Chris Long gives brutally honest assessment of Rams' 2025 season

The Los Angeles Rams are an interesting team heading into the 2025 NFL season. On one hand, they were within a touchdown of the Super Bowl champions and barely lost the NFC Divisional Round in 2024. They also kept all their key players, got more experienced on defense and added receiver Davante Adams. But on the other hand, they never truly dominated a game in 2024 with the 20th-best scoring offense and 17th-best scoring defense. They also have an aging and injured veteran quarterback in Matthew Stafford and serious questions in the secondary and offensive line. All of that led ex-Rams defensive end Chris Long to give a brutally honest assessment of their outlook for the year based on their 2024 makeup. "I don't look at the Rams as one of these juggernaut teams," he said on the "Green Light with Chris Long" podcast. "They're the classic, 'Nobody wants to play them in December and January' team. It doesn't mean that they're going to be the one seed in the NFC." This is more or less what a lot of pundits believe about the Rams in 2025. L.A. didn't look like a serious Super Bowl contender until the second half of the season, and even then, they weren't beating teams by a lot or even scoring a lot of points. The Rams won because of Stafford and the defense until they ran up against the Philadelphia Eagles running game. Now, Sean McVay and Les Snead attempted to fix those issues with the Adams signing and other moves this offseason. But it might not be enough unless Stafford has an all-world year. They should still be competitive in the grand scheme of the NFC, though.

Saquon Barkley's recent comments about a sudden retirement sparked a frenzy (Image via AP) Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley may have sparked a social media frenzy with his recent comments about retirement, but those closest to him aren't hitting the panic button just yet. In fact, two of his Eagles teammates—Cooper DeJean and Reed Blankenship—believe the media and fans are reading too much into a casual reflection from the star rusher. Saquon Barkley says retirement could come 'out of nowhere' like Barry Sanders Saquon Barkley's comments came during an appearance on the Green Light with Chris Long podcast, where he shared how he envisions stepping away from football someday. I'll probably be balling and just be like, yeah, and call it quits.' I think (Darius Slay) has said that before. You know (Brandon Graham), people like that. I mean, if it's over, it's over.' 'I don't think it's anytime soon,' DeJean added. 'No, no, I don't think so either,' Blankenship concluded. 'He's in a great position where if he was, he's put his time in, man.' What Saquon Barkley's retirement talk means for the Eagles

Saquon Barkley has had a whirlwind offseason following the Eagles' Super Bowl win over the Kansas City Chiefs in February. Philadelphia's All-Pro running back made waves for a golf outing with President Trump, attended the MET GALA, and served fans cheesesteaks at Geno's after landing the cover of Madden NFL 26. Barkley is loving life, but a recent interview has some Eagles fans nervous about the future. During the most recent edition of the 'Green Light with Chris Long,' Barkley hinted at a looming retirement. 'That's a great question. I'll probably be one of those guys that it would be out of nowhere. I would probably just wake up one day, whether it's next year or two years or four years, and just be like, 'Yeah, it's over.'' Advertisement Barkley then referenced the legendary Barry Sanders, who walked away from the Detroit Lions and peacefully left millions on the table with his decision. 'One of my favorite players of all time, probably my favorite player of all time, is Barry Sanders, so probably similar to that. Maybe one day it will be out of nowhere. I'll probably be ballin' and just be like, 'Yeah,' and call it quits.' Barkley could just be talking and experiencing the varied emotions of an all-time great season and his mortality as a legendary running back who doesn't want to exit the game with a down year or multiple injuries. With Philadelphia five days from a mandatory minicamp, we're examining how Barkley's comments will impact the Eagles. According to The Athletic, of the 11 running backs since 2000 with 400+ carries in a single season, none have finished inside the top 15 the following season. That list includes Derrick Henry, Jamal Lewis, and Shaun Alexander. Philadelphia signed A.J. Dillon in free agency, and Will Shipley is a talented dual-threat. With 13 picks in the 2026 NFL draft, the Eagles could add another rusher next year. Barry Sanders affect Sanders rushed for 2,053 yards in 1997, and then the Lions running back only played one more season before walking away. An Eagles repeat could set the table for Barkley to exit stage left, or the running back could play out the deal, ensuring ten years in the NFL. Financial implications Barkley led the charge for running backs to be paid more, and the Eagles running back reset the market entirely, becoming the highest-paid ball carrier in NFL history. Advertisement According to Adam Schefter, the two-year, $41.2 million deal makes Barkley the NFL's first $20+ million a year running back and the highest paid at the position in league history. According to Over The Cap, the extension creates $1,332,000 in salary cap space. Timetable As long as Barkley maintains his elite status, he'll be around until 2027 at the earliest. Barkley's salary isn't guaranteed for 2028, and he has a void year established for 2029 when he'll be 32 years old and count $31 million against the salary cap. The new contract is fully guaranteed for $36 million at the time of signing. The full guarantee includes Barkley's 2025 and 2026 salaries, workout bonuses, and option bonuses. $2.5 million is guaranteed in 2027. Another $15 million in incentives is available. Saquon Barkley says his eventual retirement will probably be 'out of nowhere'

Saquon Barkley isn't hanging up his cleats yet, but don't expect to have a warning before he does. The Philadelphia Eagles running back dazzled during his first season in the City of Brotherly Love, playing a big role in delivering the second Super Bowl victory in franchise history. Advertisement During the June 4th episode of the "Green Light with Chris Long" podcast, Barkley made a different headline this time after he was asked about retirement. The former Eagles defensive end, Long, posed the question about how the star running back will one day walk away from the game. "I'll probably be one of those guys that it'll be out of nowhere," Barkley said. "I'll probably just wake up one day, whether it's next year or two years or four years, and just be like, 'Yeah, it's over.'" While it seems unlikely that retirement could come in the near future for Barkley, it could sound alarms in Philadelphia given the recent run of players calling it an early career. Most recently, it was 29-year-old Frank Ragnow that opted for retirement. The now-former Detroit Lions center was arguably the best in the sport at his position, but said he plans to prioritize is health now. Advertisement In terms of passion for the game, however, Barkley doesn't envision losing that anytime soon. "I don't think I will ever lose that passion," Barkley said. "I'm just a competitor." He added that the competitive nature will always be there, but likened his eventual retirement to Barry Sanders, who shockingly stepped away from the game after just 10 seasons. The Lions Hall of Fame running back retired at age 30. "One of my favorite players of all time, probably my favorite player of all time, is Barry Sanders, so probably similar to that," Barkley said. "Maybe one day it'll be out of nowhere. I'll probably be ballin' and just be like, yeah, call it quits." Advertisement Barkley has certainly achieved plenty in his career to this point. He has won a Super Bowl and was named an All-Pro, the Offensive Rookie of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year and selected to the Pro Bowl three times. In 2024, he was just 101 yards away from setting the NFL's all-time single season rushing record. Despite that lengthy list of accomplishments, Barkley is still just 28 and only has seven seasons under his belt. If Barkley is using Sanders as a reference, that means he feels he still has some unfinished business – even if he's already checked off most of the boxes.
