MCC-Murugappa Hockey Gold Cup: Railways blank TN 6-0, IOC beat Malaysia
CHENNAI: INDIAN Oil Corporation secured their third win of the tournament when they defeated Malaysia Junior National in a Pool B match in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Tuesday. After a goalless first half, Gurjinder Singh scored in the 33rd minute for Indian Oil. Sumit Kumar doubled the lead in the 58th minute. The Malaysia Junior National team showed flashes of promise but struggled to convert opportunities against a well-organised IOCL defence. In the second match of the day, Railways delivered a commanding performance defeating Tamil Nadu 6-0 in a one-sided encounter. Gursahibjit Singh and Pankaj Rawat each struck twice as RSPB overwhelmed their southern rivals. MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup
Perhaps for the first time in the MCC-Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament, Hockey Unit of Tamil Nadu (HUTN) sensed that it could enter the knock-outs. Starting with a draw against Maharashtra, the team then recorded a huge win over Indian Army in its second match, followed by a thrilling draw with SAI-NCOE (Bhopal) giving the belief that the host might make it to the semifinals. But defending champion Indian Railways did it no favour, posting a 6-0 thrashing here on Tuesday to maintain an all-win record. In Pool-B, Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) put it across Malaysian National junior team 2-0 through goals from Gurjinder Singh and Sumit Kumar, both coming off penalty corners. Malaysia is out of contention along with Central Board of Direct Taxes from the pool. With five points and a goal difference of -2 from its four matches, Tamil Nadu's chances of making the last four depend on how the other two teams in contention fare, NCoE (four points from three matches) and Army (three from three), in their last group matches. Two goals each from former International Gursahibjit Singh and Pankaj Rawat ensured Railways complete the rout. But it was Gursahibjit who was instrumental in the champion team's triumph. Railways opened the account towards the end of first quarter. A poor aerial pass from Tamil Nadu defender G.M. Pruthvi found striker Darshan Gawkar, who passed it to Gursahib, who in turn, hoodwinked two defenders and slammed a backhander home. Pankaj doubled the lead through a scorching grounder off a penalty corner. The third goal for Railways resulted from a defensive lapse on part of the host. Patras Tirkey's pass was intercepted by Gursahibjit who did the rest. Railways scored three quick goals in the fourth quarter. The results: Pool A: Indian Railways 6 (Gursahibjit Singh 15, 34, Pankaj Rawat 30, 48, Simranjot Singh 52, Shivam Anand 54) bt HUTN 0. B: IOC 2 (Gurjinder Singh 33, Sumit Kumar 58) bt Malaysian National junior team 0.

Ludhiana policeman held for murder after missing man's body recovered from canal
The police in Punjab's Ludhiana Thursday arrested an assistant sub-inspector (ASI), posted at Kailash Chowk Police Post in the city, for allegedly murdering a 42-year-old man with his licensed revolver more than a month ago. While ASI Bua Singh was arrested, two of his accomplices are still absconding, said the police. The victim, Gurjinder Singh alias Gora, had been missing for nearly 40 days. His family came to know about the murder Wednesday after the Morinda police in the state's Ropar district identified the photograph of the victim. The Morinda police claimed that they had recovered the body from a canal and also cremated it after no one claimed the body. Amritpal Singh, Station House Officer, Moti Nagar police station, said the police arrested ASI Singh, and lodged a murder case against him. The police also booked two of his accomplices. SHO Singh added that according to the victim's relatives, the ASI, along with two others, had picked Gurjinder Singh from his house on the pretext of enjoying a drink on April 16. They said all of them knew each other and were friends. His family claimed that Gurjinder Singh did not return home. After his family lodged a complaint, the Moti Nagar police lodged a First Information Report (FIR) on April 21 against unidentified accused. 'We circulated the pictures of Gurjinder Singh in the surrounding districts. Meanwhile, the Morinda police confirmed that the body of the man was fished out from the canal,' said SHO Singh. 'Following the complaint of the kin of the victim, the police arrested ASI Bua Singh. Prima facie, the bullet that killed Gurjinder Singh was fired from the licensed revolver of Bua Singh, and the car used in the crime also belonged to the ASI,' he said. He added that the reason behind the murder is yet to be ascertained.
