Judge orders ICE to stop forcing detainees to sleep on dirty concrete floors

Kaplan indicated at a hearing Tuesday that his short-term restraining order would be followed quickly by consideration of the detainees' motion for a longer-term injunction and the certification of a class action that would provide more sweeping protections for those detained by ICE. The judge's order comes amid broader national concerns about the conditions ICE detainees have been subjected to amid the Trump administration's mass deportation and pressure to ramp up arrests. Facilities meant for short-term detention have become overcrowded and used for more prolonged confinement, with strains on supplies and access to attorneys. A federal judge in California ruled last month that conditions at a temporary facility in Los Angeles were similarly deficient, requiring ICE officials to provide for more robust access to detainees' lawyers. The New York-focused lawsuit was filed by Sergio Alberto Barco Mercado, a citizen of Peru who lives in New Jersey with his wife and two young children. According to court papers, Barco Mercado was detained by ICE on Friday after appearing for a court date at the Manhattan building that houses immigration offices and short-term detention facilities. Barco Mercado's lawsuit said the detainees are given no access to medical care, showers or changes of clothes. At Tuesday's hearing, a lawyer for Barco Mercado told the judge that between 40 and 90 people are forced to share one or two toilets in open view of the holding cells. 'They are also being subjected to unsanitary and unsafe conditions, sleeping for days or weeks on a concrete floor with only an aluminum blanket, often with insufficient space to even lie down, often sleeping near the toilets,' the lawyer, Heather Gregorio, said. Gregorio also said it was difficult to have a private phone conversation with her client while he was detained. The phone call was limited to one or two minutes, with a guard standing next to Barco Mercado, who 'could hear a second person breathing audibly on the line,' Gregorio said. Gregorio said detainees are given 'two, essentially inedible, small meals a day.' A Justice Department lawyer, Jeffrey Oestericher, responded: 'I'm told it's two nutritious meals. But as far as the specifics — whether it's military meals — I don't have the specifics on that.'

Philippines explores World Games hosting

The Philippines is exploring the possibility of hosting the World Games. The World Games is a quadrennial multi-sport event which features sports and events that are not in the Olympic programme. Sports featured include baseball and softball, billiards, cheerleading, dance sport, and rugby. According to the Philippine Sports Commission, this interest in hosting started during a conversation between International World Games Association President José Perurena López, Chief Executive Officer Joachim Gossow, and Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Patrick Gregorio. "The World Games is all about bringing together the athletes and the community for sports," said Lopez. "One important aspect in hosting the Games is the involvement of people. You don't need new facilities, we don't give it to big cities. What we want is a host that will bring together its people and give the attendees a tournament they will always remember," added the World Games Association president. Gregorio replied, "What we can offer is a game with a heartbeat," to which Gossow answered "Well, you are one point ahead of everybody." "We can do this for the Philippines. Imagine getting everyone involved to welcome 110 countries and give them the warmth of Filipino hospitality," said Gregorio. "This is achievable." Bidding is open up to 2026 with the next host to be announced in the same year. Should the Philippines push through and win the bid, then it would be the first Southeast Asian country to host the multi-sport event. The 2029 edition will be held in Germany where 5,000 athletes in 34 sports are expected. —Justin Kenneth Carandang/JMB, GMA Integrated News

Additional P5K allowance for athletes among PSC's initiatives under new chair Gregorio

Newly-installed Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chair Patrick 'Pato' Gregorio on Tuesday revealed that national athletes and coaches will receive an increase in their allowance as part of the sporting body's new initiatives. In the PSC general assembly held on Tuesday, Gregorio said the increase will be P5,000 across the board for national athletes and coaches starting August 2025. "'Yang sinet aside na budget na 'yan, magre-reallocate tayo but that is a very small amount sa kaligayahan, kumpiyansa, and motivation na binibigay natin sa mga atleta," Gregorio said. Aside from an increase in athletes and coaches' allowances, the PSC will also do immediate interventions such as simplification of training tracksuit procurement, installment of a new concessionaire for athletes in PSC facilities, 24/7 help desk for athletes' support, approval of the Implementing Rules and Regulation for the Philippine Sports Training Center, and streamlining of allowance disbursement. Gregorio also revealed his key priorities under his leadership: enhancing athletes' welfare, professionalizing sport governance and facilities management, and boosting sports tourism. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Auburn baseball adds Eddie Madrigal, Logan Gregorio from transfer portal

A pair of solid bats are heading to the Plains The transfer portal continues to be kind to Auburn baseball as the Tigers have grabbed two more solid bats. Former Northern Illinois ironman Logan Gregorio and ex-Saint Mary's utility player Eddie Madrigal announced their commitment to Auburn on Thursday, running Auburn's transfer portal haul to eight players. Gregorio was the first player to announce his transfer to Auburn on Thursday. The rising senior from Naperville, Illinois announced his transfer on social media, where he thanked head coach Butch Thompson, as well as Karl Nonemaker and Everett Teaford for the opportunity. Gregorio earned all-MAC second-team honors after hitting .333 with 18 home runs and 69 RBI for the Huskies in 2025. He led the team in several categories such as average, home runs, RBI, hits, doubles, and slugging percentage. Later in the day, Madrigal announced his intent to transfer to Auburn after spending three seasons at St. Mary's. Madrigal earned several postseason honors, including All-WCC First Team, ABCA All-West Region, and second-team All-America honors from the ABCA and NCBWA. Madrigal is viewed as the potential replacement for Cooper McMurray; however, there could be an issue as Madrigal is receiving buzz from the MLB draft. Should he elect to stay at Auburn for his final season, he would bring plenty of power to Auburn's lineup after a 2025 season that saw him hit 22 home runs and plate 79 runs while hitting .368. Madrigal and Gregorio join a growing list of players that are set to transfer to Auburn, including UAB infielder Todd Clay, Texas State infielder Ryne Garber, and Western Kentucky pitcher Drew Whalen. Newly appointed Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman John Patrick "Pato" Gregorio took his oath of office on Wednesday. Gregorio took his oath before Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, the PSC said. Present during the ceremony were Bases Conversion and Development Authority Chairperson Hilario Paredes and Gregorio's family. Gregorio replaced Richard "Dickie" Bachmann. In partnership with the Philippine Olympic Committee, the Philippines continued to achieve success in the global sporting scene during Bachmann's term. Under Gregorio, the Philippines will also compete in the 2025 Southeast Asian Games this December and will host at least two international events: the FIVB World Championship in September and the inaugural FIFA Futsal Women's World Cup in November. Gregorio previously served as chairman of the PBA during its 40th season and president of the Philippine Rowing Association. — Anna Felicia Bajo/VBL, GMA Integrated News
