Man arrested for raping teen in Sundargarh

Rourkela: A 24-year-old man was arrested in Sundargarh district on Wednesday for allegedly raping a minor girl by promising marriage and making her pregnant. The 16-year-old survivor gave birth to a girl last month, but the newborn died a day later. The case came to light when the police outpost in the hospital concerned reported the baby's death on Aug 2, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the mother's situation. Authorities found that she was residing in a childcare facility. Upon questioning, the girl revealed that she had met the accused through social media in Oct 2024. The man allegedly lured her to a relative's house in early Nov, where he raped her twice, promising marriage. The sexual assaults are said to have continued later that month. In Dec 2024, the girl travelled to Assam to work for relatives, where she began experiencing abdominal pain. Medical examination at a hospital there revealed she was four months' pregnant. Despite informing the accused of her condition, he allegedly ignored her. Navi Mumbai collegian thrashed by classmates with hockey stick over Marathi wedding invitation on WhatsApp group; FIR filed against 4

Navi Mumbai: The ongoing language row in the state triggered tension in Vashi on Tuesday, when four students allegedly assaulted their 20-year-old classmate with a hockey stick outside ICLES' Motilal Jhunjhunwala College for sending a Marathi wedding invite on their WhatsApp group and insisting that they reply in the same language. Vashi police registered an FIR based on a complaint filed by the injured student, Suraj Pawar, against Faizan Naik and 3 others. Pawar, a BSc IT student, said as there was a wedding in the family, he sent an invitation on the WhatsApp group. When Naik replied in Hindi, Pawar asked him why he had not replied in Marathi. The jibes and digs on the chat group over using Marathi and Hindi soon escalated into an argument. On Tuesday morning, Naik and others allegedly thrashed Pawar and hit him with a hockey stick on the head outside the college building. The incident spiraled into a political controversy with MNS leader Gajanan Kale arriving at Vashi police station after the FIR was lodged. Kale told TOI: "A minor issue of a wedding invite written in Marathi has caused a serious fight among the college students. This should not have happened. I feel that politicians like BJP MP Nishikant Dubey and Samajwadi Party's Abu Azmi are influencing youngsters, leading to such fights. "Politics over the use of any regional language must never stoop so low that the people indulge in violence. All languages in India are equally important," said an activist.

Fake union official arrested in Thane; demanding Rs 5 lakh extortion from businessman

THANE: A 52-year-old man posing as a Mathadi workers' union functionary was arrested by the Anti-Extortion Cell of Thane Crime Branch for allegedly demanding Rs 5 lakh in extortion from a businessman under the pretext of 'protection money'. The accused, Ghanshyam Sitaram Naik, a resident of Roadpali, Kalamboli in Panvel, allegedly threatened the businessman that unless Rs 3,000 was paid for each vehicle bringing material to company sites in Thane and Mumbai, operations would be halted. He eventually demanded a lump sum of Rs 5 lakh, said Shailesh Salvi, the Senior Inspector of the Anti-Extortion Cell. Following the complaint, the Anti-Extortion Cell laid a trap at a city-based hotel near a private hospital and arrested Naik red-handed while accepting Rs 5 lakh on July 22, Salvi added. A case was subsequently registered at Vartaknagar Police Station under various sections of the BNS. The court remanded the accused to police custody until July 25. Salvi said that they are investigating whether Naik extorted money from others using similar tactics. 'Further questioning is underway, and things will be clearer after that,' the official said. Officials have urged anyone with similar complaints to contact the Anti-Extortion Cell, Thane Crime Branch.
