More snow? Denver's late April snowstorm could be the last

DENVER (KDVR) — It has felt like summer in Denver, but the late April snowstorm reminded Coloradans that snow wasn't over yet. It's been a mild winter in Colorado, with even March, the snowiest month, recording only 2 inches of snow, marking one of Denver's least snowy Marchs in history. April brought more warm weather, with temperatures hitting a record 85 degrees and many days in the high 70s. The recent snowstorm on Friday served as a reminder of winter, leaving over a foot of snow, delaying over a thousand flights and shutting down high country roads. While this snowstorm left as much as over 5 inches in Denver, Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Greg Perez said it could be the last. A Colorado meteorologist's rule of thumb is that the snow is usually over after Mother's Day, which lands on May 11, but looking at the upcoming forecast with temperatures staying in the 60s and 70s with a few spring showers, Perez said the late April snowstorm was likely the last for Denver. Perez said Denver is getting warmer and closer to the severe weather season starting in May. This means storms, hail and strong winds, but no snow. FOX31 Weather: View the latest Denver forecasts, maps and radar While the latest Denver snowstorm could likely be the last in the Mile High City this season, it wouldn't be out of the question to see another storm heading into May. According to the National Weather Service, Denver has seen snow as late as the end of May and even into June. As for the rest of Colorado, Perez said there's still more snow on the way. Colorado has seen mountain snow through the middle of summer, but it usually slows down by mid to late May. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rare weather phenomenon caught on camera in Elizabeth Thursday

DENVER (KDVR) — While snow fell across Colorado on Thursday, a rare weather phenomenon was captured on camera near Elizabeth. It wasn't just a snowstorm — one FOX31 viewer captured a video of snow falling through the trees in Elizabeth when a rumble accompanied the flakes, creating the rare phenomenon known as thundersnow. Denver weather: Afternoon snow and wind, Pinpoint Weather Alert Day In short, thundersnow is the same as a thunderstorm, but instead of rain, it's snow. However, according to Pinpoint Weather Meteorologist Greg Perez, it doesn't normally occur in the winter because there isn't as much energy in these types of systems. The National Severe Storms Laboratory said thundersnow occurs when there is a warm front with relatively strong instability and abundant moisture above the surface. Perez said this is rare because in snowstorms, there is a lack of heat and low cloud levels. Perez said it's also rare because it can go unheard, especially when the snow muffles the sound of the storm. FOX31 Weather: View the latest Denver forecasts, maps and radar In 2024, Colorado saw a similar storm, where a FOX31 viewer captured a video of thundersnow near Lookout Mountain. The storm brought in rain, hail, snow and thunder in late March. A little more than a year later, the phenomenon was captured on camera again. Rain and snow are expected across Colorado, including in Denver, until Saturday, then the city should start to warm up next week. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
