed to coincide with the World Environment Day, the initiative reinforces the State's commitment to climate action and clean energy adoption. Implemented in collaboration with EESL - a joint venture of Central public sector undertakings under the Ministry of Power - the large scale distribution programme will be launched by Minister for Women, Child Welfare and Tribal Welfare G Sandhya Rani along with public representatives on June 5 in Vijayawada. They will oversee the distribution of the energy-efficient induction cooktops and compatible utensils to Anganwadi Centres. Plans are underway to extend this initiative to all 55,607 Anganwadi centres across the State. EESL CEO Vishal Kapoor along with top officers including CGM Animesh Mishra are currently overseeing implementation. Benefits of Transitioning from LPG to Induction Cooking: Energy Efficiency: Induction cooktops are 30 per cent more efficient than traditional LPG stoves. Cost Savings: Switching to 1200 W induction stoves is projected to reduce recurring LPG costs, with annual savings estimated at Rs 24 crore. Environmental Impact: Expected to avoid approximately 28,327 tons of CO₂ emissions per year. Safety and Health: Eliminates open flames, reducing fire hazards and improving kitchen safety. Better Working Conditions: Creates cooler, cleaner, and safer environments for Anganwadi workers, especially during hot summers. Minister Gummidi Sandhya Rani, Secretary Surya Kumari (Department of Women and Child Welfare), and Director M Venu Gopal Reddy expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister Khattar for their continued guidance. They also acknowledged the contributions of Chief Secretary K Vijayanand, BEE, EESL, and other State Designated Agencies for their collaborative efforts. In Vijayawada, the induction stoves distribution programme will be held at Funtimes Club, Teachers Colony from 11 am to 1 pm on June 5.

"Having studied best practices from 12 major states, the partnership between AP govt and EESL serves as a national role model for implementing the NECP on a saturation basis. The women and child welfare department of the AP govt has taken the lead in eliminating fossil fuels from cooking at AWCs. All other states will have to follow suit sooner or later," said Malik. EESL CEO Shri Vishal Kapoor, along with top officials including CGM Shri Animesh Mishra, is currently monitoring and overseeing implementation. Meanwhile, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency has assured full support for scaling and replicating Andhra Pradesh's clean cooking model across the country and encourages other states to adopt similar sustainable initiatives for long-term impact.

B.C. to end zero-emission vehicle rebate program
Social Sharing B.C. is halting its zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) rebate program this month, citing a government-wide spending review and economic instability for the decision. The fate of the program had been uncertain, after a similar federal program was abruptly paused in January, with officials saying funds had run out early due to a "surge of interest." The province said it was reviewing the program in early April, after removing the consumer carbon tax created a $1.8-billion fiscal hole in its budget. The program, Go Electric, provides income-based rebates. It offers between $500 and $2,000 for plug-in hybrids with a range of less than 85 kilometres, and between $1,000 and $4,000 for battery electric and long-range plug-in hybrids. In a statement this week, the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions said people could still receive the rebate through May 15, "following which the Province will be pausing the program to consider next steps in view of progress to date." The ministry says since 2011, the province has put more than $650 million toward programs to help people switch to cleaner transportation, resulting in an increase from 5,000 ZEVs on the roads in 2016 to nearly 195,000 today. Stalled progress on targets Despite the increase, the new 2024 Zero-Emission Vehicle Update shows ZEV progress has stalled in the province. While sales continue to increase, the percentage of light-duty sales that are ZEVs has remained below 23 percent the last two years. The province has legislation in place, the Zero-Emission Vehicles Act, which establishes targets for the percentage of light-duty vehicle sales that must by ZEVs, with manufacturers facing penalties if they aren't met. In 2026, 26 per cent of sales in B.C. must be ZEVs, with that increasing to 90 per cent in 2030 and 100 per cent in 2035. 'Very optimistic' Bob Porter, president of the Vancouver Electric Vehicle Association, says it's unfortunate the province is ending the rebates, particularly since the federal rebates have also stopped, and the targets may need to be reassessed. "I think it was very optimistic," he said. "They're going to have to re-calculate where they want to be with electric vehicles." Porter says, with the current economic situation, he understands why the government would end its rebate program, but he says it's played a major role in encouraging people to make the switch from internal combustion vehicles. "I'm hoping that rebates will come back both federally and provincially.... I mean, it's one way to clean up the air in the province. I mean, transportation adds a lot of pollution to the air," he said. Porter adds that removing the consumer carbon tax at the beginning of April — which lowered the cost of fuel for drivers — further removed an incentive for people to make the decision to buy electric vehicles instead of those requiring fossil fuels.
