Indian Hockey Legend PR Sreejesh Encourages Citizens To Partake In 20th Delhi Half Marathon
Last Updated: Indian hockey legend PR Sreejesh urges participation in the 20th Delhi Half Marathon on October 12, 2025, emphasizing the event's spirit and his journey of breaking barriers. Encouraging citizens to join the Delhi Half Marathon, Indian hockey legend PR Sreejesh also spoke about the spirit he observes during the marathon each year. The landmark 20th edition of the Delhi Half Marathon, a World Athletics Gold Label Race, is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 12th, 2025, and will be flagged off from Delhi's iconic Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Sreejesh, former goalkeeper of the Indian Men's Hockey Team and current coach of the Indian Junior Men's Team, who was honoured with the Padma Bhushan, made note of how participants in the marathon, just like him, break barriers and take part in large numbers 'I broke my first barrier when I chose hockey in a football-loving state like Kerala, and every step since then has been about challenging myself, not the world," he said. Registration is now open for all race categories – Half Marathon, Open 10K, Great Delhi Run, Senior Citizens' Run, and Champions with Disability. The registration window will close at 11:59 pm on Friday, September 19, 2025, or earlier if slots are filled. Virtual Run registrations for the Half Marathon, Open 10K, and Great Delhi Run are also open until 11:59 pm on Monday, October 6, 2025. Celebrated as the 'God of Modern Indian Hockey," Sreejesh enjoyed a glittering 18-year international career, earning 336 caps for India before bidding farewell to professional hockey after the Paris 2024 Olympics. True to form, he delivered a series of stunning performances to help India clinch a Bronze medal, following up on the historic Bronze win at Tokyo 2020. Throughout his distinguished career, Sreejesh collected numerous accolades, including the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year Award three times (2021, 2022, and 2024), the Arjuna Award in 2015, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award in 2021, and the World Games Athlete of the Year in 2021. Transitioning smoothly into coaching, Sreejesh led the Indian junior team to a memorable Junior Asia Cup title win in November 2024, continuing to contribute to Indian hockey's growing success story. Sreejesh's impressive resume also includes appearances at four Olympic Games (London 2012, Rio 2016, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024), two Asian Games Gold medals (2014 and 2022), an Asian Games Bronze medal (2018), and two Commonwealth Games Silver medals (2014 and 2022). He also played a pivotal role in India's triumph at the Asian Champions Trophy on four occasions (2011, 2016, 2018, and 2023). view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 18:01 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Delhi Half Marathon Organisers Remember Fauja Singh Ahead Of October 12 Event
The 20th edition of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon will be held on October 12 and will start from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, the organisers of the event said on Wednesday. The registration for the race categories, including half marathon, Open 10K, Great Delhi Run, Senior Citizens Run and Champions with Disability, will commence on July 17 and will remain open till September 19. The launch event was attended by Delhi's sports minister Ashish Sood and tourism minister Kapil Mishra among others. Vivek Singh, joint Managing Director of Procam International - the organisers of the Delhi Marathon, said Fauja Singh, the iconic marathoner who died at the age of 114 in a road accident on Monday, was a huge inspiration to all. "Fauja Singh ji had come for the Mumbai Marathon in 2016. I met him then. His specialty was that he was extremely disciplined. Whoever met him could not remain without being impressed and inspired by him," Singh said. "His dedication to the marathon was amazing. He maintained it throughout his life. The great double Olympic winner Eliud Kipchoge said, 'Those who are disciplined are truly free.' Fauja ji was completely true to this statement. It is very sad that he died like this." Commenting on the 20th edition of the event, Anil Singh, MD of Procam International, the promoters of the race said: "This 20th year of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon is deeply emotional for us more than a milestone; it's a celebration of a legacy built step by step, year after year. "What started as a vision to create a world-class sporting event in India has grown into a symbol of resilience, community, and hope. We've witnessed runners turn into role models, streets transform into stories of courage, and a city come alive with purpose." Also part of the event was former India hockey team skipper and current junior men's hockey team coach PR Sreejesh and Paralympic Committee of India chief Devendra Jhajharia.
