11,400 induction cooktops distributed to Anganwadi centres in AP
Vijayawada, June 5 (UNI) The Government of Andhra Pradesh, in partnership with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), a joint venture under the Ministry of Power, on the special occasion of World Environment Day, initiated the distribution of 11,400 induction cooktops and stainless-steel utensil sets to Anganwadi centres across the state.
The distribution of the cooktops was done under Phase-I of the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP).
This effort is part of a larger rollout targeting all 55,607 operational Anganwadi Centres in the state.
The distribution drive will be rolled out, covering all 26 districts of the state. The event was graced by Gummidi Sandhya Rani Minister of Women and Child Welfare, Kesineni Chinni, MP, Gadde Rama Mohan Rao, MLA.
Launched nationally on November 2, 2023, under the Ministry of Power's 'Go Electric' campaign, the National Efficient Cooking Programme (NECP) aims to promote the widespread adoption of energy-efficient electric cooking appliances across India with the guidance from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). The Andhra Pradesh rollout was formally inaugurated by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Minister of Power Manohar Lal on December 7, 2024.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Gummidi Sandhya Rani said: "The distribution of induction cooktops is a commendable step forward in our collective commitment to cleaner energy and improved community health. Initiatives like the National Efficient Cooking Programme empower our Anganwadi workers, foster sustainable habits, and significantly reduce health risks associated with traditional cooking methods. Andhra Pradesh's partnership with EESL exemplifies our state's dedication to innovative, environmentally responsible practices.'
MP Chinni, said: 'I am proud to witness this initiative begin in my constituency. Distributing induction cooktops under NECP is a vital step toward reducing health hazards and promoting energy efficiency. Andhra Pradesh's proactive partnership with EESL reflects our state's commitment to sustainable development.'
A Surya Kumari, Secretary to Government, said: "We are proud to support this timely and much-needed initiative in partnership with EESL. Anganwadi workers form the backbone of our rural health and nutrition systems, and it is only fitting that they receive tools that enhance both their safety and efficiency. Induction cooktops are more than appliances—they are a symbol of progress. They save time, reduce exposure to harmful smoke, and ease the domestic load on women. This programme truly embodies our vision of women's empowerment, environmental responsibility, and improved quality of life for the most underserved communities."

'On June 4, the minister's office received a 'revised' schedule of programme in which 'prayer' was replaced with 'lighting of the lamp' and paying 'floral tributes to Bharatamba' (image of Bharat Mata allegedly used by the RSS at its functions),' he said. Binoy said Prasad called the official in charge at Raj Bhavan and enquired about the changes. 'He was told floral offerings would be made to a portrait of Bharatamba. The minister said details of the portrait should be shared as it is a government event and unprecedented changes, for both the government and Raj Bhavan, are now being incorporated,' he said.

