San Francisco park-naming contest goes hilariously wrong
A plan to ask the public to name a park being created from the partial closure of a highway has backfired, with suggestions including 'This is stupid. Let's not do it' and 'Really stupid park'. Nearly 4,300 entries were submitted to San Francisco Recreation and Parks' 'Great Park Naming Contest' after two miles of the Great Highway was permanently closed to create it, KRON4 reported. With the park project receiving 54 percent support in a public vote, many have used the naming contest to vent their frustration. Opponents say the park rangers have overstepped the authority of the state and should not decide how roads are used. They also say the plans do not address environmental concerns. Meanwhile, supporters say traffic will be moved on to under-utilized roads in the neighborhood, with space freed up for leisure. District 4 supervisor Joel Engardio played a major role in the 'Proposition K' public park, which will officially open on 12 April. 'Many of them have told me they didn't feel heard in their objection to it being on the ballot,' Engardio said. 'I take this feedback to heart because it's important to me that everyone is heard.' Now the citizens' frustration has spread to the list of names submitted. ‘Really Stupid Park': SF commuters use Great Highway park-naming contest to vent
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — Residents and commuters in San Francisco's Fourth District vented their frustrations with the permanent closure of a two-mile stretch of the Great Highway in March by submitting politically charged suggestions to San Francisco Recreation and Parks' 'Great Park Naming Contest.' Records obtained by KRON4 show that citizens submitted nearly 4,300 suggestions to San Francisco Recreation and Parks' park-naming contest. Responses ranged from silly to crude to thoughtful. SF to end free distribution of fentanyl paraphernalia without treatment Of the thousands of entries, roughly 100 recommended some variation of 'Parky McParkface' — a reference to the United Kingdom's famous research vessel Boaty McBoatface. More than 100 other submissions criticized or supported District 4 Supervisor Joel Engardio, who played a major role in the park's creation. In November, 54% of San Francisco voters approved Proposition K — an Engardio-backed ordinance, which permanently shuttered the segment of the Great Highway to establish a new public park. A majority of San Francisco residents in the Great Highway area, however, opposed the measure, citing traffic concerns. The backlash from local residents and Great Highway commuters spurred a movement to recall Engardio. In December, Engardio issued a statement in response to District 4 voters' cries for a recall. 'Many of them have told me they didn't feel heard in their objection to it being on the ballot,' Engardio wrote. 'I take this feedback to heart because it's important to me that everyone is heard.' It is a functional name that also markets the park well.' Pickleweed and Snowy Plovers Park 'These precious sand dunes once covered most of the western expanse of San Francisco. All of us who live and work in The Outer Richmond, Richmond, and Sunset neighborhoods need only dig a few inches down in our yards to reach the built over sand dunes. These precious remaining dunes along Ocean Beach are the only remaining local natural habitat for the fragile ecosystem of the Snowy Plovers and the dunes are full of pink, white and yellow glossy floral bloom from both the Pickleweed and Ice plants that creep over the dunes — so gorgeous, and such a treasure.' Golden Dunes Park 'Golden Dunes Park references the golden sands of Ocean Beach, the proximity to Golden Gate Park, the history of the Outside Lands region as miles of sand dunes, and the adjacent Sunset District's romantic name Golden Dunes Park, somewhat romantic in itself, also evokes the transitional nature of the space between the powerful surf, golden sands, and the bustling city by the Golden Gate that we see today.' Frontrunner emerges in contest to name SF's Great Highway park
The Brief A frontrunner has emerged in the contest to name San Francisco's latest park. The Great Park Naming Contest enters its next phase where the public evaluates suggested names based on a set of criteria. Opponents of the park were vocal in their opposition even in the naming contest. SAN FRANCISCO - Over the past two weeks, San Francisco Recreation and Parks has been taking suggestions on what to name its newest park, which was once the Great Highway. What we know Park officials said they received more than 4,200 entries. Coming in first place was 'Ocean Beach Park' with a total of 178 submissions. Not far behind in second place is 'Snowy Plover Park', named after the city's federally protected shorebirds. Starting on Thursday, the public will get a chance to review a refined list of names based on the results of a survey. The survey looks at the following criteria: Historical Significance; Connection to Nature and Environment; Iconic Placemaking; Community Resonance; and Appropriateness and Clarity. Some of the suggested names expressed frustration with the park, which was heavily opposed in the district of its proposed location. Names like, 'No one in the Sunset Wanted This Park' and 'The Great Mistake' were also submitted. The Great Highway officially closed to vehicular traffic last week as a result of the highly-contested Proposition K that passed in a vote last November. Opponents of the park say they've filed a lawsuit aimed at blocking it. What's next The public will be able to weigh in on the finalists to decide on a name. A timeline shows on April 9, park and rec staff will make recommendations t the Recreation and Park Commission which will determine the final name of the park. The park is slated to open on April 12.
