Nathan Fillion was a shy comic book kid. Now, he's a Green Lantern in Superman
Nathan Fillion knows what it's like to be a fan, as well as a person at the centre of intense fandom. In an interview with Q 's Tom Power , the Edmonton-born actor says he was a shy comic book kid who loved Spider-Man, the X-Men, Batman and Superman. Now, he's playing Guy Gardner — one of the characters known as Green Lantern — in the latest Superman blockbuster. "Having a love for it myself, I don't feel like I have to service fans out there, I feel more like I have to service me because I'm one of the fans," Fillion tells Power. "I am the fan with the fortunate experience of not only having a front row seat, I'm actually in the catbird seat." WATCH | Nathan Fillion's full interview with Tom Power: Fillion's character in Superman is one of many Green Lanterns in the intergalactic peacekeeping force known as the Green Lantern Corps. As a Green Lantern, his responsibility is to enforce the law and resolve planetary issues, but he's a deeply flawed man. "He's a jerk," Fillion says. "He has a chip on his shoulder. He has had a very tumultuous life growing up. He doesn't like the idea of being passed up or overlooked. He is a sexist. He is a narcissist. He is egomaniacal. He is self-centered." The actor reportedly fought to keep the character's iconic blonde bowl cut from the original comics. For his performance, he took inspiration from Sophia Petrillo, Estelle Getty's character on The Golden Girls. "She had a stroke and that part of her brain that filters out 'maybe I shouldn't say this' had been damaged," he explains. "As was Guy Gardner. He was in an accident. He was hit by a bus and spent some time in a coma at one point. And I said, 'I'm going to take that and say there was a click in there to an already damaged guy. Now, he just doesn't have that filter anymore.'" WATCH | Official trailer for Superman: Growing up in Edmonton, Fillion never could have imagined that he'd one day be sharing the big screen with one of the superheroes he admired. "I didn't know acting was a thing," he says. "I didn't know people would pay you to act. I had no idea what that was all about. I just wished I could be a superhero. I wished I could fly." Looking back, he credits his love of comic books for leading him to where he is today. "I am a fan," Fillion says. "I am a fan of comic books. All the stuff I got in trouble for when I was a kid, daydreaming and drawing in the margins of my binders when I should have been studying, it's all prepared me for this moment." Nathan Fillion brings chaos and charm as Guy Gardner in Superman and Lanterns
Nathan Fillion is stepping into the DC Universe as Guy Gardner, one of the most brash and polarizing members of the Green Lantern Corps. He'll debut the character in James Gunn's Superman, set for release in July 2025, and reprise the role in HBO Max's upcoming series Lanterns. Known for his long-running voice work as Hal Jordan in animated DC films, Fillion is now bringing a very different kind of Lantern to life one that's louder, ruder, and far more unpredictable. In recent interviews, Fillion described Guy Gardner as 'the last person you'd want to save you.' He's proud, impulsive, and high-strung, with a tough exterior that often masks insecurity and vulnerability. Fillion insisted on keeping the character's iconic bowl haircut, fully embracing Gardner's comic-accurate look. He also revealed that Lanterns features more profanity from him than any role he's played before, signaling a raw, grounded tone for the show. The Lanterns series will focus on a mystery rooted on Earth and follow John Stewart and Hal Jordan as leads, with Guy Gardner serving as a more chaotic presence in their orbit. Fillion says Gardner clashes with others easily, especially when things aren't going his way. His version of the character also appears in Peacemaker Season 2, where his personality is expected to collide dramatically with John Cena's no-nonsense antihero. Fans have already reacted with excitement, praising the casting and Fillion's comedic timing. Gardner is a complicated character equal parts obnoxious and heroic and Fillion seems eager to lean into every extreme. As DC Studios builds its new connected universe, Gardner's arrival promises to bring an irreverent and combustible energy to the Lantern mythos, balancing humor with conflict in a way that only Fillion can deliver.

