Jeep Issues Recall for Grand Cherokee Headrest Problem

The Grand Cherokee is currently Jeep's most important vehicle in America. In 2024 alone, it accounted for over 216,000 units sold – the US brand's top-performing nameplate by a significant margin, beating the Wrangler by over 60,000 units. The strong momentum has continued into 2025, with nearly 100,000 Grand Cherokee units delivered in the first half of the year. With that kind of footprint, even a small defect can affect a large number of owners – and that's exactly what's happening now, as more than 121,000 units have been included in a new voluntary safety recall. The issue affects both the 2023–2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee and its longer Grand Cherokee L counterpart. According to documents submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), a defect in the second-row head restraints may prevent them from locking into their upright position. The failure stems from an internal locking mechanism that can get stuck when the backrests are folded down, leaving the headrest folded forward. If the headrest does not lock upright, it falls short of the minimum 29.5 inches height required under federal safety regulations. The voluntary safety recall affects 78,157 units of the two-row Grand Cherokee, manufactured between May 16, 2023, and May 2, 2024. Meanwhile, 43,241 units of the Grand Cherokee L, built from May 16, 2023, through January 30, 2024, complete the list of affected units. Obviously, those manufactured outside this period are unaffected. The automaker traced the issue to specific production batches and identified the defective parts as sourced from Grammer Industries Inc. Stellantis, through FCA US, its North American arm, will address the problem by inspecting the second-row headrests on all affected vehicles and replacing them if necessary. The replacement parts are not subject to the same defective conditions and meet all regulatory requirements. The automaker should have already contacted dealers as of this writing, and is scheduled to notify owners in a phased rollout beginning September 5, 2025. No warnings or alerts are present in affected vehicles, so owners will need to rely on the recall notifications or VIN search tools to determine if their SUV is included. FCA US will also reimburse owners under its standard reimbursement plan where applicable. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee Teased with Tweaked Front End and Cabin

Jeep teased a refreshed 2026 , which will be revealed in full later this year. The mid-size SUV gets revised front-end styling with updated headlights and reworked grilles. The cabin is largely the same but features simplified climate controls and smaller knobs that now live on either side of the touchscreen. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the American brand's bestseller, but it's in need of an update. The latest generation arrived for the 2021 model year as the three-row Grand Cherokee L before adding a two-row variant for 2022. Last year, sales of the SUV declined 12 percent to 216,148 units (down from 244,594 sales in 2023). Luckily, Jeep is readying a refresh for the mid-size SUV, releasing two teaser images for the 2026 Grand Cherokee today that show a glimpse of its reworked styling and cabin. The changes to the Grand Cherokee's front end are subtle but significant. The headlights sport a new hockey-stick-shaped LED strip along the top edge that curves down to meet the upturned chrome trim that links the grille to the bottom of the headlight. The grille also has a new look with reworked silver trim that seems to take inspiration from the recently revealed Jeep Compass EV, currently only destined for Europe. The front bumper has been thoroughly redesigned, splitting the lower air intake into two separate elements. The top section is linked to the side vent via the daytime running light, while the chrome strip along the bottom of the lower grille now curves upwards at the outer edge of the front fascia. Anecdotally, we recently spotted a prototype of the refreshed Grand Cherokee in the Detroit area, and the camouflage was concentrated on the front, suggesting that the rear styling could remain largely unchanged. The cabin is also restyled, most notably on the center console, where the bank of climate-control buttons below the central touchscreen has been simplified into a single row of buttons. The two knobs are now smaller and live higher up, sitting on either side of the screen along with a few other buttons. The passenger screen also looks like it may have grown in size, but we'll have to wait for more details from Jeep before we can say for sure. Jeep says the Grand Cherokee will continue to be built at Stellantis' plants in Detroit and will continue to offer both the two-row and three-row L models, as well as the plug-in hybrid 4xe powertrain. More information about the 2026 Jeep Grand Cherokee will emerge later this year.
