Pedro Pascal Opens Up About His Dog Being His Savior During Dark Days
While is easily one of the most recognizable faces in the entertainment industry now, it wasn't always sunshine and rainbows for the Game of Thrones alum. In fact, the veteran actor had a prolonged struggling phase where he wasn't able to secure any decent role. While talking in a recent interview, Pascal revealed that it was his dog who helped him sustain the hard times. So, here's what the 50-year-old thespian had to say about the impact that his pet had on him during his formative years. While speaking in an interview about a horde of topics, The Fantastic Four: First Steps star also opened up about the role his dog played in his life while he was struggling to make it in the entertainment industry. At the time, the actor had also lost his mother, making it harder for him to continue. Despite arguably being at his lowest, Pedro Pascal always had someone waiting for him at his home, in the form of his pit-bull-mix rescue, Gretta. 'She saved my life, that dog, because she gave me someone to go home to,' the Primetime Emmy nominee stated to Vanity Fair. Pascal also recalled the first night he spent with his dog. Having agreed to foster the puppy for a friend, he witnessed the dog jump into his bed while he listened to his neighbors watching a film. Feeling the warmth of the puppy alongside him, the Materialists actor then decided to keep the puppy and name it Gretta, after one of the characters from the movie that his neighbors were watching. Talking about the aftermath of Gretta's demise from old age, Pedro Pascal remarked, 'I think about how poor I was when I had Gretta. I think about when I had double shifts and I couldn't find anybody to let her out and we were living in this shithole apartment in Red Hook, and I think about the bougie life she would be leading with me now as opposed to then and I grieve, I really do.' Pedro Pascal wanted to quit acting. His community didn't let him.
If you feel like Pedro Pascal is everywhere right now, it's because he kind of is. This week, the 50-year-old star of such critically-acclaimed shows as 'The Last of Us' and 'The Mandalorian' — as well as the buzzy new A24 film 'Materialists' — appeared on the cover of the July/August issue of Vanity Fair. In a heartfelt interview with contributor Karen Valby, he attributed his success as an actor to the assistance he took from 'angels around him': his friends, family and even his late pit bull mix, Gretta, whom he grieved before his big break. 'In my 30s I was supposed to have a career,' Pascal said to Vanity Fair. 'Past 29 without a career meant that it was over, definitely.' After the death of his mom Veronica, who died tragically by suicide, the Chilean American, then 24, worked in restaurants and bars while trying to make it as an actor. Pascal often contemplated changing his career but was urged by his oldest sister, Javiera Balmaceda, to stay on course. 'When Pedro would say, 'I'm going to nursing school' or 'I'm going to be a theater teacher,' it was just like 'No, no, no, no! You're too good!'' Balmaceda said. 'The one thing we'd never allow Pedro to do was give up,' she added. During this time, his friends would buy him groceries, Balmaceda would give him money to make it through the week, and his college friend, actress Sarah Paulson, would let him use her sister's car and give him her per diem money from her performing jobs. Pascal also credited his dog with giving him the excitement he was missing. '[Gretta] saved my life, that dog, because she gave me someone to go home to,' he said. This year, the award-winning actor reprised his role as Joel Miller in the second season of the HBO's hit series 'The Last of Us' and starred in Celine Song's romance film 'Materialists,' where he plays Harry Castillo, a desirable bachelor. Pascal will cap off his packed summer by appearing alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Ari Aster's western 'Eddington' and entering the Marvel cinematic universe as Reed Richards, also known as Mister Fantastic, in 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps,' sharing the screen with Vanessa Kirby.

Pedro Pascal is a new phenomenon in world cinema, which is both a surprising and heartening thing. Unfortunate too, if you consider that it took him so long to become the audience's favourite. He opened up on his newfound popularity, growing up in an immigrant family, the struggle in the industry, his mother's suicide, being bullied as a 'strange' kid, and so much more, in an interview with Vanity 50, is now working on the new 'Avengers' movie - 'Doomsday', and he was on his way to visit Robert Downey Jr. when the interview took place. An equal parts emotional and pragmatic person, Pascal, revealed that his mother died by suicide when he was still 24, doing his bit to kick off an acting career in Los told the interviewer that his idea of living and enduring the hardships of those days was simply to ask, 'You think not getting a job can break me? You can't break me, I'm already broken.' Recently seen in the romantic drama 'Materialists', Pascal shared how his mother's untimely death broke something in him, and he returned what the article described as a "hollowed man".It was due to the efforts of his best friend, actor Sarah Paulson, who referred his work to the co-creator of 'Games of Thrones', David Benioff, that Pascal eventually landed the iconic role of Oberyn Martell in the series. He described it as the place where "all the palm trees are the same height."For Pascal, going to middle school was especially a harrowing experience because he was bullied for "being a weird, sensitive kid. For being an attention-hungry kid. For being in love with the movies and theatre and art."The actor revealed that he was just 16 when he took acid, and called his mother to check in and let her know that he was going to stay out that night. However, when his mother told him that she was planning for a family movie night, he left to be with her, and "sat mute and paralysed, tripping in the back seat as they drove to see John Sayles's 'City of Hope'.""I was having a really hard time when I was 18, 19, 20. I was struggling really badly with insomnia. I was reading James Baldwin and watching movies like 'Once Were Warriors' and 'Muriel's Wedding'. I just was like an open wound to the reality of life," he loves that he's being adored all across the globe right now. He is aware of the mass popularity that he's gained now, at 50, and how everybody keeps saying that he should have been discovered like this many years like anyone else in their 50s, Pascal also has a formula. He told the magazine, "Stepping into my 40s, I felt adult and empowered. Fifty felt more vulnerable - much more vulnerable. More so, more so. What a silly thing for a 50-year-old man to have all this attention!
