Hina Khan says working gives her ‘happiness and strength' in battle against cancer, why coping mechanisms are important to deal with trauma
In the world of glitz and glamour, where perfection often seems the norm, actor Hina Khan's revelation about her battle with stage three breast cancer shocked fans and industry peers alike. Diagnosed last year, Hina has since undergone treatment, including chemotherapy, and emerged stronger. Her openness about her journey, combined with her determination to return to work, has made her a beacon of hope for many. Hina's decision to share her journey publicly stemmed from a desire to normalise conversations about cancer. 'The reason I wanted to normalise it from the day I got to know about my diagnosis was that I knew I have to keep going and behave as normal as I can be,' she shared in an interview with Hindustan Times. Her resolve shone through as she balanced treatment with work, even participating in a ramp walk during her chemo cycles and completing small campaigns from home. 'Whatever little I could do gave me so much happiness and strength,' she reflected. View this post on Instagram A post shared by 𝑯𝒊𝒏𝒂 𝑲𝒉𝒂𝒏 (@realhinakhan) Now in recovery, Hina has resumed her professional commitments with renewed vigour. Promoting her new show, Griha Laxmi, and diving into future projects, she finds solace and strength in her routine. 'I love this routine—reading scripts, talking to my team about my wardrobe for the day, discussing who we're walking for or what designer we're working with. All of this excites me,' she said, adding, 'The only thing in this entire world which keeps me away and on my toes, and I forget what is happening in the world, is my work.' Counselling psychologist Srishti Vatsa highlights how work can play a pivotal role in regaining a sense of normalcy during challenging times. 'Finding strength in work brings not just purpose but also happiness, giving you something meaningful to focus on,' she explains. A structured day—starting with small rituals like sipping morning coffee or diving into tasks—helps create a sense of control amidst chaos. For individuals battling critical illnesses, work becomes more than a routine; it's a reminder of their resilience and capabilities. It provides a way to reconnect with normalcy and rediscover joy and purpose. 'It's about reclaiming an identity that's tied to what you love or contribute, even when life feels uncertain,' Vatsa adds.