Nathan Fillion teases Green Lantern's rivalry with Superman: 'Guy would jump at the chance to go head-to-head'
As anticipation soars for James Gunn's 'Superman', the film's star, Nathan Fillion , gave fans a glimpse into what they can expect when the Man of Steel returns to the big screen this weekend. In his role as Guy Gardner, a member of the Green Lantern Corps, Fillion is embracing the chaos, the comedy, and the complex dynamics that come with being a reluctant teammate to the world's most iconic superhero. Stepping into Gardner's boots was quite personal to the star, who said in a statement to ETimes, 'Superman's iconic, the best, the top, the most invulnerable, the most powerful, uncorruptible. If everything's going terribly wrong, you think, 'If only Superman were here.'' But Superman isn't just retelling a familiar origin story. Gunn's bold new vision catapults audiences straight into a world where the hero already exists, and where aliens, robots, and interdimensional monsters are just part of daily life. 'What really jumped off the page for me is that we're already in a world that knows about Superman. It's not our world, it's his. The comic book world. That's very fresh and very different," Fillion said. As for his own character, Fillion doesn't shy away from describing Guy Gardner as a man of "extremes" and flaws. 'You don't have to be good to wield a Green Lantern ring, you just have to have the will. And will is something Guy Gardner has in spades,' he explained. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 새로 나온 '실비보험' 비교가입시, "합리적인 가격과 실속있는 보장으로 맞춤설계"... 굿리치 [등록번호:제2006038313호)굿리치 보험대리점 (등록번호:제2006038313호] 가격 받기 Undo 'He's got that switch in his brain that's been flipped. He lacks the filter that says maybe don't say that part out loud. And as an actor, there's something very freeing about playing that kind of guy — about being a jerk. ' Fillion also hinted at a not-so-friendly dynamic between his character and Superman, played by David Corenswet . 'Guy thinks very highly of himself. He's ego-driven. So for everyone to think Superman is the best? That would make Guy rather resentful,' he admitted. 'I think Guy would jump at the chance to go head-to-head, toe-to-toe, cape-to-ring, so to speak, with Big Blue. Green vs. Blue.' While fans can expect super-powered clashes and cosmic stakes, Fillion promises that Gunn's signature emotional core won't be lost in the spectacle. 'Just think of everything James has done with all the projects he's touched — the warmth, the humanity, the relatable music, and now he's doing it with Superman. You're in for a treat.' Superman follows a young Clark Kent as he navigates his dual identity, balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. The film promises a fresh take on the beloved superhero, blending classic comic book sensibilities with the heart and humour Gunn is known for. The ensemble cast comprises of David Corenswet as Clark Kent aka Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer and Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher. The film that has a runtime of 2 hours and 4 minutes, releases in cinemas on Friday, July 11, 2025.

Guy Gardner Returns In Lanterns Following Superman Debut, And I'm Digging What Nathan Fillion Said About How His Character Will Be Different In The DCU Show
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. As someone who's been a Green Lantern fan for over 15 years and was disappointed by how Ryan Reynolds' Green Lantern movie turned out, I'm thrilled that this DC Comics property is getting another shot at live-action thanks to the DC Universe. First, we'll see the bowl cut-boasting Guy Gardner in action next month in James Gunn's Superman, and then we'll meet fellow Green Lantern Corps members Hal Jordan and John Stewart in Lanterns next year. It was announced at the end of March that Nathan Fillion will also reprise Guy in that upcoming DC TV show, and I'm digging what the actor had to say about how his Green Lantern character will differ there compared to how he's depicted in Superman. Lanterns will mark Fillion's third time playing Guy, as he's appearing in Peacemaker Season 2 this August alongside fellow Justice Gang member Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced) and the team's benefactor, Maxwell Lord (Sean Gunn). However, 2026 will be the first time we see this version of Guy interact with other Green Lanterns, and here's what the star of ABC's The Rookie said to EW about how that will look: I think he feels a little bit higher strung in Lanterns. I've done a scene in Lanterns, we filmed it already, where he's contently smug. It's neat to see him in different environments and how those different environments will affect a character. More Lanterns Coverage 'It Doesn't Lack Its Sci-Fi Magic': Lanterns Director Opens Up About The DC TV Show's Vibe, And Slow Horses And Black Mirror Fans Will Be Pleased There's A Wild Lanterns Theory Going Around Involving One Of The Creepiest Green Lantern Villains, And I Hope It Ends Up Being True Like his comic book counterpart, Nathan Fillion's Guy Gardner has a brash and arrogant personality that clashes with the more disciplined personalities of Hal Jordan and John Stewart, though the latter certainly isn't lacking in cockiness. Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre are respectively playing these characters in Lanterns, which will follow them investigating a murder in the American heartland. It's unclear how Guy will get involved, but I'm guessing this will be his first time meeting John and one of his many interactions with Hal if they've both been in the Green Lantern Corps for a while. Fillion also spent some time talking about Guy Gardner's overinflated ego, and how he's a prime example that just because you're a Green Lantern doesn't make you a role model. In the actor's words: What is very true about Guy you don't have to be good and pure of heart to be a Green Lantern. You just have to be fearless. You just have to have the will. And Guy Gardner thinks he can take on Superman. That's how fearless he is. No, you can't take on Superman, dude. I'm curious to learn how Guy Garner ends up factoring into Lanterns, as this story is about Hal and John, so he should only be there to support them rather than steal the show. That said, considering this Green Lantern TV show will also feature Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, I wouldn't mind whatsoever seeing Guy trash talk the Korugarian who was once a Green Lantern and now wields the yellow energy of fear. If there's one thing Guy knows how to do, it's annoy an adversary… and his allies too, actually. Lanterns is expected to premiere on HBO sometime in early 2026, with episodes also being available to stream with a Max subscription. Watch Nathan Fillion bring Guy Gardner to life for the first time when Superman is released on July 11.
