Following a busy NFL offseason filled with trades, free-agent moves and the draft, Ben Arthur distilled each team's offseason into a word. Check out what Arthur had to say about the Seahawks: Gamble
"Sam Darnold had a resurgent 2024 with the Vikings, but there's a big risk the Seahawks are taking in the former No. 3 overall pick, who replaces Geno Smith as QB1. In Seattle, Darnold won't have Kevin O'Connell or nearly the same caliber of an offensive cast that he had in Minnesota."

Cam Newton Uses Joe Flacco to Deliver a Hard Truth to Shedeur Sanders

Cam Newton Uses Joe Flacco to Deliver a Hard Truth to Shedeur Sanders originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Auburn Tigers Heisman Trophy Award winner Cam Newton had an exceptional football career, but it did not come without its speed bumps. He began his college career with the Florida Gators, where off-the-field issues resulted in just 13 pass attempts over two years before transferring to Blinn College. Advertisement Newton grinded at the JUCO level for a season before remerging at Auburn, leading the Tigers to a national championship in his lone season and vaulting himself to the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft. Cleveland Browns quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders (left) and Joe Flacco (right)Ken Blaze-Imagn Images; Jeff Lange / USA TODAY NETWORK The dual-threat passer hit the ground running against the world's toughest competition, winning Rookie of the Year in 2011 and the MVP in 2015. Newton followed up his MVP season with a career-worst campaign but then had back-to-back respectable seasons in 2017 and 2018, followed by a Lisfranc fracture that derailed his 2019 year. Newton played two more seasons before his retirement and has since transitioned into joining the media, highlighted by his show "\4th&1 with Cam Newton." Advertisement On Thursday, Newton, as he does every week, shared his thoughts on the top stories surrounding the NFL, drawing on his experiences in both the NFL and college. Newton spoke on the dynamic that is likely to take place within the Cleveland Browns quarterback room, with the NFC North club housing veteran Super Bowl champ Joe Flacco and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. Newton believes it would be beneficial for the young quarterbacks to remain diligent in Flacco's everyday habits, including film study and workouts, rather than relying on him for mentorship. "It is nobody's job to teach you nothing. It is your job to make sure that you learn at your rate," said Newton when discussing why most young quarterbacks flameout, or at least never reach star status. Newton continued, saying, "You can't take the elevator to success… this game is manual." Advertisement Cleveland made waves this offseason, selecting the sliding Sanders in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders threw for 4,134 yards and 37 touchdowns for the Colorado Buffaloes last season while finishing eighth in Heisman voting. Some sniffer dogs at the Club World Cup outfitted with booties to protect their paws from the heat

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Fans and players weren't the only ones coping with extreme heat this week at the Club World Cup. Sniffer dogs — a common addition to the security details at many large sporting events — had a job to do at the international soccer tournament despite the sweltering temperatures. And because that job includes walking on hot asphalt, it can be tough on an animal's feet. The solution? In Philadelphia, the sniffer dogs at Lincoln Financial Field were outfitted with brightly colored protective booties as temperatures soared. 'Every dog team is different and there are different requirements; their precursors are different. However, we go by the seven-second rule. If us humans can't put our human backside or our hand on the concrete for longer than seven seconds without pulling it off, then we require dog booties to go on,' said Cody Schwartz, manager of 3DK9 Detection Services, the private company providing the K9 teams at the stadium. The company also contracts with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles. Besides wearing booties, the dogs are kept hydrated and limited to 20-minute patrols at a time in the heat. They also enjoy cooling baths in kiddie pools filled with ice. 'Obviously, when we're hot, they're 10 times hotter. They're obviously carrying a big coat of fur, so it's a big thing for us. Our dogs are No. 1. We can't do our jobs without them,' Schwartz said. Heat has been an issue throughout the Club World Cup, a tournament featuring 32 teams from around the world playing in several U.S. cities. Teams have had to cut back on practice, substitutes have watched from the locker room rather than the bench, and hydration breaks have become necessary. While the booted canines drew a lot of bemused attention, footwear for working dogs isn't all that uncommon. And it's not just for hot weather. In Portland, Maine, and other cities across the United States, police K-9 units have used booties to protect dogs' paws from the ice, sand and salt that accompany winter weather. Sniffer dogs can often be seen at work at airports and at sporting events or concerts because they can smell explosives, contraband and ammunition. Police also use sniffer dogs to help locate missing people or track suspected criminals. ___ The Associated Press' climate and environmental coverage receives financial support from multiple private foundations. Jets Predicted To Trade For $180 Million QB And Dump Justin Fields

Jets Predicted To Trade For $180 Million QB And Dump Justin Fields originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Jets just got done investing $40 million over two years to acquire Justin Fields. The Jets also just got done saying goodbye to an elderly QB in Aaron Rodgers. Advertisement But now comes the suggestion that the new regime could undo everything ... and redo everything. Fields is a young first-round talent who last year with the Pittsburgh Steelers in limited time threw for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns and one interception, while adding 289 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Oh, and he helped the Steelers win. Can he bring the same athleticism to New York? Can new coach Aaron Glenn's staff refine his work and make him a better passer? That's the plan ... though Bleacher Report has other ideas as it predicts that the Jets will trade for Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins. Advertisement B/R writes that New York "has a considerable amount of salary-cap space and could well give up on Justin Fields by November. If the increasingly desperate Jets are competitive in spite of Fields at that stage, dealing for an established veteran from the NFC could make some sense." Yeah, but ... nah. Cousins is a backup in Atlanta; they'd love to find a path to giving him away ... but his $180 million contract is an albatross. So, by the way, was his 2024 performance, as he tossed 18 touchdowns, to an NFL-worst 16 interceptions. Why would New York want to pay for that? And if the Jets are still "competitive'' before the in-season NFL trade deadline of Nov. 4? Why would they give up on Fields - the QB who likely helped get them there? Advertisement Cousins has made four Pro Bowl appearances. But like now-Steelers vet Rodgers, 41, who has four NFL MVPs to his credit? Those things happened a long time ago. And the Jets don't need to go back to that future.
