Why 'Squid Game' Season 3 Might Not Be Its Last After All
It might have been billed as its third and final outing, but it looks as though hopes of future Squid Game spin-offs are high after the season three finale appeared to leave room for future series. Squid Game's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, seemed to leave room in an interview, per the Korean Times, for future series. 'I have considered the idea of a spin-off. There were moments during production when I grew curious myself,' he said, adding, 'After watching season three, some may think there's room for a season four, while others may feel there's no need for one.' In an earlier interview, Dong-hyuk also suggested that, if a Squid Game spin-off does get greenlit, he has some ideas in mind. Speaking to reporters at the 2025 Gotham Television Awards, Dong-hyuk noted, 'If I make [a] spin-off, it will be a story happening between season one and two. There [was] a three-year gap between season one and two. So, I want to show what they did for those times.' Speaking at a press conference in London, Dong-hyuk shared his reservations about the ending he'd concocted for the Squid Game universe in its third outing, but those doubts were superseded by the praise steeped on the writer/director by the show's cast. 'I thought that director Huang's decision that he had made... he was very determined,' Lee Jung-jae said. 'I'm sure that he went through a lot of internal debate and struggles because, as we all know, this series has been just hugely successful. So when it's a story that big, how do you bring that to a close as director, writer and creator? And especially for a character like Gi-hun, where do you take him? 'And so I know that he listened to a lot of other people's ideas as well, we would have discussions among ourselves, among the cast. He would also discuss it with me and the crew as well, but I believe that director Hwang came up with the most adequate, the most unpredictable, the most meaningful and the most intriguing and entertaining ending possible. 'So personally, I am very happy with the finale and you all are going to be able to see where it all ends soon. But I can guarantee you it's not going to be what you think.' Squid Game could have easily ended after one season. In fact, that's what the show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, wanted. 'I had no intention of doing a second season, because the overall process of writing, producing and directing the series was so challenging. I didn't think to do another one,' he told Variety. (He even reportedly lost several teeth from stress.) And yet, because the Hollywood IP machine never rests, Netflix squeezed not only one but two more seasons out of him. He first had the idea for Squid Game 15 years ago, for a two-hour film that never saw the light of day, according to the Associated Press. He later brought the idea for a series to Netflix, where it really took off. After all this time, it must be satisfying to bring the story to a proper close. 'I learned that I shouldn't give up. If you love something and if you want to create something, it might not work now, but the time might come later. Or that idea could be the source of inspiration for something else,' Hwang told AP. In accepting the Visionary Tribute at the 2025 Gotham TV Awards, acclaimed and prolific TV series writer-producer David E. Kelley rallied his fellow creators, urging them to stay true to who they are even if that goes against corporate mandates. 'Every day when I wake up and get to do this job, I know how lucky I am, and all of us are lucky to do what we do,' he said, noting how it feels to be part of the creative community at gatherings like The Gothams. 'We all set out to become who we are, it was Albert Schweitzer who first said that. But as you go along, perhaps the bigger challenge is to not become who you know you're not,' Kelley said. 'We're in the arts. We have a unique ability to move people, to offer hope in darker times of moral wobble. We can be leaders. Not everybody gets that chance, and fewer people take it.' Kelley closed his speech with, 'Tonight, we're here all celebrating together, and I would encourage you as we go forward, as we sing our songs and make our television shows and movies and do our dances, have a grand time but hold on to who and what you are as you go about it.' In the video, the director introduced what he calls 'the most dramatic and impactful game across all the seasons'—a high-stakes version of hide-and-seek. In this chilling new challenge, players are divided into two teams: blue and red. One group plays the role of attackers, while the other becomes defenders. Set inside a confined space with a ceiling painted like a starry sky, the setting's serene beauty stands in stark contrast to the brutal game that is about to unfold. The stakes appear to be higher than ever. Fan theories have already dubbed the game 'worse than marbles'—a reference to the emotionally devastating game in season one, where players were forced to compete in pairs, often leading to betrayal and loss. The Squid Game page even responded to one such fan post with a cryptic eye emoji, further fueling speculation that this hide-and-seek variant will be soul-crushing in its intensity. While no spin-off has been officially confirmed, Hwang Dong Hyuk hasn't ruled out the possibility. Speaking at the 2025 Gotham Television Awards, he teased his concept for a side story. Stephen Graham reveals the 'ultimate' goal of 'Adolescence'
Stephen Graham, who co-created, co-wrote and stars in the critically acclaimed Netflix series 'Adolescence,' hopes that the show sparks conversations at home. 'When me and Jack (co-creator, Jack Thorne) started talking about this and writing and creating it, we wanted there to be conversations between parents and children,' he told The Post exclusively at the Gotham Television Awards on Monday, June 2. It centers around a 13-year-old boy named Jamie Miller (played by Owen Cooper) who is arrested after the murder of a girl in his school. The series takes a pointed look at the role social media has in shaping young male teens and their views of women. London's Lord Mayor, Sadiq Khan, recently praised the show for highlighting the 'epidemic of violence against women and girls' in the United Kingdom. Courtesy of Netflix Graham recently opened up that while 'Adolescents' is fictional, he used real-life crimes in Great Britain over the recent years as the inspiration behind the show. 'I read an article in the newspaper, which was about a young boy who had stabbed a young girl to death. And … I was stunned by what I was reading,' he said in March, per NPR. 'And then, about three or four months later, there was a story on the news … about a young boy who had stabbed a young girl to death, and this incident was the opposite end to the country to the first incident that I'd read about,' Graham continued. 8 'Adolescence' is available to stream on Netflix. You go through a lot of different things, physically, mentally, and even spiritually in the greater scheme of things,' the actor shared. 'My main question was why: Why is this happening?' Graham continued, 'There's a wonderful saying, which is, it takes a village to raise a child. And within that kind of complexity … it's kind of like, maybe we're all accountable. 'When a child closed the door back in the day when it was me and you, we didn't have access to the rest of the world [via the internet], and we couldn't be influenced dramatically by other people and their theories and their thought processes.
