Police invoke PD Act on notorious criminal in Satya Sai district
Tirupati: The Satya Sai district police invoked the Preventive Detention (PD) Act on notorious criminal Dal mill Suri following the orders of the district collector and magistrate on Friday. District SP V Rathna told reporters that Dal mill Suri alias Moramsetty Suresh (46), a resident of Kothacheruvu mandal, was accused in 36 odd criminal and other cases and had defrauded people to the tune of 9 cr. "He was involved in criminal and white collar offences in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Chattisgarh. He procured farm produce from the local ryots and duped them. The accused and his associates were found to be indulging in criminal offences including trespassing, extortion, bodily offences, white collar offences and embezzlement of funds", the SP added. TN BSP leader K Armstrong murder case: Madras HC quashes detention of 17 accused under Goondas Act
CHENNAI: Madras high court on Wednesday quashed the detention of 17 accused arrested in connection with the murder of Tamil Nadu BSP leader K Armstrong under the Goondas Act. A division bench of Justice M S Ramesh and Justice V Lakshminarayanan, however, observed that the quashing of the detention under Goondas should not influence the grant of bail to the accused. The court passed the order on a batch of pleas moved by the kin of the accused persons arrested in the case, challenging the detention under Goondas. On July 5, 2024, the Tamil Nadu state unit president of the Bahujan Samaj Party ( BSP ), K Armstrong, 47, was hacked to death by a six-member gang while he was chatting with his friends and supporters near his house in a crowded locality at Sembiam near Perambur. According to the prosecution, at around 7 pm, the gang came on three bikes and pounced on Armstrong, wielding deadly weapons. Before his men could respond and come to his rescue, the gang hacked him brutally and escaped, leaving him in a pool of blood.

Political leaders visit caste killing victim Kavin Selvaganesh's family
Several political leaders, including Thoothukudi MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, Tamil Nadu BJP President Nainar Nagenthran, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) President Thol. Thirumavalavan, Ministers K.N. Nehru and Anitha Radhakrishnan visited the family of honour killing victim Kavin Selvaganesh family on Thursday. They visited his house in Arumugamanagalam in Thoothukudi district and paid condolences. Kavin Selvaganesh, 27 from Arumugamangalam was murdered on June 27 at KTC Nagar area of Tirunelveli. The brother of the woman, he was in liaison with, S. Surjith has been arrested for murder and detained under Goondas act. The brutal killing over an inter caste relationship has triggered widespread outrage across Tamil Nadu. Lok Sabha Member Kanimozhi Karunandihi visited his house and offered condolences to the family and assured that Chief Minister M.K. Stalin is determined to take strict action against those involved in the crime. Kavin's parents reiterated their demand that Surjith's mother also be arrested. Minister K.N. Nehru, Anitha Radhakrishnan, Thoothukudi Mayor Jegan periyasamy and officials were present during the visit. BJP State president Nainar Nagenthran also visited his house and met his grieving parents and family to offer condolences. Speaking to the media, Mr. Nagenthran urged the Tamil Nadu government to enact a special law to prevent honour killings in the state. In the afternoon, VCK President visited Kavin's house to offer condolences. He spent more than an hour with the grieving family, listening in detail to the events leading to murder. Mr. Thirumavalavan assured them that his party would provide full support and assistance to the family.

TN ‘Honour killing': Father held, case transferred to CB-CID
TIRUNELVELI: The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday transferred the probe into the 'honour killing' of an SC youth, Kavin Selvaganesh, by the son of a police sub-inspector couple to the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) and invoked Goondas Act against the suspect, S Surjith. According to the statement issued by DGP Shankar Jiwal's office, the case was transferred to ensure a free, fair and unbiased investigation, considering the nature and significance of the crime. Meanwhile, police on Wednesday night arrested Saravanan, father of Surjith who had allegedly hacked Kavin on Sunday. This comes after several hours of inquiry with Saravanan at the Palayamkottai police station. Nellai police commissioner orders Surjith's detention under Goondas After the arrest, the SI was brought to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital for a check-up. 'Kavin was murdered on Sunday in Tirunelveli. Based on a complaint from the victim's mother, Palayamkottai police registered a case against Surjith, his father Saravanan, and mother Krishnakumari. Surjith was arrested the same day and remanded in judicial custody,' police said. Surjith's family belongs to MBC community. Both parents of the accused are serving as sub-inspectors in the TN Special Police unit. To uphold transparency and impartiality in the inquiry, the police department has suspended the couple, police said. On Wednesday, Tirunelveli city police commissioner Santosh Hadimani ordered Surjith's detention under the Goondas Act. A police official said investigators have not yet got full access to Kavin's photos of Surjith with sickle and machete, suspected to have been posted by him on his Instagram page, went viral.

Four arrested under Goonda Act, 31 externed from Dharwad district
The Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissionerate has arrested four history sheeters under the provisions of the Goonda Act and externed 31 history sheeters to various districts for a period of six months. Addressing a press conference in Hubballi on Wednesday, Police Commissioner N. Shashikumar said that four history sheeters have been arrested under the provisions of Goonda Act (The Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug-Offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum-Grabbers Act, 1985) and sent to prisons in Dharwad, Kalaburagi and Mysuru. He said that the arrested history sheeters are involved in various crimes and facing the charge of murder, assault and others. 'Accused Sagar Lakkundi has 13 cases against him, Manjunath alias Scientist Manjay has 41 cases, Dawood Nadaf has 20 cases and Laxman alias Laxman Gabya has 13 cases against him. After following due procedure and verification, they have been booked under the Goonda Act,' he said. The Police Commissioner said that earlier in the year, they externed 52 history sheeters to different districts and now they have externed 31 history sheeters who are facing the charge of murder, rioting and violation of Arms Act. These externed history sheeters will have to report to specific police stations in the districts of Bidar, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Chamarajnagar and Dakshina Kannada. To a query, Mr. Shashikumar clarified that as the order on externment can be subjected to judicial review, it was passed after due diligence. To another query, he clarified that it is a continuous process and now, they are reviewing the activities of those involved in organised crimes in the last couple of months. They will take appropriate action after thorough verification.
