Bihar's free electricity promise is ‘Karnataka model': DKS
Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said on Thursday that Bihar CM Nitish Kumar's promise of free electricity up to 125 units is a 'Karnataka model'. Speaking to reporters, Shivakumar claimed that in the entire country, only the Congress party has stood for the welfare of the people. 'After independence till today, whenever Congress party is in power, either in the Centre or in the state, it has given various schemes,' he said. He said it was Karnataka that started the trend with five guarantees. Congress does this for the development of the people. 'But to come to power again, they (BJP) have also used this in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Delhi and other parts of the country,' he said. The Deputy CM said whatever Congress party has given in Karnataka, the entire country is following. 'So, it is a Karnataka model to the country.' The Congress government's five guarantee schemes are —200 units of free power to all households (Gruha Jyoti), Rs 2,000 monthly assistance to the woman head of every family (Gruha Lakshmi), the additional 5 kg of rice to every member of a BPL household (Anna Bhagya), Rs 3,000 every month for unemployed graduate youth and Rs 1,500 for diploma holders for two years (Yuva Nidhi), and free travel for women in public transport buses (Shakti). In a major populist move ahead of the upcoming assembly polls, Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on Thursday announced free power up to 125 units to all domestic consumers in the state. Kumar came up with the announcement on social media, stating that the benefit will reach 1.67 crore households. He also said the free power benefit will be effective from August 1.

NDA ‘copying' Congress guarantees: Ministers
Hours after announcement of free electricity up to 125 units per month in Bihar, ahead of Assembly elections in that State by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, several Ministers in the ruling Congress in Karnataka claimed that the NDA led by the BJP has been copying 'guarantees' implemented by the Congress in the State. Speaking to reporters, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, Ministers Santosh Lad, K.J. George, and Laxmi Hebbalkar said that the BJP had been criticising five 'guarantees' implemented by the Congress here, but copying the same for luring voters in the coming Assembly in Bihar. Mr. George said the BJP had exposed itself by implementing the Congress guarantee in Bihar and other States. 'Why is the BJP adopting double standards when it comes to guarantees?' he asked. The State government has been implementing the 'Gruha Jyoti' scheme which exempted households from paying for electricity up to 200 units in a month.

Telangana Dy CM directs power officials to chart long-term energy plan
Hyderabad, June 27 (UNI) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu emphasised the urgent need to prepare a comprehensive long-term electricity generation plan for Telangana, aligned with projected demand over the next two decades. Chairing a high-level review meeting with senior officials from the power department and directors of GENCO at Praja Bhavan on Friday evening, the Deputy CM instructed officials to prioritise planning based on anticipated peak demands, including the 17,162 MW demand already recorded in March 2025. He called for future-ready strategies to address the growing power needs of upcoming projects such as Future City, Musi River revitalisation, expanding industries, agriculture, and changing lifestyles. Highlighting the state's commitment to welfare schemes, he pointed out that Telangana currently provides 24x7 free power to around 30 lakh agricultural pump sets, incurring an annual cost of Rs 12,500 crore, and free power up to 200 units for the poor, with an annual burden of nearly Rs 2,000 crore—likely to rise to Rs 3,000 crore soon. To meet these growing financial and supply demands, the Deputy CM directed officials to scale up green energy initiatives, particularly solar power. He stressed the swift implementation of the Indira Saura Giri Jal Vikasam scheme, aimed at bringing 6.7 lakh acres of tribal land under cultivation using solar pump sets. Regarding thermal energy, the Deputy CM urged officials to prepare plans for new thermal power stations in place of ageing facilities such as the Ramagundam and Kothagudem Thermal Power Stations, each with potential capacities of 800 MW. He noted the availability of 500 acres of land and coal resources in Kothagudem and emphasised the importance of modernising Telangana's thermal power infrastructure under GENCO's leadership. Underscoring the importance of Telangana REDCO (Renewable Energy Development Corporation), Bhatti Vikramarka stated that it should become a national model in clean energy, assuring the government's full support in terms of manpower and resources. He also instructed directors to operate with autonomy and innovation while aligning with the government's vision for sustainable power development. The Deputy CM called for daily reviews of electricity agreements signed with Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan and directed the installation of solar panels on homes built under the Gruha Jyoti and Indiramma housing schemes to promote household-level energy generation. He also announced the formation of a joint coordination team between the Irrigation Department and GENCO to explore opportunities for floating solar power generation. The meeting was attended by Power Department Principal Secretary Naveen Mittal, TRANSCO CMD D Krishna Bhaskar, GENCO CMD Harish, REDCO VCMD Anila, and other key officials, an official statement said.

₹2,795 crore spent on guarantee schemes in Dharwad district, says S.R. Patil
Vice-President of the State Level Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authority S.R. Patil has said that delivering government schemes to the people should be the top priority for all departments and it should also be ensured that the beneficiaries are treated with courtesy. Chairing a review meeting in Dharwad on Wednesday, Mr. Patil said that the five guarantee schemes have received commendation from global institutions and in Dharwad district, ₹2,795 crore has been spent under the schemes for the benefit of the people. Mr. Patil said that the schemes have helped women, the poor and the marginalised people in leading a life of self-respect and independence. Pointing out at the increased number of passengers under the Shakti scheme in Dharwad district, he said that more buses are required for the district. Mr. Patil said that proper nameplates should be installed at fair price shops implementing the Anna Bhagya scheme. He also asked the authorities to immediately address the technical issues that have resulted in IT/GST data mismatch of beneficiaries under the Gruha Lakshmi scheme. He said that under the Shakti scheme women have so far availed of free 24.32 crore rides. Post-launch of the scheme, the number of buses being operated has increased to 1,034 from 949, he said. Mentioning that there are 3,59,168 beneficiaries under Anna Bhagya scheme in the district, he emphasised the need for vigilance over fair price shops to prevent corrupt practices. Mr. Patil said a total of ₹2,795.44 crore has been spent for the guarantee schemes. The break-up is as follows: ₹519.57 crore under Shakti, ₹474.16 crore under Gruha Jyoti, ₹358.29 crore under Anna Bhagya, ₹1,432.66 crore under Gruha Lakshmi and ₹10.76 crore under Yuva Nidhi meant for unemployed youths. Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Bhuvanesh Patil and others were present.

Telangana Dy CM Bhatti Vikramarka launches development projects in Bhupalapally
Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka visited Bhupalapally district alongside Industries Minister Sridhar Babu to launch several development projects. During his visit, he emphasised the importance of local solutions for community problems, stating that those facing issues should not need to travel to the capital for assistance. Vikramarka addressed concerns about electricity supply, stating, 'Previous rulers perpetuated the myth that there would be no electricity if Congress came to power. This March, the peak demand for electricity reached 17,162 megawatts, yet we managed to provide uninterrupted service. I extend my gratitude to the officers and staff who contributed to maintaining this essential supply.' He highlighted the government's efforts to provide free electricity to 29 lakh pump sets, allocating ₹11,500 crore for agricultural power supply. Furthermore, he announced that households classified as poor receive up to 200 units of free electricity under the Gruha Jyoti scheme, with over ₹13,000 crore being spent annually on this initiative and for government educational institutions. Additionally, Vikramarka noted that they are offering farmer assurance in the accounts of approximately 1 crore 49 lakh 35 thousand farmers, reiterating the commitment to supporting the agricultural community in the region.
