LGL: Union City School District Foundation
Not every school district has one, but Union City does. The Union City School District Foundation is the recipient of this week's JET 24/FOX 66 Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express. Helping students grow. That's the mission of the foundation. Donations to the organization help with a variety of initiatives, according to foundation board member Steve Jones. 'Most specifically, it's for the scholarships that we provide and also mini teacher grants,' Jones said. So teachers can come up with special ideas that otherwise that would not have been able to do. These teacher grants give them those opportunities to help enrich the lives of the students they have.' One of the most noticeable projects funded in part by the foundation is recent upgrades to the district's sports complex. Jones said, 'We put in all new dugouts, fields, fencing, concession stands, and most importantly, the press box. When you come into this community now, you can see the difference.' The foundation received a $250 Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express and immediately assigned it to students for something special. 'We're going to put it towards International Day, which is a day we get to celebrate a bunch of different countries all over the world. And we get to try different foods from some of those countries. and play games and socialize,' said student Ava Greer. The work of the Union City School District Foundation can be supported by you on ERIE GIVES day, coming up August 12. Every week, JET 24/FOX66 and the Auto Express team up to honor a local non-profit. Find out who it is next, on Good Morning Erie on JET 24 or Good Day Erie on FOX 66, Wednesday mornings. Loving Giving Local: Belle Valley Fire Department
For more than 85 years, the Belle Valley Volunteer Fire Department has been serving part of Millcreek Township. It is this week's recipient of $250 from JET24/FOX66 Loving Giving Local and Auto Express. Fire Chief Jeremy Moreland said the department will use the funding for the daily bills. 'Gas, electric, all that good stuff. Any rig maintenance it could be used for,' he said. Orange fire trucks are a signature of the Belle Valley Fire Department. The volunteers and equipment of Belle Valley supplement the newly created paid Millcreek fire department. Belle Valley covers a diverse region of Erie County that includes everything from residential and industrial buildings to high rises and farms. Chief Moreland is a homeowner and a parent and has been a volunteer for 16 years. Here's why. 'When the calls come out and nobody shows up what are you going to do? So, I always wanted to help any way I can. This was the best thing I could do, and I love doing it,' he said. Some Belle Valley equipment is brand new. Some of it is aging, just like some of the volunteers, the chief said. 'I have two volunteers here that have been volunteering for 50 plus years. So, the number of volunteers are age age-oriented, where they're older than younger, so we need more younger volunteers. It's a very good thing for the community to do,' he explained. Like so many other volunteer fire departments, Belle Valley can use more volunteers. If that's something that interests you, here's what you need to know. 'Go to any of the volunteer fire departments and put in an application. They'll send you for a physical and background check. And once you pass all that, you'll start taking classes. Nothing comes out of your pocket other than your time. It's a lot of time invested in this, but it's an awesome thing to be a part of,' Chief Moreland suggested. Following his donation, Joe Askins of Auto Express said, 'Volunteer fire departments are needed in our community and for us to be able to deliver Loving Giving Local to Belle Valley who has been in our community for over 85 years, we know there's a big expense to run fire department and we know any donation we bring to a local volunteer fire department always stays in the community and come to great use.' Every week, JET 24/FOX66 and Auto Express present $250 to a local non-profit organization, selected at random. Loving Giving Local: Gaudenzia
Helping people overcome addictions — That's the mission of an organization that got a visit from Loving Giving Local. In more than 56 years of service in Pennsylvania, Gaudenzia has helped more than 350,000 people recover their lives. 'Gaudenzia is a treatment provider in Erie for substance abuse disorders and mental health conditions. And wherever you are in your recovery journey, we have a program for you,' said Lisa Hermann-Bradley, program director. Gaudenzia offers withdrawal management and residential treatment services, and both traditional and intensive outpatient services. Hermann-Bradley said, 'All our treatment services are individualized, with group and individual services. We even have a couple residential programs that are specifically for women and women with children. where their children can be with them in treatment if that would be a barrier to getting help. Whatever we need, we can provide.' Hermann-Bradley said it's a lifelong journey of wellness and recovery just like any other illness. 'The best thing we can do is instill hope in others and let them know there is another way to live,' said Hermann-Bradley. Gaudenzia was this week's recipient of $250 from Auto Express. In presenting the check, Joe Askins of Auto Express said, 'Guadenzia provides programs that are necessary to our community so for us to be able to deliver Loving Giving Local here today and to learn the donation we bring is going to go toward something fun for their clients. That's what loving giving local is all about.'. Gaudenzia this week, who will it be next week? LGL: Millcreek Education Foundation
Students in the Millcreek School District will benefit from this week's JET24/FOX 66 Loving Giving Local donation from Auto Express Resale Center. Owner Joe Askins presented the Millcreek Education Foundation with a check for $250. The Millcreek Education Foundation is one of the oldest in the country having started in 1982. 'We're here for Millcreek school district students to provide essential student needs. And that can include personal items as well as items they need to just to be a student,' Executive Director Kristina Huber MA, CFRE, said. Huber said the foundation is likely best known for the scholarships that it awards students every year. 'Last year we gave almost $70,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors. Not only for college, but for trade schools,' she said. 'We also have scholarships for items you may need when going into a career or technical. We have an architect scholarship, and we also have art scholarships for art supplies that can be very costly.' To support the work of the foundation, they hold events, like the MEF craft show each year, a golf tournament, and a pop luck fundraiser. Partners in the community, corporations, education tax credits, and random donations like this week's Loving Giving Local check from Auto Express help support the work of the foundation. 'For us to be able to deliver Loving Giving Local to the Millcreek Education Foundation and to learn today that the donation we bring is going to go towards their Student-in-Need program, that's what Loving Giving Local is all about. And this foundation has been doing it since 1983,' Askins said.
