Great Crossing wins 11th Region championship in thriller over Frederick Douglass
LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — The high school boys basketball 11th Region championship game last year was an instant classic, with Great Crossing hitting a buzzer-beater to punch its ticket to the state tournament.

Frederick Douglass had a chance to hit a buzzer-beater in this year's region championship on Tuesday night, but the three-point shot hit the front iron as time expired and the Warhawks defeated the Broncos 59-57.

Kentucky signee Malachi Moreno had 21 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks while Morehead State signee Vince Dawson had 17 points to lead the Warhawks.
After Great Crossing went up by double digits in the 4th quarter, the Broncos got back in it by hitting some massive shots combined with the Warhawks missing some clutch time free throws.

DeMarcus Surratt had 14 points to keep Douglass around, then Dakari Talbert banked in a huge three-pointer late in the 4th to get them back to within a couple possessions. After a missed shot with under 10 seconds to play, Aveion Chenault made an acrobatic putback and was fouled to make it 59-57 with under five seconds to play.
Chenault (14 points) missed the free throw but the loose ball was off Great Crossing, so Douglass had one more shot. Talbert tried to get an open look, then passed to Tate Robinson who threw up a prayer at the buzzer which missed, giving the Warhawks the win.

Great Crossing now advances to the KHSAA Sweet 16 state tournament, which begins on Wednesday, March 26 at Rupp Arena.

CdM's Max Douglass races to school record in 1,600 meters at state meet
The weather was a hot topic of discussion heading into the CIF State track and field championships, but in many cases, it was the athletes that brought the heat last weekend. Corona del Mar coach Bill Sumner looked at the temperature and saw it was a scorching 101 degrees when Max Douglass — the Sea Kings' distance running star — toed the starting line at Clovis Buchanan High on Saturday. Douglass had dug in during the state preliminaries on Friday to secure the school record in the boys' 1,600 meters. It could have been the last four laps of an illustrious high school career. That qualifying effort earned the Notre Dame commit a spot in the state final, a chance he took advantage of to drop his time to 4 minutes 7.65 seconds in a sixth-place, medal-winning performance. Sumner shared that he resorted to a trip to the hardware store to drive home race strategy during the postseason. He first utilized traffic cones and then string to make Douglass exercise patience in picking his desired spot on the field from the start. 'I put a string from the cut-in mark to the 200 lane one,' Sumner said. 'And I said, 'Max, you cannot cut in. You have to stay on the right side of that string for the whole workout.' … Sumner said that Douglass noticed a difference right away. The message was clicking. 'I said, 'That way, you get to pick your spot of where you want to be,'' Sumner recalled. 'When you get to the end of the first 180 [meters], you're going to say, OK, let me run there, and then you go there.' He's a strong enough kid, he gets to do that if he's fast enough. 'We practiced that for three weeks, I had put a string out, and he would not cross over that string. … Not the last meet, but the two meets before it, he stayed out there, came over, got third place or second place, whatever he wanted, and just tried to stay there as long as he could.' Douglass shed nearly two full seconds off his time from the day prior, creating separation between himself and Jim Robbins, who had held the CdM record in the event at 4:10.74 since setting the standard in the Southern Section Masters Meet in 1988. Sumner added that both Robbins and Brian Hunsaker, the Sea Kings' record-holder in the 3,200 at 8:53.7 since 1975, reached out to Douglass after the race. Douglass received an invitation into the Nike Outdoor Nationals at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. 'If you would have told me he was done Sunday morning, I was fine,' Sumner said. 'Every goal that he set, we reached — every single one. Everything that he wrote down, we did. It's like, 'You've got nothing to prove, you got the school record, you got a 1:53 [in the] 800, you got a sub-nine-minute two-mile [time].' That's it. That's a lot of stuff, but he still wants to give it one more try, man. One more try before he goes on to be a big college guy.' Ocean View's Jack Paavola also closed his career on the podium, claiming eighth in the boys' discus throw with a mark of 174 feet, 4 inches. The Seahawks senior's state performance was just half a foot off his career-best throw at the Masters Meet. Paavola has committed to Harvey Mudd.

Kate Douglass, Lilly King go 1-2 in King's last race in a U.S. pool at swimming nationals
In a passing of the torch, Olympic 200m breaststroke champion Kate Douglass overtook Lilly King, the 100m breast world record holder, in the 100m event in King's final career domestic race at the Toyota U.S. Championships on Friday. Douglass edged King by 23 hundredths of a second at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, a pool that the Evansville native King has been racing in since she was 10 years old. Both Douglass and King made the team for the World Championships in July and August in Singapore, which will be King's last major international meet. King has won a medal at a major international meet every year (save 2020) since her breakout 2016, when she won Olympic 100m breast gold after her freshman season at Indiana University. Maurer's mom, Lea, won relay gold and 100m backstroke bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Games. Luka Mijatovic, 16, finished second, which will likely be enough to make the world championships team once the meet ends Saturday. Mijatovic would be the youngest U.S. man to swim at worlds since Michael Phelps in 2001. World record holder Regan Smith won the 100m backstroke after placing second in the 50m and 200m distances. She can swim all three backstrokes, plus the 200m butterfly, at worlds. Campbell McKean, 18, took the men's 100m breast by lowering his personal best from 1:00.40 to 58.96 on Friday, one year after placing 21st at the Olympic Trials. Despite Sean Payton's promise to get Audric Estime more touches in 2025 and the excitement around rookie RJ Harvey, the running back position is one of the weaknesses of the Denver Broncos. Advertisement This suggested trade would add a proven lead back to the mix, give Harvey time to develop, and add overall depth and talent to the position. Bleacher Report's Gary Davenport suggested the Broncos could trade for Falcons running back Tyler Allgeier. Allgeier is entering his fourth year in the league, and after a stellar rookie season, his numbers have diminished. However, it's not because of a lack of talent on his end, it's because of the emergence of eighth-overall pick Bijan Robinson. As Davenport stated in his explanation, Robinson became a true workhorse for the Falcons last season. He garnered 365 touches, which was second in the league behind Saquon Barkley. Advertisement Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski added that the Falcons should explore trading the fourth-year running back because he has no incentive to sign an extension with Robinson as the workhorse in the backfield. Sobleski believes Allgeier has the workhorse ability, and the Falcons could get a Day Two pick for the back. In his rookie season, Allgeier had 210 carries for 1,035 yards. If you look back at college, Allgeier ran for 2,736 yards and 36 touchdowns in his final two years at BYU. That describes a workhorse pretty clearly. Advertisement This would make sense for the Broncos in the short term, but they'd likely look for Estime or Harvey to pay off in the long term. Estime had a slow rookie season, but Payton believes with adequate volume, he can make strides in 2025. As for Harvey, there's plenty of hype around the second-round draft pick. The addition of Allgeier would give the Broncos a proven workhorse, but could it slow the progression of their last two draft picks at the position? Allgeier does have the potential to be a starter in the NFL, and the Broncos, while full of potential, are one of the weaker proven backfields in the league.
