GEC alumni team counters ‘misleading reports' on collapsed building

Against the backdrop of the recent collapse of a commercial building in the city, a group of alumni from the Government Engineering College (GEC), Thrissur, has come forward with a fact-finding report to counter what it termed as 'misleading and damaging' information that wrongly implicated the college's structural engineering experts. Several reports had suggested that the collapsed building had received a structural safety certificate from the GEC's Civil Engineering department, but documents and inspection records reviewed by the alumni reveal this claim as incorrect. According to the team, the building had in fact been declared unsafe by a faculty member from the GEC on August 17, 2024 following a site inspection conducted in response to a request from the Thrissur Corporation. The inspection was triggered by an incident the previous day, when glass panels from the first floor of the building shattered and fell, prompting the corporation to issue a formal letter requesting an urgent assessment. The inspection report clearly stated that the building was not structurally sound, with supporting technical reasoning. Furthermore, on September 28, during a visit by a court-appointed advocate commission— based on a Kerala High Court order dated September 12 —the same GEC faculty member reiterated in person that the building was unsafe. The team said the reports mistakenly referred to a safety certificate issued for the adjacent building that had been certified as safe on November 11. It was this certificate that had been misrepresented in public discourse. The Government Engineering College, Thrissur, has long been authorised under the Kerala Building Rules to carry out structural assessments. Faculty members from the Civil Engineering department, especially those with postgraduate specialisation in structural engineering, have regularly served on expert panels formed by municipal bodies and even the Kerala High Court, the report says.

Thousands participated in mega job fair in Thrissur

Thousands of job seekers thronged the job fair conducted under the Vijnana Keralam people's campaign in Thrissur on Saturday. Interviews were conducted for around 35,000 job opportunities across 577 different sectors, offered by 151 employers. These interviews were held in 140 classrooms at both the Government Engineering College and Vimala College. Out of respect for the passing of Pope Francis, all inaugural ceremonies were completely avoided. Even before the registration started at 8:30 a.m. at the Government Engineering College, the venue was filled with job seekers. In addition to on-site hiring, the event also featured a Virtual Job Fair, Apprenticeship Drive, and an Influencers' Meet. The State is ushering in a new chapter in developmental journey through Vijnana Keralam, a government initiative that seeks out job seekers instead of waiting for them to come forward, said Revenue Minister K. Rajan. He was speaking after visiting the mega job fair. 'Vijnan Thrissur (part of Vijnana Keralam) aims to provide employment opportunities aligned with the educational qualifications and interests of job aspirants. Various government agencies were brought together to provide technical assistance and skill training to prepare candidates for employment. The success of this mega job fair is a testament to the collective efforts of the government, employers, volunteers, and the public, modelled on People's participatory planning,' the Minister added. Minister K. Rajan interacted with candidates at the registration counters and interview centres, encouraging them with confidence. He also held discussions with various employers. In collaboration with NoRKA, overseas job opportunities will also be included in the Vijnan Thrissur job fairs. The goal is to ensure that all registered candidates receive job placements by the end of May, the Minister said. Vijnana Keralam aims to strengthen Kerala's knowledge economy through a people-centric planning model, said T.M. Thomas Isaac, advisor to the project. Speaking while coordinating the activities of the Mega Job Fair, he stressed the importance of public participation in this ambitious campaign. Mr. Isaac highlighted that the campaign seeks to unify all volunteers under the Vijnana Keralam umbrella to leverage government-supported infrastructure and skill development initiatives. It's a collaborative effort that integrates education, employment, and skill-building to empower the State's workforce and drive sustainable progress.

Thrissur's mega job fest kicks off today, thousands of jobseekers expected to attend

Thrissur is hosting one of the State's largest ever job fairs under the Vijnana Keralam people's campaign on Saturday at two key venues, Government Engineering College and Vimala College. With more than 25,000 candidates having already registered through the Digital Workforce Management System, the event aims to connect talent with opportunities from 151 employers across 577 sectors, offering a staggering 35,000 job openings. Registrations will begin at 8.30 a.m. at the Government Engineering College grounds. In addition to on-site hiring, the event will also feature a Virtual Job Fair, Apprenticeship Drive, and an Influencers' Meet — making it a hybrid employment carnival. Following the passing of Pope Francis, all inaugural ceremonies have been cancelled, but the job fair will proceed in full swing. Key dignitaries including Revenue Minister K. Rajan, Higher Education Minister R. Bindu, and District Collector Arjun Pandyan will be present. In a prelude, 617 candidates received job offers during virtual pre-events, and 512 shortlisted individuals will receive official certificates and offer letters at job stations during the event. Special arrangements have been made for the candidates. The KSRTC is deploying extra buses from Vadakke Stand to the college venues starting early morning. Traffic will be managed by the Thrissur City police, with dedicated parking at the Fire Academy, DIET, and Ramavarmapuram Government VHSE. Food courts by Kudumbashree are operating at both colleges. Volunteers from NSS and NCC will assist with smooth coordination throughout the day. The event is powered by a coalition of government bodies including K-DISC, KILA, ICT Academy, Kudumbashree, and departments ranging from Planning and Local Self-Government to Higher Education and Industries. Local bodies such as the Thrissur district panchayat, Corporation, municipalities, block panchayats, and grama panchayats are also key partners.
