Five held at Mopa Airport for harassing tourists
Panaji: Five men were apprehended at Manohar International Airport on Thursday by the tourism department in coordination with the tourist police for harassing tourists and violating the Goa Registration of Tourist Trade Act. Tourism director Kedar Naik said action was taken against the five men under Sections 2(g) and 26 of the Goa Registration of Tourist Trade Act. 'Accused persons have been fined and necessary action has been initiated,' said Naik. 'The incident occurred in the vicinity of Manohar International Airport, Mopa, where these individuals were found carrying out illegal activities, causing inconvenience to visitors and obstructing the smooth movement of tourists in the area.' The five men have been identified as Muddasa Bepari, Ummeasma Jahagirdar, Siraj Shadguppi, Rohan Korgaonkar, and Badshah Khan. The men were fined as part of a crackdown on unauthorised service providers. The department said that they will continue to take action to protect tourists and uphold Goa's tourism integrity.

‘Registration of hotel booking portals must'
Panaji: The tourism department has issued a fresh directive urging all online travel platforms to register with the department within 15 days. Tourism director Kedar Naik said that the department found several online travel aggregators accepting online bookings without obtaining the required no objection certificate (NOC), licence, or permissions from the department. Naik said that under the Goa Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1982 and Rules of 1985, all online travel portals must complete their registration within 15 working days from the date of issue of the official circular. This is not the first time the department issued such a directive. In 2023, the tourism department directed hotels, guesthouses, homestays, and online travel agencies to register with the department before conducting any tourism-related transactions or activities in Goa. Then director of tourism Suneel Anchipaka threatened to impose hefty fines since offering services to tourists without registration was deemed illegal. A few weeks earlier, the department asked eco-tourism farms, watersports operators, and all other stakeholders to also register with the department.

Tourism dept approval now mandatory for agri farms and spice plantations
Panaji: Citing the need for 'upholding standards' and transparency, the tourism department issued a terse order to all agri farms and spice plantations to register under the within 15 days. 'Many persons operating an agri farm or spice plantation with or without accommodation facilities, are doing so without permission or licence from this department,' said tourism director Kedar Naik. Goa's spice plantations and agri farms offer a unique blend of agriculture and tourism, giving visitors a glimpse of nature, culture, and culinary experiences. These plantations, which are predominantly in the hinterlands, also offer guided tours and a rustic homestay experience. Govt's official website shows seven major spice plantations, but there are many more registered with the agriculture department. When asked what action would be taken if agro farms continue to operate without licences from the tourism department, Naik said the department will initiate action as per the Goa Registration of Tourist Trade Act.

Tourism dept directs yachting operators to obtain necessary nods
Panaji: With the number of yachts operating in Goa increasing, the tourism department has directed all watersports operators conducting yachting excursions to ensure strict compliance with provisions of the Goa Registration of Tourist Trade Act, 1982 and Rules, 1985. Tourism director Kedar Naik said a growing number of operators are operating yachts without obtaining the necessary permissions from the department. According to the official circular issued by the tourism department, all such operators must register their activity within 15 working days from the date of issuance of the notice. This move aims to regulate yachting services, enhance tourist safety, and ensure adherence to legal protocols. 'The department is committed to streamlining watersports activities in the state to ensure safety, transparency, and accountability. Unregulated operations pose a risk not only to tourists but also to the environment,' said Naik. He said that the directive is part of a broader effort to strengthen compliance among tourism stakeholders and promote responsible tourism through a well-regulated and sustainable tourism ecosystem.
