Google introduces AI Mode shopping tool with US rollout underway

Google has introduced a groundbreaking AI-powered shopping experience called AI Mode, designed to simplify and personalise every step of the online shopping journey. The new features combine Google's advanced Gemini model with its Shopping Graph to create a smarter, more intuitive way for users to browse, choose and buy products online. Google has launched AI Mode, an AI-powered shopping tool using its Gemini model and Shopping Graph with over 50 billion listings. It offers visual search, smart suggestions, agentic checkout, and a new virtual try-on feature. Shoppers can now upload full-length photos to preview clothing realistically. The features are currently rolling out in the US to enhance shopping experiences. With over 50 billion product listings from global retailers to small local shops, the Shopping Graph offers users a comprehensive and up-to-date selection, refreshed every hour with more than 2 billion updates. By tapping into this massive database, AI Mode helps users find the perfect item by combining visual inspiration, smart suggestions and reliable product data. For example, when a user searches for a cute travel bag, AI Mode understands the intent behind the query and returns a browsable panel of curated images and listings, customised to the user's taste and needs, Google said in a blog. If the search is refined further—such as looking for something suitable for rainy weather in Portland—AI Mode runs simultaneous searches to understand the ideal materials and features, then updates the product panel with relevant waterproof options. Beyond browsing, Google is also enhancing how users make purchasing decisions. A new agentic checkout feature allows shoppers to track prices and complete purchases when the timing is right. After selecting a product's size, colour and preferred price, users can tap 'track price' and receive notifications when the cost drops. When ready to buy, tapping 'buy for me' triggers Google to automatically add the item to the cart and complete the checkout using Google Pay on the merchant's website, making the buying process more seamless than ever. This feature will roll out across product listings in the US in the coming months. The update includes a virtual try-on feature using personal photos. Google's try-on tool has already helped shoppers visualise clothes on a range of model body types. Now, it takes a step further by letting users upload their own full-length photos to see how clothing items might look on them. This experience is powered by a custom image generation model tailored for fashion, which accurately renders the way different fabrics fold, stretch and drape on various body shapes and poses. The result is a realistic try-on experience that helps shoppers confidently explore new styles. This new virtual try-on feature is currently rolling out in Search Labs in the US and supports billions of apparel listings including shirts, pants, skirts and dresses. When browsing these items, users will see a 'try it on' icon on product listings. Once selected, the tool quickly renders the outfit onto the user's uploaded image, making it easy to preview styles, save looks or even share them with friends for a second opinion. Google upgrades AI tools for shopping

Google's AI shopping tools will now let you virtually try on clothes using your own photo, the tech giant announced Tuesday at its I/O developer conference. Why it matters: AI is reshaping how we shop. It's going beyond recommending products and helping consumers visualize and buy products. Driving the news: Google unveiled a series of new AI features at Tuesday's event. The shopping features announced include shopping with AI mode, using AI to buy products and the new "try it on" feature. Google AI Mode Zoom in: Starting today, Google is starting to roll out AI Mode — a chat-like version of search — but shopping features will be added in the coming months. AI Mode uses Google's Gemini AI assistant together with its Shopping Graph to help consumers browse for inspiration and narrow down products, Lilian Rincon, the company's consumer shopping product vice president, told reporters. By the numbers: Shopping Graph has more than 50 billion product listings, from global retailers to local shops, and includes details like reviews, prices, color options and availability. Every hour, more than 2 billion product listings are refreshed on Google, Rincon said. "People shop across Google properties more than a billion times a day," Rincon said. Google Try It On virtual dressing room State of play: Google first introduced a virtual try-on tool in 2022 but the technology used AI models where consumers selected the one that best matched their body type. With Tuesday's update, consumers can upload a photo of themselves and see how the clothes look on them. What they're saying: "Our try-on experience works with your photo. It's not some pre-captured image or a model that doesn't look like you," Vidhya Srinivasan, Google's vice president of advertising and commerce, said during a live demo at Tuesday's event. Google told Axios that it worked with Levi's, Abercrombie, Staud, Pistola Denim, Quince and other brands for the try-on tech. How it works: Go to Google Search Labs and opt into the "try on" experiment that went live Tuesday.

Google is adding AI Mode to Search, here is how it works

The AI-fication of Google Search has levelled up. Google is rolling out a major upgrade to its Search experience with a new AI Mode, allowing users to ask complex questions and receive detailed, personalised results – all within the Search interface. The feature combines Search's real-time information access with AI capabilities to create a more intelligent search engine experience. It can be especially helpful for tasks like planning a holiday. With AI Mode, a single search could bring together details like ticket information, weather updates, and things to do, all in one feature is somewhat of an extension or the next step to the AI Overviews that you see in Google Search right now. Currently, when you search on Google you see an AI-generated summary on top, which is based on information from all the links below. AI Mode will be that but more detailed and personalised. The feature has been available as part of the experimental Labs. However, only to a select number of users – Google has a waitlist thing. But Google says that AI Mode will now be available to all Labs users in the US. That would still be a small number. 'We're removing the waitlist so anyone in the US can now get immediate access to AI Mode in Labs,' said Soufi Esmaeilzadeh, Director of Product Management for Google Google says the AI Mode works best on mobile, especially for multimodal queries that include both text and you are in India and you want to try out the feature, you should sign up to Google Experimental is also experimenting with bringing AI Mode outside of Labs. A small percentage of US users will start to see an AI Mode tab directly in the main Search says that besides providing answers to layered queries (like comparing the best health insurance), the AI Mode also supports follow-up questions and can tailor its results as users refine what they're looking for. Additionally, Google says it has also added new visual elements to the results in AI Mode. Over the next week, users will begin seeing rich visual cards for local businesses and products. These cards will offer key details such as ratings, opening hours, pricing, current promotions, and even real-time availability from nearby stores. Tapping on a product or place will pull up further details, allowing users to dig deeper or take immediate action like placing a call or getting results are powered by Google's Shopping Graph — a massive and constantly updated index of over 45 billion product listings. According to the company, more than 2 billion of these listings are refreshed every hour, ensuring users receive current, trustworthy addition to that, Google says that users in AI Mode will now also be able to revisit past searches. On the desktop, a new left-side panel will soon appear, allowing users to pick up where they left off. This is especially helpful for long-running tasks like planning a trip or making a big purchase. Each topic in the panel includes previously surfaced information, and users can continue asking follow-up questions without starting from scratch.'So many of the questions people ask are part of longer-running tasks and projects, and often they want to get back to the information they found. So now, we're making it easier to jump right back in on desktop,' Google's blog post company emphasises that these changes are still evolving and encourages users to try AI Mode via the Labs feature in the Google app. Esmaeilzadeh added, 'We'll continue to quickly improve and evolve AI Mode based on your input.'The AI Mode update to Google Search comes as the company is facing a critical lawsuit in the US wherein the court has ruled that the company is a monopolist in the search market. The case is currently in the remedies phase and there is a possibility that Google could be forced to sell Chrome and Chromium platform. Tune In
