Gogo Maweni pleads not guilty to assault charges

News2409-05-2025

Controversial Sangoma Makgotso 'Gogo Maweni' Mofokeng has pleaded not guilty to all charges tabled against her regarding an assault case dating back to 2019.
She faces a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm for an incident reported by Celiwe Khulu, the sister of her ex-lover who was a soccer player, on December 17.
Gogo Maweni appeared for trial at the Protea Glen Magistrates Court where the complainant in the matter, Celiwe Khulu, took the stand and gave her testimony about what transpired the night she was allegedly assaulted. Khulu told the court that she had just come from the corner store with her boyfriend when the accused approached her from behind as she arrived at home.
She said she was standing beside her home gate when Gogo Maweni started hurling insults at her while holding a beer bottle in her hand, which she used to strike Khulu on the face and head.
'She first hit me from behind in my head and when I turned around, she hit me on my mouth and then my tooth broke. I then covered my mouth, and thereafter my sister, who witnessed the incident, came and took me to the house,' Khulu testified.
She continued: 'From there I had a cut at the back of my head, a split lip, and a broken tooth. Shortly after the incident, my sister dragged me to the house to assess the extent of my injuries and then ordered me to change my clothes, and then we rushed to the police station to open a case.'
Khulu said upon arrival at the police station, she was told to seek medical attention first before opening a case.
'They told me to go to the nearest clinic, which was in Chiawelo, and to my surprise, when I got there, I found the accused waiting for me, continuing with her insults until security guards escorted me inside.'
'She repeatedly called me a bi***h and said no matter what I do, I will not succeed in causing a breakup between her and my brother. Yet they were already separated at the time. She also said even if I can open a case, it won't go anywhere because she will bribe the police,' she said.
While Khulu was continuing with her testimony, Gogo Maweni's defense Attorney Oosthuizen asked for a short adjournment to consult with his client.
Returning from the adjournment, Oosthuizen applied for the case to be postponed, reminding the court that Gogo Maweni is six months pregnant with twins. He told Magistrate Genevieve Tyrell that she is suffering from a headache.
'Your worship, as you know, my client is in the late stages of her pregnancy and is currently suffering from cramps and a migraine. I request that you grant us a postponement to the 12th of June,' he said.
Magistrate Tyrell, as well as the state, had no objection to this and granted that the matter be postponed to the 12th of June for further investigation.

Texas Republican to reintroduce legislation to increase penalties for assaulting police amid LA protests

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) is set to reintroduce legislation to increase penalties for assaulting police amid recent protests in Los Angeles. The legislation, which Gonzales previously introduced in 2023, aims to 'increase jail time and civil fines for assaulting a law enforcement officer or interfering with the performance of their official duties' and is named the Curbing Offenses on Policing Services Act (COPS Act) according to a Monday press release from Gonzales. 'The chaos unleashed by rioters in Los Angeles this weekend is anything but a peaceful protest—it's anarchy,' Gonzales said in the release. 'Radical activists damaged Border Patrol and ICE vehicles while these agents were on duty, and as a result, injuries were reported. It's time to highlight a very clear message: if you harm a law enforcement officer, you're going to face severe consequences,' he added. 'This week, I will introduce the COPS Act in Congress to increase charges for anyone who assaults our law enforcement personnel or keeps them from performing their official duties.' According to Gonzales's release, the COPS Act looks to take actions that include increasing the amount of time spent in prison by an extra year 'for anyone who forcibly assaults, resists, opposes, impedes, intimidates, or interferes with federal officers in performing their duties or as a result of their duties.' Trump deployed 2,000 National Guard members to the Los Angeles area on Saturday amid protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said previously the action was due to 'violent mobs' recently attacking 'Federal Law Enforcement Agents carrying out basic deportation operations.' Zondo defends call for criminal investigation as Mantashe disputes state capture report

Zondo defends the commission's recommendations for criminal investigation against Mantashe. Mantashe challenged the findings regarding the Bosasa security installations. Zondo cites that the commission recommended an investigation and did not conclude that Mantashe was guilty. Former Chief Justice Raymond Zondo has backed a call for a criminal investigation into Mineral Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe, based on the state capture commission's findings. Zondo, whose tenure at the Constitutional Court ended last year, deposed an affidavit at the Johannesburg High Court on 16 May, responding to claims made by Mantashe in his review application, citing that the commission acted beyond its mandate by suggesting that he should be subject to a criminal investigation. In the affidavit, Zondo is adamant that there was nothing untoward in the findings against Mantashe, citing that the commission merely made a recommendation to law enforcement authorities. 'The commission did not find that the applicant (Gwede Mantashe) was guilty of corruption or even that there was a prima facie case of corruption against him. It found merely that there is a reasonable prospect that a further investigation will uncover a prima facie case against Mr Mantashe,' read the papers. Zondo further argues that it is surprising that Mantashe does not express the notion that the findings subject him to harm. Mantashe does not contend that the finding has done him any harm. Any reasonable reader will understand that in the impugned part of the report, the commission only went as far as to raise a question for further investigation. His response to the commission's finding and recommendation should have been that he would await the outcome of such further investigation as may be undertaken by the law enforcement agencies.' Raymond Zondo In July 2022, City Press reported that Mantashe embarked on a legal bid to set aside damning corruption allegations contained in the state capture report. The commission extensively recommended that he be criminally investigated by police for accepting Bosasa's installation of security systems. Mantashe argues that this was beyond the scope of the commission, as it was acting outside its terms of reference in probing corruption which took place in public office. In his affidavit, Mantashe disputes the evidence given to the commission by former Bosasa chief operations officer Angelo Agrizzi, citing that he had never met him in his life and that his evidence to the commission was 'completely untrue.' Agrizzi had told the commission that Bosasa had sponsored security upgrades at Mantashe's home in the Eastern Cape. However, Zondo said in court papers that the commission properly dealt with evidence given by Bosasa. 'The commission concluded that the evidence overwhelmingly established that Bosasa, its leadership, employees, and associates were able to again illicit control over the procurement process of departments and organs of the state through systematic and aggressive targeting of public officials with offers of gratification in the form of bribes and a range of other material benefits,' read the papers. He also said that Bosasa's evidence implicated former president Jacob Zuma in alleged wrongdoing. 'Bosasa sought out officials across different levels of seniority within the state, ranging from former president Zuma at one end of the spectrum to municipal officials and employees of state-owned entities at the other end,' read the papers.
