Gogo Maweni pleads not guilty to assault charges
Controversial Sangoma Makgotso 'Gogo Maweni' Mofokeng has pleaded not guilty to all charges tabled against her regarding an assault case dating back to 2019.
She faces a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm for an incident reported by Celiwe Khulu, the sister of her ex-lover who was a soccer player, on December 17.
Gogo Maweni appeared for trial at the Protea Glen Magistrates Court where the complainant in the matter, Celiwe Khulu, took the stand and gave her testimony about what transpired the night she was allegedly assaulted. Khulu told the court that she had just come from the corner store with her boyfriend when the accused approached her from behind as she arrived at home.
She said she was standing beside her home gate when Gogo Maweni started hurling insults at her while holding a beer bottle in her hand, which she used to strike Khulu on the face and head.
'She first hit me from behind in my head and when I turned around, she hit me on my mouth and then my tooth broke. I then covered my mouth, and thereafter my sister, who witnessed the incident, came and took me to the house,' Khulu testified.
She continued: 'From there I had a cut at the back of my head, a split lip, and a broken tooth. Shortly after the incident, my sister dragged me to the house to assess the extent of my injuries and then ordered me to change my clothes, and then we rushed to the police station to open a case.'
Khulu said upon arrival at the police station, she was told to seek medical attention first before opening a case.
'They told me to go to the nearest clinic, which was in Chiawelo, and to my surprise, when I got there, I found the accused waiting for me, continuing with her insults until security guards escorted me inside.'
'She repeatedly called me a bi***h and said no matter what I do, I will not succeed in causing a breakup between her and my brother. Yet they were already separated at the time. She also said even if I can open a case, it won't go anywhere because she will bribe the police,' she said.
While Khulu was continuing with her testimony, Gogo Maweni's defense Attorney Oosthuizen asked for a short adjournment to consult with his client.
Returning from the adjournment, Oosthuizen applied for the case to be postponed, reminding the court that Gogo Maweni is six months pregnant with twins. He told Magistrate Genevieve Tyrell that she is suffering from a headache.
'Your worship, as you know, my client is in the late stages of her pregnancy and is currently suffering from cramps and a migraine. I request that you grant us a postponement to the 12th of June,' he said.
Magistrate Tyrell, as well as the state, had no objection to this and granted that the matter be postponed to the 12th of June for further investigation.

Cape Town couple arrested on child porn charges allegedly abused their own children
A Bloubergstrand couple has been arrested for the alleged sexual abuse of their two daughters, aged 3 and 8. They have been accused of producing child pornography and other sexual offences. According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk, a multidisciplinary team comprising members of the national and Western Cape Serial and Electronic Crime Investigations (SECI) Units, and officials from the Department of Social Development (DSD), supported by the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), arrested the 47-year-old woman and 48-year-old man in Bloubergstrand on Tuesday. They were found at a house identified through joint investigative efforts. They face multiple charges, including the production of CSAM (commonly referred to as child pornography), rape, sexual assault, and sexual grooming. The two children were rescued during the operation and have since been put in a place of safety. Several electronic devices were seized. Last month, the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) seized assets, including a luxury vehicle and R647 300 in cash belonging to Darryn Wilken and his girlfriend, Tiona Megan Moodley. Investigations by various law enforcement agencies, including the US Secret Service and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), led to their arrests. The couple faces charges for allegedly running a child pornography website, offering material for sale internationally. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said along with the cash and vehicle, the unit also seized high-end electronic equipment. 'It (Wilken's luxury vehicle) brazenly reflected a registration number 'KIDZ NA GP'. The luxury vehicle, high-end electronic equipment and R647 300 in cash were the subjects of the search and seizure warrant,' she said.

Rep. LaMonica McIver indicted on federal charges after scuffle at ICE facility
The Brief U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver has been indicted on federal charges alleging she assaulted and interfered with ICE officers outside a New Jersey Detention center. McIver was indicted on three counts of assaulting, resisting, impeding and interfering with federal officials. McIver claimed no wrongdoing. U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver was indicted Tuesday on federal charges alleging she assaulted and interfered with immigration officers outside a New Jersey detention center while Newark's mayor was being arrested after he tried to join a congressional oversight visit at the facility. Acting U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba announced the grand jury indictment in a post on X. "While people are free to express their views for or against particular policies, they must not do so in a manner that endangers law enforcement and the communities those officers serve," Habba said. McIver was charged in a complaint by Habba last month with two assault charges stemming from the May 9 visit to Newark's Delaney Hall — a 1,000-bed, privately owned facility that Immigration and Customs Enforcement uses as a detention center. The indictment includes three counts of assaulting, resisting, impeding and interfering with federal officials. Habba said two of the counts carry a maximum sentence of up to eight years in prison. A third has a maximum sentence of one year. What they're saying In a statement, McIver said the charges amounted to the Trump administration trying to scare her. "The facts of this case will prove I was simply doing my job and will expose these proceedings for what they are: a brazen attempt at political intimidation," she said. McIver's lawyer, former U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Paul Fishman, said in a statement that they would challenge the allegations "head-on" in court. The backstory A nearly two-minute clip released by the Homeland Security Department shows McIver on the facility side of a chain-link fence just before the arrest of the mayor on the street side of the fence, where other people had been protesting. She and uniformed officials go through the gate, and she joins others shouting that they should circle the mayor. The video shows McIver in a tightly packed group of people and officers. At one point, her left elbow and then her right elbow push into an officer wearing a dark face covering and an olive green uniform emblazoned with the word "Police" on it. It isn't clear from police bodycam video whether that contact was intentional, incidental or a result of jostling in the chaotic scene. The complaint says she "slammed" her forearm into an agent then tried to restrain the agent by grabbing him. Local perspective McIver, 38, is a Newark native who joined Congress after winning a special election in September 2024 to fill the seat of the late Rep. Donald Payne Jr. She was elected to a full term in November 2024. Before coming to Washington, McIver served as president of the Newark City Council and previously worked in Newark's public school system. She has deep local ties and is viewed as a rising figure in the city's political landscape.
