Great Crossing wins Sweet 16 boys state championship
LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — Great Crossing High School opened in 2019 and quickly became one of the best boys basketball teams in the state. Six years after opening, they can call themselves state champions. Great Crossing and Montgomery County are final four bound The Warhawks took down Bowling Green, 71-61 to win the KHSAA Sweet 16 boys state championship on Saturday night at Rupp Arena. 'I'd be lying to you if I thought six years in we were going to be hoisting the trophy. On day one, you know, April of whatever, 2019, when these guys showed up, we felt pretty confident that we had an opportunity, you know, to do what we're doing tonight,' Great Crossing head coach Steve Page said. Future Kentucky big man Malachi Moreno shined in his final high school game, scoring 24 points on 10-of-11 shooting and grabbed 15 rebounds for another double-double, adding three blocks while playing in all 32 minutes. Mr. Basketball winner and future Kentucky Wildcat Travis Perry leads Lyon County to glory Moreno followed in Travis Perry's footsteps by winning a high school state title at Rupp Arena before moving on to making Rupp his new home at Kentucky. Perry led Lyon County to a win over Trent Noah and Harlan County to cut down the nets, beating Great Crossing in the state semifinals. 'It's definitely a surreal moment because I wanted to end my high school career on this floor holding a big ol' trophy and I know it wasn't my last time on this floor but my last time in a Great Crossing uniform so it's honestly surreal and coach is gonna have a tough time taking this jersey away from me,' Moreno said. Great Crossing looks to finish the job this weekend in state tournament The Warhawks returned this season with one goal: winning a state championship. Fellow seniors Vince Dawson (18 points) and Gage Richardson (15 points) helped them achieve that goal. Great Crossing beat Montgomery County in the state semifinal earlier on Saturday, winning 70-49. Great Crossing and Montgomery County are final four bound
LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The boys KHSAA Sweet 16 is slowly winding down with the state championship approaching on Saturday night. Montgomery County and Great Crossing both came out on top in their respective matchups in the Elite 8. The Indians faced a talented North Laurel team in a game that went down to the wire. Junior Tyce Jarvis came alive in the second half scoring 14 points helping will his team to a 69-66 win over the Jaguars. Despite a tough loss for North Laurel, junior guard Reece Davidson put up 41 points to end the season. Shortly after, Great Crossing took on Cooper. It was all the Warhawks from the start. Morehead State signee Vince Dawson led his team with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Kentucky signee Malachi Moreno followed with a double-double. (FOX 56) — North Laurel and Breathitt County started the second day of the KHSAA Sweet 16 boys state tournament with a thrilling ballgame, as the Jaguars emerged with a narrow 54-53 win over the Bobcats to advance. Montgomery County looking for more march magic this weekend at KHSAA Sweet 16 state tournament Montgomery County lit up the scoreboard in the second day of the game, nearly reaching triple digits with a 98-72 win over Lawrence County to move past the first round. This was the Indians first state tournament victory since 2013. Great Crossing looks to finish the job this weekend in state tournament The evening session got started with another lopsided game, as Great Crossing took care of business against Daviess County in a 69-37 win behind 21 points and 17 rebounds for future Kentucky big man Malachi Moreno. North Laurel High School looking for first Sweet 16 win Cooper took down Henderson County in the nightcap, 50-35, setting the state for the state quarterfinals. North Laurel will face Montgomery County on Friday at 6 p.m. with Great Crossing and Cooper following them at 8:30 p.m. Best season in DCA history ends at state tournament The teams that won Wednesday's first round games got the benefit to rest on Thursday, and now gear up for their next tests. Great Crossing looks to finish the job this weekend in state tournament
GEORGETOWN, Ky. (FOX 56) — The Great Crossing high school boys basketball team made its first trip to the KHSAA Sweet 16 state tournament last season, but lost in the state semifinals to Lyon County. The Warhawks will look to finish the job this year. Mr. Basketball winner and future Kentucky Wildcat Travis Perry leads Lyon County to glory Travis Perry was last season's Kentucky Mr. Basketball winner and led his Lyon County squad to the state title before moving on to play for the University of Kentucky the following season. This year, Malachi Moreno is looking to do the same thing this weekend before making Rupp Arena his new home next year. 'Every team there, they're there for a reason. So we can't go in a game expecting it to be a blowout, when we got to go in a game like it's going to be a dogfight and we got to play our best, play the hardest and be the winning team,' Moreno said. The Warhawks emerged from another difficult 11th Region, taking down Frederick Douglass in a nail-biting region championship game to punch their ticket back to the Sweet 16. Great Crossing wins 11th Region championship in thriller over Frederick Douglass Most of the core from last year's team is back for this postseason run, including Moreno, high-scoring guard Vince Dawson III and sharpshooter Gage Richardson. While that helps bring confidence on the court, that experience has helped this team stay composed off the court. 'I think our kids have stayed pretty levelheaded, we haven't gotten too deep into the weeds of what this means. I already know they were there last year. You know, every other year of our program, we've had multiple goals. This year, we had one goal to cut down the nets on Saturday night,' head coach Steve Page said. Danville Christian preparing for its first Sweet 16 appearance Great Crossing will face Daviess County in the first round of the state tournament on Thursday at 6 p.m. at Rupp Arena. Great Crossing wins 11th Region championship in thriller over Frederick Douglass
LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The high school boys basketball 11th Region championship game last year was an instant classic, with Great Crossing hitting a buzzer-beater to punch its ticket to the state tournament. Central Kentucky high school basketball highlights, scores: Mar. 7 Frederick Douglass had a chance to hit a buzzer-beater in this year's region championship on Tuesday night, but the three-point shot hit the front iron as time expired and the Warhawks defeated the Broncos 59-57. Kentucky signee Malachi Moreno had 21 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks while Morehead State signee Vince Dawson had 17 points to lead the Warhawks. After Great Crossing went up by double digits in the 4th quarter, the Broncos got back in it by hitting some massive shots combined with the Warhawks missing some clutch time free throws. North Laurel beats bitter rival South Laurel in 13th Region championship DeMarcus Surratt had 14 points to keep Douglass around, then Dakari Talbert banked in a huge three-pointer late in the 4th to get them back to within a couple possessions. After a missed shot with under 10 seconds to play, Aveion Chenault made an acrobatic putback and was fouled to make it 59-57 with under five seconds to play. Chenault (14 points) missed the free throw but the loose ball was off Great Crossing, so Douglass had one more shot. Talbert tried to get an open look, then passed to Tate Robinson who threw up a prayer at the buzzer which missed, giving the Warhawks the win. Danville Christian wins the 12th Region Championship over Mercer County 39-36 Great Crossing now advances to the KHSAA Sweet 16 state tournament, which begins on Wednesday, March 26 at Rupp Arena.
