Great Crossing looks to finish the job this weekend in state tournament

GEORGETOWN, Ky. (FOX 56) — The Great Crossing high school boys basketball team made its first trip to the KHSAA Sweet 16 state tournament last season, but lost in the state semifinals to Lyon County. The Warhawks will look to finish the job this year.
Mr. Basketball winner and future Kentucky Wildcat Travis Perry leads Lyon County to glory
Travis Perry was last season's Kentucky Mr. Basketball winner and led his Lyon County squad to the state title before moving on to play for the University of Kentucky the following season. This year, Malachi Moreno is looking to do the same thing this weekend before making Rupp Arena his new home next year.
'Every team there, they're there for a reason. So we can't go in a game expecting it to be a blowout, when we got to go in a game like it's going to be a dogfight and we got to play our best, play the hardest and be the winning team,' Moreno said.

The Warhawks emerged from another difficult 11th Region, taking down Frederick Douglass in a nail-biting region championship game to punch their ticket back to the Sweet 16.

Most of the core from last year's team is back for this postseason run, including Moreno, high-scoring guard Vince Dawson III and sharpshooter Gage Richardson. While that helps bring confidence on the court, that experience has helped this team stay composed off the court.
'I think our kids have stayed pretty levelheaded, we haven't gotten too deep into the weeds of what this means. I already know they were there last year. You know, every other year of our program, we've had multiple goals. This year, we had one goal to cut down the nets on Saturday night,' head coach Steve Page said.

Kim Caldwell contract details revealed: Lady Vols coach's salary raised to $1 million

Lady Vols basketball coach Kim Caldwell is one of the highest-paid coaches in the nation after her first season at the helm. Caldwell agreed to a one-year contract extension on March 31 – two days after leading Tennessee to the Sweet 16 – that runs through the 2029-30 season. The extension was finalized in late June, and it raises Caldwell's annual salary to $1 million. Her original base pay was $750,000, which made her the seventh-highest paid coach in the SEC at the time. Caldwell replaced Kellie Harper, who made $1.1 million in her fifth season at Tennessee before she was fired. Caldwell's new contract makes her one of six coaches in the SEC making at least $1 million per year. Fewer than 20 women's basketball coaches across the country made $1 million annually as of March 2024, according to the USA TODAY head coach salary database. South Carolina coach Dawn Staley tops the country after her contract extension in January that set her annual salary at $4 million with an annual $250,000 escalator. Before that, LSU coach Kim Mulkey led the nation in 2024 at $3.26 million. The next highest-paid coach in the SEC is Texas' Vic Schaefer ($2.3 million), followed by Texas A&M' coach's Joni Taylor ($1.5 million) and Ole Miss' coach' Yolett McPhee-McCuin ($1,087,500). Caldwell's original contract contains a clause that will make her the highest-paid coach in the nation if she wins a national championship. Caldwell led Tennessee to a 24-10 record in her first season. The Lady Vols reached the Sweet 16, where they lost to No. 1 seed Texas in Birmingham, Alabama. Caldwell also led Tennessee to an upset of UConn, which went on to win the national championship. Kim Caldwell contract extension includes updates to family travel, private aircraft allowance The extension amended the section on travel for Caldwell's family. While her original contract included travel for her spouse and immediate family members, her extension also allows for "one pre-disclosed, documented child caregiver" to travel as well. Caldwell gave birth to her son, Conor Scott Caldwell, on Jan. 20. There's also an update to the amount of trips Caldwell can take on a private or charter aircraft "for coach's personal, non-business travel, and/or that of coach's guests and/or family." Her original contract allowed for up to three round-trip flights or six occupied legs. The extension upped that to 10 occupied legs or 15 occupied hours of flight time, whichever comes first. Caldwell was recently in Los Angeles at the Sparks game for Lady Vols legend Candace Parker's jersey retirement. She also visited with former Lady Vols Rickea Jackson, Rae Burrell and Mercedes Russell, who all play for the Sparks. Cora Hall covers University of Tennessee women's athletics. Trey Murphy III has mentored Spurs' Carter Bryant on his journey to the NBA

New Orleans Pelicans forward Trey Murphy III revealed that he has helped Carter Bryant on his journey to becoming the 14th pick in the 2025 NBA draft by the San Antonio Spurs. Bryant helped Arizona to the Sweet 16 last season, averaging 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and one assist on 37.1% shooting from 3-point range. He scored in double figures five times, including a season-high-tying 14 points, three rebounds, two steals and two blocks on Jan. 27. The 19-year-old met Murphy at the Nike Skills Academy and stayed in contact with him throughout his freshman year with the Wildcats. Murphy, speaking on the "Young Man and the Three" podcast, explained their relationship to host Tommy Alter and guest Jabari Smith Jr. I had seen him earlier because his trainer, Olin (Simplis), "The Guard Whisperer," used to work him out, and I knew him because of Nickeil (Alexander-Walker). I would see clips of him, and I was like, 'This kid has a chance. He is going to be pretty good because he already had the size and the skill with it.' I was talking to him at Nike Skills and we just stayed in contact. Throughout the year at Arizona, he would ask for advice and stuff like that. I would just try to help him through stuff and talk to him. I know, for me coming up, I would always love when older people would spit knowledge and give me game because it is free knowledge. Bryant logged six appearances with the Spurs last month in summer league, averaging 7.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 1.7 blocks and 1.2 assists on 28.6% shooting from the field. He wrapped up his stay with a 16-point, five-rebound performance on July 17. The 6-foot-7 forward is highly touted for his scoring potential, playmaking and ability to defend multiple positions, traits that were each on display in summer league. He also proved to be a reliable floor spacer after connecting on at least two 3-pointers in 12 games last season at Arizona. Bryant joins an organization on the rise, led by Victor Wembanyama, De'Aaron Fox and Stephon Castle, among others. After having the chance to talk to Murphy in recent memory, Bryant has a new cast of players that he can learn from next season and beyond.

ESPN: Pelicans receive failing offseason grade after draft-night trade

Headlined by an aggressive move to draft Derik Queen with the 13th pick, the New Orleans Pelicans were given a low grade by ESPN when assessing their offseason roster moves. The Pelicans traded the 23rd pick (Asa Newell) and an unprotected 2026 first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks for the draft rights to Queen. The deal has been widely criticized, with one executive telling The Athletic that it was the worst trade outside of Luka Dončić in the last decade. The organization, led by new president Joe Dumars, also drafted Jeremiah Fears with the seventh pick, acquired Jordan Poole and Saddiq Bey from the Washington Wizards and signed free agent Kevon Looney. The moves received a failing grade from Kevin Pelton. Grade: F The Hawks-Pelicans draft-night swap was seemingly the most lopsided transaction of the summer. It could pay off for New Orleans, but it was far too risky to be sensible -- particularly in the context of the Pelicans' other moves. New Orleans is betting on Jordan Poole being a playoff-caliber starting point guard and has overloaded its depth chart at center by drafting Derik Queen and signing veteran Kevon Looney. Queen was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year at Maryland, averaging 16.5 points, nine rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.1 blocks in 36 games on 52.6% shooting from the field. He helped lead the Terrapins to their first Sweet 16 appearance since 2016. Dumars and the front office highly valued Queen in the draft and believe he can step in and contribute at a high level. He defended their decision to take him, stating: "I've been doing this for way too long to give credence to naysayers." Queen debuted with the Pelicans in the NBA Summer League, averaging 14 points, 11 rebounds, 2.3 assists and one block. Though he is expected to be sidelined for three months with a wrist injury, the team is eager to get him on the court and seemingly has no regrets over its recent moves.
