Grapevine High School band surprised with chance to honor alum Post Malone

CBS News01-05-2025

The Grapevine High School band just got the surprise of a lifetime.
The group was invited to perform outside AT&T Stadium next Friday, a fitting honor considering the global superstar is a Grapevine High alum himself.
It all started with a single email.
NAPA, CALIFORNIA - MAY 26: Rapper, singer and songwriter Post Malone performs live on stage during BottleRock at Napa Valley Expo on May 26, 2023 in Napa, California.

"I am reaching out because Post Malone will be doing a show at AT&T Stadium," it read. "We are interested in seeing if the Grapevine High School band will be able to bring its members to perform some of Post Malone's hits."
The message, sent from Dallas radio station 102.9, left Band Director James Rees stunned.
All that was left to do, was surprise the students with the news. And they were shocked.
"It's something you wouldn't even think could happen," said senior Maia Abed. "I can't wait!"
The band will perform five of Post Malone's hit songs, including "Rockstar," "Sunflower," "Circles" and "Congratulations."
They now have just a week to rehearse, but no one is complaining.
"Learning the music is going to be challenging," Abed said. "But I know [we] want it so badly, it's going to be an awesome performance."
As for what would make the experience truly unforgettable?
Meeting Post Malone himself.
"I hope we can meet you!" Abed said.
The band is scheduled to perform next Friday outside AT&T Stadium ahead of the concert.

Inside Eminem's drug-'fueled' recording of 'Kim' 25 years ago

True to one of his biggest hits, Eminem lost himself in the music. That's what happened during the making of 'Kim,' the hip-hop icon's most shocking song on his blockbuster album 'The Marshall Mathers LP,' which came out 25 years ago on May 23, 2000. The twisted murder fantasy about killing his then wife Kim Mathers became a horrorcore classic, with Eminem voicing both sides of the fatal blowup in graphic, gruesome detail. 9 Eminem shed his Slim Shady alter ego and revealed his true self on 'The Marshall Mathers LP.' Redferns Advertisement 9 'The Marshall Mathers LP' is the second-best-selling rap album of all time, after 'The Eminem Show.' Amazon 'Now bleed, bitch, bleed! Bleed, bitch, bleed! Bleed!' spits the enraged rapper after slitting Kim's throat. Producer Jeff Bass said that Eminem was 'f–king pissed off' about Kim — who wasn't letting him see their daughter Hailie at that time in their tumultuous relationship — when he came into the studio for one of the drug-'fueled' sessions. Advertisement 'So I came up with this very dark track, and then he literally went into the booth and started rapping about what we hear now on that record,' Bass told The Post. 'He came up with that probably in an hour.' And the recording session turned into a therapy session. 'He was able to get s—t off his chest that really bothered him personally,' said Bass. 'Obviously, he didn't kill anybody, but … there's some truth in some of it.' As the first song written for 'The Marshall Mathers LP' — which took its title from Eminem's real name — 'Kim' revealed a more personal side of the rapper who had adopted an alter ego for his previous album, 1999's 'The Slim Shady LP.' And while there were bigger hits such as 'The Real Slim Shady,' 'The Way I Am' and 'Stan' that helped propel his third studio LP to over 11 million sales in the US, the rawness of 'Kim' cut deep. 'It was not a radio record, but it was one of the most powerful records on this particular album,' said Bass. '[He] got to show the world another side of who he is.' Advertisement 9 'We would work in the studios for, like, 20 hours a day,' said producer Jeff Bass of recording 'The Marshall Mathers LP' with Eminem. Jeff Bass/Instagram 9 Eminem was married to Kim Mathers from 1999 to 2001 and then again for a few months in 2006. Getty Images But the track — which was a prequel to ' '97 Bonnie & Clyde' on 'The Slim Shady LP,' where Eminem and daughter Hailie dispose of Kim's corpse — scared Eminem's own label. 'Interscope [Records] called for a meeting, and they were like, 'What are we going to do with this? Now you're pushing the envelope,'' recalled Bass. 'And we're like, 'Well, it's freedom of speech, so we're allowed to say anything we want to say, right?'' Advertisement But 'Kim' was deemed too graphic to even be featured on the 'clean' version of 'The Marshall Mathers LP' — no amount of censoring was going to get rid of its murderous narrative. So the song was replaced by the 'South Park'-sampling 'The Kids' on the 'clean' version, leading many to buy that in addition to the explicit version in the days before streaming. 9 Eminem and longtime producer Dr. Dre won Best Rap Video at the 2000 VMAs for 'Forget About Dre.' FilmMagic, Inc 'Which is why I think it was so successful,' said Bass. 'It was brilliant.' But later in 2000, Kim sued Eminem for defamation over the song's lyrics, and they reached a settlement. 'Kim' was the third song that Eminem recorded about his ex-wife, who he was married to from 1999 to 2001 and then again in 2006 for only a few months. The first of those tunes was 'Searchin' ' on the rapper's 1996 indie debut 'Infinite,' which Bass also produced along with his brother Mark after they discovered Eminem in their hometown of Detroit. By the time they got to 'The Marshall Mathers LP,' they were in a nonstop groove. 9 Eminem performed at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards at NYC's Radio City Music Hall. Getty Images 'We would work in the studios for, like, 20 hours a day, and we would just come up with song after song after song after song,' said Bass, who shared production duties with Dr. Dre, Mel-Man and the 45 King. 'We just would keep creating to see what flowed together well on an album.' Advertisement But in addition to losing themselves in the music, they were also losing themselves in drugs. 'We were doing lots of drugs,' said Bass. 'It fueled what we were coming up with … We hadn't admitted yet that we were drug addicts. So to us, this was normal, just getting high, going in the studio, writing all this music, recording the music. Opioids — that was the choice of drug.' 9 'In my mind, it's always a possibility,' said producer Jeff Bass of possibly working with Eminem again. Jeff Bass/Instagram Bass would continue to work with Em on 2002's 'The Eminem Show,' producing and co-writing the hits 'Without Me,' 'Cleanin' Out My Closet' and 'Superman.' Advertisement 'We still were doing drugs, we were still doing all kinds of stupid s–t, but, you know, had major success,' he said. Then Bass produced and co-wrote Eminem's No. 1 smash 'Lose Yourself,' from his movie '8 Mile,' which won an Oscar for Best Original Song. 9 Eminem joined the Dr. Dre-led halftime show at the 2022 Super Bowl. Getty Images 'It was the biggest thing that I probably ever wrote,' he said. 'For me, musically, that was my pinnacle.' Advertisement After Bass took a break from working with Eminem on 2004's 'Encore,' the pair reunited for 2009's 'Relapse,' which would be their last album together. 'We were high, and it felt like s–t was just falling apart, but that was the drugs,' said Bass. 'And we didn't have a falling-out or anything. It was just creative differences.' Eminem released 'The Marshall Mathers LP 2' in 2013, but like most sequels, it didn't quite live up to the original. Still, Bass said, 'there's real nice, shining moments on that album.' 9 Eminem performed 'Stan' with Elton John at the 2001 Grammy Awards, where he won three trophies. Getty Images Advertisement Although Bass hasn't talked to Eminem 'in probably 17 years,' he doesn't rule out working together again. 'In my mind, it's always a possibility,' he said. 'And the funny thing is, our studios here in [Ferndale] Michigan are literally across the street from each other.' But they will always share in the legacy of 'The Marshall Mathers LP,' which is the second-best-selling rap album of all time — after 'The Eminem Show' — and is widely considered to be the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer's greatest work. 'At the end of the day, you know, it's a piece of work that will just be here in perpetuity, forever,' said Bass. 'It's a piece of history, which is amazing to be a part of.'

