Library to stay shut for 'some time' after leak

Grimsby Central Library will remain closed for "some time" to allow asbestos to be removed. The building closed at short notice in March after a water leak "created a risk of asbestos disturbance". North East Lincolnshire Council said books and local history archives would be taken out of the 1960s building to allow for assessments and asbestos to be removed. It is not known when the library will reopen, with the council exploring options for a temporary facility. Councillor Hayden Dawkins, portfolio holder for culture, heritage and the visitor economy, said: "Like almost all buildings of this age, asbestos is an issue and until this is dealt with properly we cannot move forward with any plans for this building "The recent water leak and subsequent damage has accelerated essential asbestos removal works that would have always been needed." Dawkins added the council would seek to complete the work as quickly as possible. He apologised for the inconvenience caused. Library users affected by the closure are invited to use facilities in Immingham, Waltham and Cleethorpes. Water leak temporarily closes town's library

Grimsby Central Library has been forced to close temporarily after water leaked onto the premises following a period of rainfall overnight this week. North East Lincolnshire Council said an inspection revealed urgent remedial work was needed and the service would be "relocated as soon as possible". Both the authority and operator Lincs Inspire have apologised for "any inconvenience". The council was to spend £4.2m on refurbishing the library but in January, a North East Lincolnshire Council meeting revealed most of the money earmarked on the revamp had been spent on the town's Freshney Place development. People have been urged to use services at Cleethorpes Library, Immingham Library, and Waltham Library and the online facility continues to be available. Those who are due to return books have been asked to drop them off at an alternative branch until a suitable arrangement has been confirmed. Lincs Inspire is working with the Credit Union to ensure its continued service, the authority has said.