‘Will launch pilot project to install solar houses in Haryana soon': Khattar on Vij's proposal
The Ministry of Power 'will soon launch a pilot project to install solar houses across Haryana', Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said on Friday, adding that if successful, it will eventually be expanded to other states. A solar house, also known as a solar home system (SHS), utilises solar panels to generate electricity from sunlight, which can then be used to power a home's electrical needs. The system can either be on-grid (connect to power grid) or off-grid (operate independently of grid). The announcement came after Haryana Energy Minister Anil Vij — during the Regional Power Conference with northern states and union territories, in Chandigarh on Friday — suggested the construction of solar houses in Haryana villages, to 'meet farmers' rising power needs'. Currently, many in Haryana villages have 10-kilowatt (kW) solar panels, Vij said. 'For higher capacity needs, dedicated solar houses will be more feasible. They require reliable electricity supply for agricultural activities, regardless of the source — solar, Bhakra or power central pool. Thus, a comprehensive solar project should be implemented to benefit all the stakeholders.' 'The state government has been working on promoting the use of solar energy across Haryana, so that it becomes self-reliant in the power sector. The Energy Department should run a pilot project to install solar houses across Haryana, and if successful, it could be expanded to other regions of the state,' Vij added. Khattar said India's renewable energy share in the total installed power capacity has increased to 49 per cent in April 2025 from 32 per cent in 2014. The minister said states should also work on having an adequate power generation mix, including the addition of nuclear generation capacity while meeting their resource adequacy plan. He also pointed out that states should complete the installation of prepaid smart metres in government establishments and colonies by August 2025 and for all commercial, industrial and high-load consumers by November 2025. States should work towards listing power sector utilities to generate additional resources and improve transparency and governance, the minister noted. 'We successfully met a peak demand of 250 GW in May 2024 and India has transformed from power-deficit to a power-sufficient nation and as of today, peak demand shortage is zero,' he said. He outlined the importance of continuous cooperation and coordination between central and state governments in achieving the goal of Viksit Bharat by 2047. India's peak electricity demand is projected to reach 446 GW by 2034-35 and meeting this sustainably requires proactive planning and continued coordination between the centre, states, and stakeholders, the minister said. He also advised states to implement Renewable Purchase Obligation (RPO) Guidelines and urged them to form dedicated teams for this critical planning. The minister highlighted the importance of cyber-security measures and islanding schemes as effective measures to prevent power outages due to cyber concerns and enable the resilience of the grid. Earlier, Vij urged Khattar to approve the 'viability gap funding for a 600 megawatt-hour (MWh) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Haryana', while requesting 'early approval' for Rs 3,179.47-crore proposals under the Revised Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) to strengthen supply systems in Sonepat and Jhajjar, and Rs 142 crore for the pending proposal of a 33 kV substation augmentation under the LRP plan. The Haryana Energy Minister also proposed a policy to 'regulate the installation of poles, substations and transmission lines' on agricultural fields and residential areas, in a bid to prevent inconvenience to stakeholders, while suggesting 'underground cabling' in densely populated or sensitive areas. A day after green event, LMC red-faced
Half a dozen of the saplings planted by urban development minister AK Sharma and other officials at Laxman Mela Ground disappeared on Friday, just a day after the plantation drive, raising serious questions over the Lucknow Municipal Corporation's (LMC) planning and execution. The plantation was part of a major event on World Environment Day, Ganga Dussehra, and the birthday of chief minister Yogi Adityanath, on Thursday. Officials had planted over 30 saplings at the site. Of the 10 saplings planted in a row -- each protected by tree guards -- by minister Sharma, mayor Sushma Kharakwal and municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar, only four remained by Friday morning. A ground report by HT on Friday morning revealed six empty pits, while the saplings were missing. However, LMC claimed that the plants were 'shifted' to another location as a large number of people visit Laxman Mela Ground during festivals. Despite the presence of top officials and the appointment of additional municipal commissioner Arun Kumar Gupta as nodal officer, LMC failed to identify a suitable location for the plantation drive. Officials acknowledged that the site is actually used for idol immersion during major festivals, and the area turned into a dumping ground just hours after the Thursday event. However, soon after the issue came to light, the LMC staff started planting the saplings again in what appeared to be a damage control effort. Criticising LMC's 'casual approach', environmentalists said inability to safeguard saplings planted in the presence of a minister would dent the credibility of regular plantation drives. Prabhunath Rai, president of Bhojpuri Samaj, claimed the saplings were removed by LMC officials themselves after realising that the site was wrongly selected. 'This is pure negligence,' Rai said. Mayor Sushma Kharakwal directed additional municipal corporation Arun Kumar Gupta to prepare and submit a detailed report. Meanwhile, LMC claimed to have planted over 1,000 saplings across the city as part of the same initiative, including those of rudraksha, banyan, amla, and kaner. The campaign also featured activities under 'Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam' and 'Plogging for Plastic' campaigns. A human chain was also formed for environment conservation at the Gomti riverfront.