Miley Cyrus has post-‘Flowers' bloom on new album ‘Something Beautiful': review

Before her ninth studio album, 'Something Beautiful,' arrived on Friday, Miley Cyrus had finally got her 'Flowers.' Seventeen years after 'Meet Miley Cyrus' was coupled with the 'Hannah Montana 2' soundtrack to introduce her as a teen-pop princess distinct from her Disney Channel character, the 32-year-old singer had won respect along with her first two Grammys — including the prestigious Record of the Year — for her 2023 smash 'Flowers.' So 'Something Beautiful' is something of a victory party (in the U.S.A.) for Cyrus. 5 Cyrus makes a confident move into a new era where tapping the charts doesn't matter as much as leveling up the art. Getty Images for TikTok After even getting a co-sign from Beyoncé — their 'II Most Wanted' duet, a highlight of 'Cowboy Carter,' won Cyrus a third Grammy in February — she has nothing to prove anymore. And there's a sense of freedom in the ambition on 'Something Beautiful.' If it's not 'Endless Summer Vacation' — Cyrus' excellent 2023 album that gave us 'Flowers' — it's a confident move into a new era where tapping the charts doesn't matter as much as leveling up the art. She doesn't need to compete with the Sabrina Carpenters of the world. Taking a cue from Beyoncé — who navigated a similar transition with her 2013 self-titled surprise album — 'Something Beautiful' is a visual album that will be accompanied by a short film that will be released on June 6. And there is a cinematic scope to it with a dramatic spoken prelude and two instrumental interludes that are meant to bring a certain gravitas to it all. 5 Miley Cyrus performed her No 1 smash 'Flowers' at the 2024 Grammy Awards. AFP via Getty Images 5 Miley Cyrus won Record of the Year and Best Solo Pop Solo Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards. AFP via Getty Images But while we'll reserve final judgment until the film, the standalone album doesn't really need it. So just indulge Miss Miley — or use that skip button — and enjoy the rest of 'Something Beautiful.' Cyrus comes out swinging like a wrecking ball with the title track, which is one of the best things that she has ever recorded. Although it feels like it would have been an epic closer, it immediately sets a high bar for the album as she veers from D'Angelo-esque neo-soul to Pink Floyd-ish prog-rock — she has cited 'The Wall' as an inspiration for this album — in a way that you would've never imagined that Mickey Mouse would've never imagined. Indeed, there's a genre-blurring boldness to it that conjures up Prince, who Cyrus echoes when she sings 'watching the doves cry into the sunrise.' 5 Miley Cyrus performed at SNL 50: The Homecoming Concert' at Radio City Music Hall in February. Kevin Mazur/Peacock via Getty Images It gets the album off to a stellar start that continues with 'End of the World,' an apocalyptic, retro-'80s bop that is part Prince — think '1999' — and part Stevie Nicks, an influence who Cyrus previously channeled on 2020's 'Midnight Sky.' Although the single hasn't quite taken off like 'Flowers' yet, it deserves to be one of the bops of summer. Then there's 'More to Lose,' an aching breakup ballad that seems to hint at Cyrus' bruised heart from her split with ex-husband Liam Hemsworth: 'You're looking like a a movie star in a worn-out coat/So I throw away my mind/It happens all the time,' she sings, letting you feel every bit of her pain in her signature, singular timbre. Meanwhile, 'Easy Lover' is a breezy ditty that effortlessly straddles country and pop, blues and soul. Apparently Cyrus offered the song to Beyoncé for 'Cowboy Carter' before recording it herself. 'Tell 'em B,' she even ad-libs in a nod to Mrs. Carter that would have made perfect sense in a duet. 5 Miley Cyrus' 'Something Beautiful' album will have a companion film released on June 6. AP While we unfortunately don't get another duet with Beyoncé on 'Something Beautiful' — the two sounded way better together than they should have on 'II Most Wanted' — Cyrus gets help from Brittany Howard and Naomi Campbell(!), respectively, on 'Walk of Fame' and 'Every Girl You've Ever Loved,' two of the electro-dance tracks in the final stretch of the album. But here, they feel like a bit of a retreat back to the dance-pop of 'Endless Summer Vacation.' You kinda wish that Cyrus had had the courage of her convictions with which she started the album. It's as if she felt that she needed to hedge her bets. But 'Golden Burning Sun' and 'Pretend You're God' are dreamy reveries that set the blissed-out mood for summer romance. And when Cyrus ends the album with the psych-tinged ballad 'Give Me Love,' you'll be offering up just that.

