David E. Kelley to receive Visionary Tribute from Gotham TV Awards

File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo May 22 (UPI) -- The Gotham Television Awards announced Thursday that it will honor David E. Kelley with the Visionary Tribute Award. The Gotham Television Awards take place June 2 in New York City. The Visionary Tribute Award is for Kelley's television career and his latest series, the Apple TV+ adaptation of Presumed Innocent. Kelley, a practicing attorney before writing for television's L.A. Law, created legal dramas The Practice, its spinoff Boston Legal, and Ally McBeal. He adapted Scott Turow's 1987 novel Presumed Innocent, which was previously a movie in 1990. The show starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Ruth Negga, Peter Sarsgaard, Renata Reinsve, Bill Camp and O-T Fagbenle. In addition to legal dramas, Kelley created Picket Fences, Doogie Howser, M.D., Chicago Hope and adapted Big Little Lies, The Lincoln Lawyer, Nine Perfect Strangers and Big Sky. Nominees in the 12 categories were announced April 29. Nominees include Adolescence, Dying for Sex, The Pitt, Matlock, Man on the Inside, Forever, Paradise and more. The ceremony takes place live at Cipriani Wall Street. Variety will stream the ceremony on its YouTube Channel.

Sheryl Lee Ralph is set to receive the Sidney Poitier Icon Tribute at the second annual Gotham Television Awards. The Sidney Poitier Initiative's mission is to honor the groundbreaking actor, director, and activist by supporting inclusive programs that further the film and media careers of students, professionals, and organizations from underrepresented backgrounds. 'Over the course of her distinguished career across film, television, and stage, including her recent, widely celebrated performance as Barbara Howard in 'Abbott Elementary,' Sheryl Lee Ralph has carved out a singular place in entertainment history,' said Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute. 'After making her feature debut in Sidney Poitier's 'A Piece in Action,' she has continued to embody his spirit of purpose, dignity, and excellence. Honoring her with the Sidney Poitier Icon Tribute at the Gotham Television Awards will be a powerful, full-circle moment.' Ralph won the 2022 Emmy Award for outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series and the Critics' Choice Award for best supporting actress in a Comedy Series. In 2023 and 2024, she received her second and third Emmy nominations for this role. Ralph first made a name for herself on television starring alongside Grammy Award winner Brandy in over 100 episodes of UPN's 'Moesha.' At 20 years old, Ralph made her feature film debut opposite Academy Award winner Sidney Poitier in Warner Bros.' 'A Piece of the Action,' which Poitier also directed. She went on to work on films including 'The Mighty Quinn' starring opposite Denzel Washington, 'Mistress' with Robert De Niro, 'To Sleep with Anger' with Danny Glover, and 'The Distinguished Gentleman' with Eddie Murphy. Ralph has also appeared on Broadway starring in 'Dreamgirls' where she landed best actress noms at both the Tony and Drama Desk awards. She recently appeared as Madame Morrible in 'Wicked,' becoming the first African American actress to play that role on stage. As previously announced, Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, as well as Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, will receive Creator Tributes and that Elisabeth Moss and the cast of 'The Handmaid's Tale' will receive the inaugural Ensemble Tribute at the second annual Gotham Television Awards. The nominations in the 12 competitive award categories at the second annual Gotham Television Awards were previously announced. Winners of the Second Annual Gotham Television Awards will be honored at the awards ceremony at Cipriani Wall Street on Monday, June 2, which will be livestreamed on Variety's YouTube channel. ‘The Pitt,' ‘Adolescence,' ‘The Studio' Lead 2025 Gotham Television Award Nominees
Emmy season is upon us, and while we won't see those nominations until July 15, the second annual Gotham Television Awards could give us a taste of what to expect from TV's biggest night. In the mix are critically-acclaimed series such as Netflix's 'Adolescence,' Max's 'The Pitt,' AppleTV+'s 'The Studio' and FX/Hulu's 'Dying for Sex,' 'Say Nothing' and 'English Teacher,' among several newcomers. 'Building on the success of last year's inaugural ceremony, the Gotham Television Awards returns with new categories, expanded tributes and a larger stage to celebrate the creators and artists making their mark on today's television landscape,' Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of the Gotham's, said. 'As the first awards show of the new television season, we are proud to bring together the industry's most exciting new voices, celebrate breakthrough achievements and deepen our commitment to supporting the creative community.' Hwang Dong-hyuk of 'Squid Game' clinches Creator Tribute Award at Gotham Television Awards
Creative mastermind behind 'Squid Game' earns Creator Tribute four years after series' win Director Hwang Dong-hyuk, the mastermind behind the global phenomenon 'Squid Game,' will receive the Creator Tribute at the 2025 Gotham Television Awards. The Gotham Television Awards, held annually in New York City, is an American film ceremony that honors outstanding achievements in television. The Creator Tribute category celebrates visionary artists and creators who have significantly shaped and expanded the boundaries of television. 'Since 'Squid Game''s breakout win at The Gotham Awards four years ago, its ascent has been nothing short of extraordinary — earning global acclaim, sweeping honors, and cementing its place as a landmark in modern television,' said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham Film & Media Institute via a press release on Thursday. In 2021, the Gothams honored 'Squid Game' with the award for Best Long Form Breakthrough Series.
