Shivamogga SP holds meeting on preparations ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi
Shivamogga Superintendent of Police G.K. Mithun Kumar has said that the district police will take all steps to ensure peaceful Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in the district, and it has already taken disciplinary action against miscreants who attempted to disturb the celebrations in past years. The Superintendent of Police held a meeting with office-bearers of the committee that installs the Ganesh idol at Kote Anjaneya Temple at the temple premises on Monday. He explained the preparations made by the district police for the smooth conduct of the festival. 'Last year, nearly 3,500 idols were installed across the district. This time, the number of idols could be around 3,600. The celebrations and processions to mark the day of immersion of the idol would go on for one and a half months. Over 2,500 policemen had been working for the safety of the public in the district. Additionally, 2,500 to 3,000 policemen would be deployed from neighbouring districts,' he said. 'The objective of any festival is to ensure peace and well-being of all the public. However, the police would act tough if anybody tries to disturb the peace. The police identified 80 miscreants who could cause unrest during the celebrations and has taken action against them. Some of them had been sent out of the district under the Goonda Act. After watching video clips of last years' celebrations, the police identified many people who raised objectionable slogans and exhibited unruly behaviour during the procession. The parents of such people were contacted and had been warned of strict action,' Mr. Kumar said. Besides that, the police would install more than 1,000 CCTV cameras at different locations, he said. The committees that organise the events, too, should install cameras at places where large gatherings are expected, the Deputy Commissioner suggested. Additional Superintendents of Police A.G. Cariappa, S. Ramesh Kumar, Deputy Superintendent of Police Babu Anjanappa, Police Inspector Harish Patil, and others were present at the meeting.

Damaged CC road poses danger to public; HDMC urged to act
Pic: The cement concrete road from Hubballi-Karwar Road to Indira Gandhi Glass House at MG Park has deteriorated, endangering motorists and pedestrians Hubballi: The cement concrete (CC) road connecting Hubballi-Karwar Road to Indira Gandhi Glass House and MG Park has fallen into disrepair, posing serious risks to both motorists and pedestrians. With pavers washed away and many manholes left open, residents and commuters demand immediate action by the authorities. Located under ward No. 50 of the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC), the road passes MG Park, RN Shetty Kalyan Mantapa, and Girani Chal, an area home to around 200 families. Due to ongoing flyover work, the vehicles heading to Hosur, Unkal, and Navanagar have been rerouted through this stretch, significantly increasing the flow of vehicles, including BRTS Chigari buses, NWKRTC buses and private vehicles. The visitors to MG Park are finding it increasingly difficult to navigate the area. With 3-4 open manholes and a large portion of paver blocks either damaged or missing, pedestrians, especially senior citizens and children, are at risk. Suresh Koti, a resident of Girani Chal, urged the authorities to reinstall the pavers soon to ensure the safety of all. "During rainfall, the situation becomes worse due to waterlogging," he said. Another commuter, Rakesh Kumar, also urged the authorities to repair the road soon. "Half the road is in poor condition. Driving here is risky," he said. Mangalamma Hiremani, corporator from ward No. 50, said the CC road was constructed in 2020 under the Smart City project. "Due to a lack of coordination between HDMC and Smart City, the repair work has not been carried out. Due to this, both motorists and pedestrians are suffering. I had raised the issue with HDMC multiple times, but in vain," she said. Basavaraj Jiddi, HDMC (Zonal-9) assistant commissioner, said the project's maintenance period by the Smart City has ended. "Therefore, the maintenance of the road now lies with HDMC. Repair works will be taken up soon," he said. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Third VB train for NK welcomed in Hubballi
Hubballi: The third Vande Bharat Express train was welcomed with much fanfare at Hubballi station on Sunday evening. Many schoolchildren, train enthusiasts, and BJP workers, led by Union minister Pralhad Joshi, offered a grand welcome to the train. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Currently, the Dharwad-Bengaluru-Dharwad and Hubballi-Pune-Hubballi Vande Bharat trains are running through Hubballi station. For the section of Hubballi-Bengaluru, this is the second Vande Bharat train, and will go through districts like Haveri, Davanagere, Tumakuru. Addressing the occasion, Joshi said that Vande Bharat trains are a symbol of the country's development and these trains offer long journeys in the shortest time. "The Vande Bharat train, including its coaches and engine, is domestically manufactured. The production of these trains began in 2018, and their number has now surpassed 150, with 11 trains operating in Karnataka. Previously, train coaches and engines were imported from abroad," he noted. "Over the past 11 years, there have been revolutionary changes in the railway sector, with significant expansion of infrastructure. Currently, 30km of tracks are being laid daily. Until 2014, only about 45% of railway routes were electrified, but in the last 11 years, an additional 55% has been completed. In the state, 99% of routes have been electrified. There have been significant changes in the speed of goods train operations. Presently, the cost of freight transport in the country is around 12%, and by enhancing infrastructure such as loading, unloading, and building goods corridors, the cost is being reduced to 8%," he asserted. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now If the wildlife division grants permission for the Hubballi-Ankola railway project, it will open a gateway for development in the region. Approval has already been received for the detailed plan. Private entities have come forward to develop two ports along the coast as part of this project. Significant efforts are ongoing to initiate this project. "Land acquisition processes are hindering railway infrastructure and route planning. If these processes are expedited, significant changes can occur in the railway sector. Resolving land acquisition between Davanagere and Chitradurga and constructing the route would allow travel between Hubballi and Bengaluru in four-and-a-half hours," he mentioned. Sources in SWR said that the train inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bengaluru was given a grand welcome at many stations. "Responding to requests by the public at large, we stopped it at even halt stations like Heggere Halt near Tumakuru. Though it was not scheduled, it was stopped in Arsikere too. People offered puja and raised slogans in favour of the Railways and the PM," they added.
