Grapevine High School band surprised with chance to honor alum Post Malone

The Grapevine High School band just got the surprise of a lifetime. The group was invited to perform outside AT&T Stadium next Friday, a fitting honor considering the global superstar is a Grapevine High alum himself. It all started with a single email. "We are interested in seeing if the Grapevine High School band will be able to bring its members to perform some of Post Malone's hits." The message, sent from Dallas radio station 102.9, left Band Director James Rees stunned. All that was left to do, was surprise the students with the news. And they were shocked. "It's something you wouldn't even think could happen," said senior Maia Abed. "I can't wait!" The band will perform five of Post Malone's hit songs, including "Rockstar," "Sunflower," "Circles" and "Congratulations." They now have just a week to rehearse, but no one is complaining. "Learning the music is going to be challenging," Abed said. "But I know [we] want it so badly, it's going to be an awesome performance." As for what would make the experience truly unforgettable? Meeting Post Malone himself. "I hope we can meet you!" Abed said. The band is scheduled to perform next Friday outside AT&T Stadium ahead of the concert.

Grapevine High School junior earns perfect scores on both SAT and ACT

A perfect score on both the ACT and SAT? For most students, just thinking about those tests is enough to bring on a headache, but for one Grapevine High School junior, it's all in a day's work. Piyush Malik recently did what few students could ever dream. In October, he took the ACT for the first time and earned a perfect 36. Then in March, he nailed a 1600 on the SAT. "I was honestly euphoric. I was pretty happy when I saw the score," Malik said. But the achievement didn't happen overnight. Malik estimates he spent between 100 to 150 hours studying this year alone. Some of that time came through Grapevine-Colleyville ISD's Aspire program, which gives students opportunities to practice the tests early and often. "It's a tribute to Piyush," said his AP math teacher Sterling Bristow. "But again, he said this — it's not just something he woke up and did. He prepared for it and put in the hours. He's been taking the practice SAT since he was in 7th grade through the Aspire Program." While he may sound superhuman smart, Malik insists standardized testing hasn't even been his main focus. He's also active in robotics, debate and academic competitions, all while getting strong grades. "I also like to spend my free time outside playing pickleball with my friends and reading. I am not staying up until 3:00 a.m. each night studying." Now that the perfect scores are behind him, Malik is setting his sights on college applications. But his biggest piece of advice for others goes away beyond test day. "With hard work, you can achieve it," he said. "I know you can, because... I did."

GRAPEVINE - A Grapevine High School junior is being called a "young genius" and getting a lot of attention after earning perfect scores on both hisACTand SATexams. Piyush Mallick has a bright future ahead of him. Mallick is wrapping up his junior year at Grapevine High School. He got a perfect score on the ACT the first time he took it back in October of last year. The first time he took the SAT, he got a 1590. Just ten points away from a perfect score. But rather than be satisfied with that impressive number, he studied and took the SAT again this past March and got a perfect score of 1600. He's dominated academics and debate, and his life is really just getting started. Mallick has also got a perfect score on several AP tests. Mallick is also the UIL academics 5A state champion in math and number sense. Number sense is interesting because it's a mental math event. He was also part of the first-place team in this year's UIL 5A-district 6 cross-examination debate competition. To decompress, he likes to read and watch anime. What they're saying Inside Mr. Bristow's classroom at Grapevine High School, Mallick works through complicated math problems with his math coach and teacher, Sterling Bristow. Bristow has been able to watch Mallick flourish, having taught him three separate times. The two share a love of math with a student seemingly ready to become a teacher. "It's been one of the harder parts of my job is trying to find way to challenge and push Piyush," said Bristow. Mallick received some words of advice from his principal. "Just stopping and enjoying the moment and being present. These days will be behind you before you know it," said Principal Alex Fingers. What's next There's still one test Mallick has yet to master. "Yeah, I should be getting my license. I'm 16. I haven't really started learning much yet because I've been majorly busy this year, but hopefully this summer I can find some time to get that in," said Mallick. Mallick would like to attend either MIT, Stanford or UT Austin. He plans to study computer science and maybe become a software engineer like his dad.
