Tuskegee tops Morehouse 68-55 in HBCU Classic

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Kusame Draper had 22 points and 15 rebounds to help Tuskegee University beat Morehouse College 68-55 in the HBCU Classic on Saturday. Kevin Sesberry added 19 points and two steals as the Golden Tigers (11-12, 9-8 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference) ended a three-game losing streak and held on to win in the match-up between the two Division II teams in the annual event that is a part of NBA All-Star Weekend. Amahn Decker had 10 points and eight rebounds for Morehouse. The Maroon Tigers (13-11, 10-6) had won four of their previous five. The game was played at the Oakland Arena, former home to the Golden State Warriors, about a 20-minute drive from the team's current home at Chase Center in San Francisco. The mood was festive all afternoon, with the crowd repeatedly breaking out into soulful singing and dancing. The son of Martin Luther King Jr. was among those in attendance cheering, singing and shown on the big scoreboard above the court. The late civil rights activist attended Morehouse. Famed director Spike Lee sat neat the Morehouse bench. Riding a three-game losing streak going into the game, Tuskegee overcame a sluggish start and led most of the first half despite missing 15 of its first 21 shots. Sesberry paced the Airmen with 12 points, and Draper had four points as part of 9-0 run to end the first half, putting Tuskegee ahead 30-22 at the break. The Golden Tigers led by 14 in the second half before coasting to the victory. Morehouse did a great job getting to the line but couldn't capitalize, missing 13 of its 21 attempts from the stripe. ___

HBCU Classic at NBA All-Star Weekend highlights talent and diversity

The NBA's HBCU Classic at this year's All-Star Weekend provides a global stage for student-athletes from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) to showcase their talent and culture. As Morehouse College prepared to take on Tuskegee University Friday, the NBA reaffirmed its commitment to diversity and inclusion by continuing the tradition of the All-Star HBCU Classic, now in its fourth year. Before the game, the teams gathered for a pre-celebration event at San Francisco's Foot Locker. Morehouse Head Coach Douglass Whittler expressed his excitement for the opportunity, calling it a "once in a lifetime" moment for his players. "We're just really ecstatic for us to program these young men to get this opportunity to come out here and play on this stage," said Whittler. "It's a once in a lifetime opportunity, and we are just very excited we were chosen for it." The event allows HBCU athletes to compete on a global platform, showing the world what they can achieve. Coach Whittler emphasized that the experience goes beyond the game itself. "This just gives us an opportunity to show what HBCU athletes can really come out and accomplish," he said. "They will find out that from the previous three, and this one as well, that we are just as good as the PWIs and some of the other bigger schools out there in the nation." In a time when diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts have faced significant challenges, the NBA's commitment to uplifting diverse communities remains steadfast. "It is important for us to make an investment in this space. Give them the opportunity to shine, and showcase their talents. Most importantly though, give them the opportunity to have hands-on experience with such an amazing event like All-Star," said Chief DEI Officer for the NBA Lesley Slaton Brown. Ultimately, the goal is to create an unforgettable experience for student-athletes, one that extends far beyond the court. For Whittler, being in the Bay Area with his team is a moment to cherish. "I'm enjoying the city like I always have before, and I'm just really looking forward to playing this game," Whittler said. The HBCU Classic continues to be a celebration of athleticism, culture, and community, offering a platform for HBCU athletes to shine for all to see.

NBA All-Star weekend prompts Oakland to clean up problem areas

With the NBA All-Star weekend just a few days away, the cities of San Francisco and Oakland are getting ready for the festivities. In Oakland, the city has been working with community groups to clean up the Hegenberger corridor near the Coliseum, plus the Oakland Police Department is stepping up security in the area. Driving along the Hegenberger corridor in East Oakland near the Coliseum, it's obvious there is an effort underway to put the city's best foot forward. "When I am driving, I do see that the streets are kind of clearer, even with the, they had a whole bunch of trailers and stuff like that, like I can see that they are making a difference," said Michelle Beacham. She was born and raised in Oakland and still lives in the east part of town. She also works at an office only a few blocks from the Coliseum. She said she's frustrated it took the NBA All-Star weekend for the city to address some of the issues residents have been complaining about for years. "You guys want to clean it up because people are coming here now for an event to bring money, but what about us, the people who live here every single day? Those people are going to be here for the weekend then go home while we're stuck with it. It's going to go back to how it was," she said. The city, along with community partners like AASEG, the ownership group trying to buy the Coliseum property, as well as PG&E and some local motorcycle clubs have organized clean-ups to pick up trash in the area. The city has also fixed dozens of broken streetlights in the area and the Oakland Police Department will have a greater presence in the area. "That is one of the strategies we want to put in place is to have enough officers out there so people not only feel safe, but they see the presence of law enforcement and know they can't come in and commit frivolous crime in the city throughout these events," said Deputy Chief Casey Johnson of OPD. Oakland Police along with the Alameda County Sheriffs, BART PD and CHP will have additional staff in the Coliseum area as well as downtown as well as areas historically known for sideshow gatherings. "There will be traffic enforcement in areas where we see bad actors. People, we're not going to be specific for sideshows, but we will be specific for people who are speeding or running stop signs or engaging in a sideshow," said Assistant Chief James Beere. Residents like Michelle say they just wish this kind of engagement could happen year-round and not just during special events. "People are scared to come here, like Oakland has such a bad reputation now and we are such a beautiful city and it's just unfortunate," she said. Community groups are hosting another cleanup session along the corridor Thursday morning from 9 to noon ahead of the celebrity game on Friday, and the HBCU Classic on Saturday.

Sixers Stixers drumline performing at 2025 NBA All-Star weekend

One of Philadelphia's most recognizable drumlines is heading west to San Francisco, California for the 2025 NBA All-Star weekend. The 76ers' official drumline the Sixers Stixers will represent Philadelphia at the three-day event, which draws some of basketball's biggest stars and celebrity fans. Speaking from Philadelphia International Airport, director Antoine Mapp said being invited to perform during All-Star Weekend is a career highlight. "We are a community drill team first. To be the community drill team, this is not common. This is monumental to be around the biggest stars in the world, " Mapp said. Mapp, along with his crew, unloaded their equipment around 4 a.m. Tuesday, just in time time to catch their flight to headed to the West Coast. The group said once they land, they'll head right to practice. "I'm ecstatic," said band member Anthony Lynch, who's excited for his first trip to the City by the Bay. "Never been out there. First time, the opportunity to do something that's never been done in the All-Star games," Lynch said. This weekend's festivities take place inside the Bay Area's Chase Center, home of the Golden State Warriors. The band will perform at the HBCU Classic, Saturday's All-Star game and Sunday's celebrity game. While the drum squad usually performs with the West Powelton Steppers, the group traveling to California is a bit smaller than usual. But they're still prepared to rock the crowd in a big way. Johnny Hall, one of the Sixers Stixers' original members, has been playing with the prominent drumline for 34 years. "We've been trying to get there our second and third season, and we finally get to go," Hall said. The Sixers Stixers will miss Friday's Eagles Super Bowl parade, but said they're excited to bring Brotherly Love to the Bay Area.
