ESPN proposes 1 final move to complete Seahawks offseason

The Seattle Seahawks have been committed to improvement this offseason. After acquiring a slew of talents this offseason, including quarterback Sam Darnold and wide receiver Cooper Kupp, general manager John Schneider has stayed vigilant in his pursuit of upgrades. Earlier this week, Schneider signed cornerback Shaquill Griffin, proving he's still monitoring the market for talent. ESPN recently wrote an article proposing one final move all 32 clubs should make this offseason. For the Seahawks, they have Schneider shifting his attention back to the offensive line. ESPN says the Seahawks should sign veteran free-agent guard Brandon Scherff. "The interior offensive line was a major problem for the Seahawks in 2024, and while first-round rookie Grey Zabel should stabilize the left guard position, the other positions are still in flux," Aaron Schatz wrote. "Olu Oluwatimi is penciled in at center, where he was below average in both pass block win rate (92.4% versus NFL center average of 93.8%) and especially in run block win rate (64.5% versus 72.8%) last season." Schatz is correct that the interior offensive line is the Seahawks' biggest concern. First-round guard Grey Zabel is an instant starter on the left, and Olu Oluwatimi and Jalen Sundell are competing at center. Right guard appears to be an even bigger projection. "The current leader at right guard is 2024 third-round pick Christian Haynes," Schatz continued. "Why not bring in a former Pro Bowler who can provide some stability and veteran leadership? Scherff is still available and could take the right guard position, kicking Haynes over to battle Oluwatimi for the center position at training camp." Scherff would represent a big-time upgrade for the Seahawks at right guard.

In Seattle, Darnold won't have Kevin O'Connell or nearly the same caliber of an offensive cast that he had in Minnesota." recommended Get more from National Football League Follow your favorites to get information about games, news and more in this topic

Offensive line still a Seahawks 2026 NFL draft priority

The Seattle Seahawks are hoping to receive upgraded play from in-house options across their offensive line this season. Despite it being a huge weakness last year, GM John Schneider didn't go crazy in the talent acquisition department. The Seahawks didn't sign a single starting-caliber lineman in free agency, adding swing tackle Josh Jones, and the lone new instant starter will be first-round pick Grey Zabel. Instead of relying on offseason acquisitions, ascending talents like Olu Oluwatimi, Jalen Sundell, Christian Haynes, and Anthony Bradford are receiving opportunities to display improvement. Offensive line coach John Benton is being tasked with helping them get better. It's a bold, risky strategy. Pro Football Focus recently looked ahead to the 2026 NFL draft by highlighting one area every NFL team needs to think about. Unsurprisingly for the Seahawks, that's the offensive line. "Seattle's interior offensive line posted a 52.8 PFF pass-blocking grade in 2024, ranking 29th in the NFL," Trevor Sikkema acknowledged. "The team heavily invested in that area by drafting the versatile Grey Zabel in Round 1 this offseason, but the fact of the matter is that the Seahawks could have, and maybe should have, added more bodies to that group. Sikkema is also hesitant to buy into Haynes' development, or Abe Lucas' health. "Christian Haynes struggled as a rookie, earning just a 48.5 PFF overall grade on limited playing time," Sikkema added. "He needs a big bounce-back season, or else the Seahawks might be using another priority pick on an interior player next offseason. Tackle Abraham Lucas is great when healthy, but he has dealt with chronic knee issues and the team lacks depth behind him. Seattle needs to make more offensive line investments." The offensive line could be a sore-spot for the Seahawks again in 2025.

Seahawks are being slept on, according to 49ers reporter

Seahawks are being slept on, according to 49ers reporter The Seattle Seahawks have not won the NFC West since the 2020 season, as the title has been claimed by the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams over the last few seasons. In 2024, the Seahawks came the closest they have in in several years, narrowly losing out to the Rams based on a 5th tiebreaker in Week 17. Seattle is gunning for the NFC West crown, and only one reporter outside of the Emerald City seems to be taking notice. 49ers reporter Grant Cohen took to his personal Twitter account to mention he believes folks are sleeping on the Seahawks, and we cannot help but agree with him. It remains to be seen if Seattle did enough to actually improve their offensive line. Drafting NDSU's Grey Zabel in the first round should be an immediate upgrade over Laken Tomlinson, and adding a more veteran offensive coaching staff could bring more out of the guys already with the team. But the jury is more than out on if that will be enough to raise the floor for this offensive unit as a whole. Still, the Seahawks are a team that should be considered trending upwards. Of course, as we at Seahawks Wire have repeatedly said, this Seattle squad is rolling the dice on more than a few bets. The Seahawks are gambling their moves will be enough to help them get over the hump from good-to-great, but there is significant bust potential. The ceiling has been raised, but the lower got lower.

Grey Zabel threw first pitch at the Mariners game on Friday night

Part of the fun of being a first round draft pick is being paraded around as a local celebrity during the summer. Such is the case for offensive guard Grey Zabel, who was selected by the Seattle Seahawks at No. 18 overall in the 2025 NFL draft. Zabel has gone from the great plains of Fargo, ND to the Emerald City of Seattle. Safe to say his life has changed considerably in these last several weeks, as Zabel will be experiencing plenty of "firsts" in his blossoming NFL career. Next up on his "firsts" is probably throwing out the first pitch at an MLB game, which he did on Friday night. The Seattle Mariners opened the first of a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins, and the man they picked to ceremoniously kick things off (so to speak) was Grey Zabel, who threw out the first pitch. Things continued well for the Mariners after Zabel's opening pitch. Star catcher Cal Raleigh opened things up with a three-run homer in the first inning, which was followed by Randy Arozarena smashing a solo-shot 377 feet to make it a 4-0 to start. The Twins eventually cut the lead to 4-3, but Raleigh struck once again with his second dinger of the night... a 380-foot blast in the eighth to make it a 6-3 ballgame. Advertisement Unfortunately, that's where the good vibes for the M's ended. Seattle's All-Star closer, Andrés Muñoz, laid an uncharacteristic egg in the ninth. Up to this point, Muñoz had not surrendered an earned run all season long, gave up three to make it a 6-6 game. Painfully, the tying-run was scored with two outs for Minnesota. From there, the meltdown was on. Seattle's relief pitcher, Casey Legumina, gave up six runs in the top of the 10th inning and the Mariners would go on to lose 12-6. This was the second-straight game for Seattle giving up six or more runs in the tenth inning. Over the last two games, the Mariners have allowed opponents to score 16 runs in the ninth and tenth innings. Yikes. Seattle has lost seven of their last ten games, and ss a result, the Mariners have been knocked from their perch atop the AL West This article originally appeared on Seahawks Wire: Seahawks OG Grey Zabel threw the first pitch at Mariners vs Twins game
