Gogo Maweni pleads not guilty to assault charges
Controversial Sangoma Makgotso 'Gogo Maweni' Mofokeng has pleaded not guilty to all charges tabled against her regarding an assault case dating back to 2019. She faces a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm for an incident reported by Celiwe Khulu, the sister of her ex-lover who was a soccer player, on December 17. Gogo Maweni appeared for trial at the Protea Glen Magistrates Court where the complainant in the matter, Celiwe Khulu, took the stand and gave her testimony about what transpired the night she was allegedly assaulted. Khulu told the court that she had just come from the corner store with her boyfriend when the accused approached her from behind as she arrived at home. She said she was standing beside her home gate when Gogo Maweni started hurling insults at her while holding a beer bottle in her hand, which she used to strike Khulu on the face and head. 'She first hit me from behind in my head and when I turned around, she hit me on my mouth and then my tooth broke. I then covered my mouth, and thereafter my sister, who witnessed the incident, came and took me to the house,' Khulu testified. She continued: 'From there I had a cut at the back of my head, a split lip, and a broken tooth. Shortly after the incident, my sister dragged me to the house to assess the extent of my injuries and then ordered me to change my clothes, and then we rushed to the police station to open a case.' Khulu said upon arrival at the police station, she was told to seek medical attention first before opening a case. 'They told me to go to the nearest clinic, which was in Chiawelo, and to my surprise, when I got there, I found the accused waiting for me, continuing with her insults until security guards escorted me inside.' 'She repeatedly called me a bi***h and said no matter what I do, I will not succeed in causing a breakup between her and my brother. Yet they were already separated at the time. She also said even if I can open a case, it won't go anywhere because she will bribe the police,' she said. While Khulu was continuing with her testimony, Gogo Maweni's defense Attorney Oosthuizen asked for a short adjournment to consult with his client. Returning from the adjournment, Oosthuizen applied for the case to be postponed, reminding the court that Gogo Maweni is six months pregnant with twins. He told Magistrate Genevieve Tyrell that she is suffering from a headache. 'Your worship, as you know, my client is in the late stages of her pregnancy and is currently suffering from cramps and a migraine. I request that you grant us a postponement to the 12th of June,' he said. Magistrate Tyrell, as well as the state, had no objection to this and granted that the matter be postponed to the 12th of June for further investigation.

'God wouldn't put me in a situation that I can't handle' - Gogo Maweni opens up about her trial, pregnancy and reality show
Despite facing a trial for alleged assault, traditional healer and reality TV star Gogo Maweni is refusing to let her challenges define her. Instead, she's focusing on her pregnancy, marriage and giving back to the community. In a candid interview with TshisaLIVE, Gogo Maweni spoke about her challenges and endeavours. In January, Gogo Maweni, real name Lee-Anne Makgotso Mofokeng, spent some time in Sun City prison before being granted bail. The charges were related to a 2019 assault case, where she allegedly attacked someone with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Her time behind bars opened her eyes to the challenges that women face in prison which has led to her starting an initiative to support incarcerated mothers. The popular sangoma is hosting a unique competition where 10 winners will enjoy a luxurious five-star lunch date with her, complete with a herbal goody bag from her store. To enter, they have to purchase a R100 raffle ticket and all proceeds will go towards supporting pregnant women and new mothers in need by providing essential hampers and baby clothes. 'I've been doing things since I got out of prison because I felt like the women in prison needed help. There are a lot of foreigners as well that are arrested for things like [not having] passports and don't have people who visit them or assist them with food. These women are pregnant and depend on the government for pampers and baby clothes, so I felt the need to assist,' she said. 'For me, it's not about benefiting from my supporters, it's about giving a helping hand. I've always been someone that gives back. From buying school shoes to assisting where I can. So I just felt the need to help. Not a lot of people see what's happening in prisons but there is a cry for help and there is a need to help people if you can.'
