Brahmaputra riverfront project nears completion
1 2 3 Guwahati: Modelled on the Sabarmati Riverfront in Ahmedabad, the Brahmaputra riverfront development project, which is expected to bring a major change to life in the city, is nearing completion. A portion of the 1.2-km-long project along the south bank of the Brahmaputra was inaugurated by the Union home minister last year, and the remaining portion is likely to be opened to the public very soon. CM Himanta Biswa Sarma recently took to X and wrote, "Something very special is coming up in Guwahati which will change the way people experience living in the city." He also shared a video of the riverfront project. Led by Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL), the project covers a 1.2 km stretch from the DC Bungalow to Kacharighat. It is part of a larger six-kilometre vision, extending from Raj Bhawan to the Kamakhya temple. Union home minister Amit Shah inaugurated the Panbazar segment on Jan 20, 2024, which includes the Mahabahu Brahmaputra Heritage Centre and Padum Pukhuri pond. Developed at an estimated cost of Rs 69.85 crore, the project blends urban development with ecological restoration. Features like water lily revival, gabion terraces for groundwater recharge, native vegetation, and riparian landscaping aim to promote a sustainable design. The project aims to integrate promenades, cultural hubs, and ferry services, potentially redefining Guwahati's relationship with its iconic river. Seven ceremonial "state gates" enhance the cultural identity of the space. Infrastructure such as food kiosks, restrooms, CCTV surveillance, PA systems, and parking facilities add to the visitor experience. It is pertinent to mention that the project faced opposition over environmental concerns in 2023. The felling of around 40 mature trees in Uzanbazar drew criticism from locals and environmentalists. Officials have since assured compensatory afforestation and the adoption of eco-sensitive construction methods. City's CCTV surveillance project nears halfway mark
1 2 3 4 5 6 Guwahati: About 45% of the city-wide CCTV surveillance project has been completed, officials from Guwahati Smart City Limited (GSCL) have said. The project aims to install 2,000 cameras across Guwahati to enhance public safety and improve traffic monitoring, with an estimated budget of Rs 220 crore. The decision to implement the surveillance system was taken two years ago during a police review meeting chaired by chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. "Currently, 100 CCTV cameras are operational, and cantilever poles measuring 5 to 6 metres have been installed at 650 locations, spanning areas such as Chandrapur, Khanapara, and Maligaon. Surveys for the remaining cameras have been completed at over 800 sites, with assistance from the city police. We aim to complete the project by Sept this year," said Rahul Choudhary, chief project manager of GSCL. Officials said the site survey for the integrated command and control centre (ICCC), which will manage the surveillance system, has been completed. The centre is expected to be established at the commissioner of police's office in Khanapara. While installation has progressed steadily, officials said challenges such as overhead low-tension electricity lines operated by Assam Power Distribution Corporation Limited, which have hindered pole erection. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Additionally, excavation work has been slowed by existing water supply pipelines managed by Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) and Guwahati Jal Board (GJB). "We are coordinating with the respective departments to secure their support. Since most of the work is conducted at night, we obtain the necessary permissions in advance. APDCL has also agreed to temporarily shift wires when required," Choudhary added. The surveillance system features both bullet cameras, which are designed for fixed-location monitoring, and Pan-Tilt-Zoom (PTZ) cameras, suitable for wide-area coverage at traffic junctions and public spaces. "Equipped with artificial intelligence technology, PTZ cameras have a focusing range of approximately 400 to 500 metres, while bullet cameras are effective within 13 to 14 metres," the officer said. To ensure reliability, the cameras will be connected via underground power over ethernet cables, which provide both power and data through a single fibre-optic line. Each installation site will include a junction box housing a network switch, fibre junction switch, and an uninterruptible power supply unit for backup during outages.