Trump ally Nigel Farage makes dig at Prince Harry: ‘You sent us woke'

UK politician and President Trump ally Nigel Farage had an audience cracking up with a cheeky quip about sending Prince Harry to the US. The outspoken anti-immigration campaigner couldn't contain his laughter after making a playful jab at the Duke of Sussex during an interview Thursday at the Bitcoin Conference in Las Vegas, Nev. 'In my country, we tend to be a little bit behind,' said the leader of the right-wing Reform UK party. 'America has all the new ideas, they take a few years to cross the pond.' Getty Images 'You send us many good things, and what you're doing in this space right now, this administration is good,' Farage, 61, said. 'You also send us bad things, because you sent us woke.' The British politician then turned to the audience, pointing his index finger in the air. Advertisement 'But you know what, we've got you back, because we sent you Prince Harry in return, alright,' he quipped. Harry, of course, famously quit royal life in 2020 and hightailed it across the pond with his wife, Meghan Markle. 5 'We've got you back, because we sent you Prince Harry in return, alright,' Farage quipped. Advertisement Despite planting firm roots in the Golden State, the 'Spare' author and his Sussex counterpart have made virtually no effort in gelling with their Montecito community, one local resident claimed this week. Instead, locals say that Harry and the 'Suits' alum, 43, have remained 'practically invisible' to their neighbors ever since they snapped up their $14 million property — which has since doubled in value. 5 The Invictus Games founder, 40, quit royal life with his wife, Meghan Markle, in 2020 and hightailed it across the pond shortly after. Advertisement 'I very much enjoy bringing my kids up here. It's a part of my life that I never thought I was going to live.I feel as though it's the life that my mom wanted for me,' he said in Dec. 2024. 'To be able to do the things I'm able to do with my kids that I undoubtedly wouldn't be able to do in the UK — it's huge. That is a fantastic opportunity and I'm hugely grateful for that.' 5 The Sussexes have since set up camp in Montecito, Calif., where they reside with their two children: Prince Archie, 6, and Princess Lilibet, 3. Getty Images for the Invictus Games Foundation Thursday's quip isn't the first time Farage had spoken out about the Sussex camp. President Trump's close ally launched a scathing attack on Harry in recent weeks — saying his comments about his cancer-stricken, estranged father King Charles' ailing health were 'inappropriate' and 'unnecessary.' 'It's good to see the king here. I understand the treatment he is undergoing is pretty intense,' Farage told GB News earlier this month. 'He's putting a brave face on it. It was why the comments from his youngest son were so inappropriate.' 'Of all the things Harry said — that's what I found most upsetting,' Farage said of Harry's bombshell BBC News interview. Advertisement 'There's no conversation the king and Harry can have that won't end up on Netflix — there's no trust,' he added. 'As I understand, the king is undergoing regular treatment. It's tough.' In April 2021, Farage yanked up his welcome mat in a tweet slamming the Sussexes for their terse statement on the death of Prince Philip at age 99. 5 Harry had previously gushed over his new life in sunny California, saying that he 'very much' enjoys bringing his kids up in Montecito. 'The British public will not welcome Harry and Meghan back, even for the funeral.'
