Be vigilant, district minister tells officers
Mysuru: Mysuru district minister HC Mahadevappa on Wednesday directed officials to respond promptly to any damage caused by rainfall. At the district-level meeting at the Jaladarshini Guest House, the minister emphasised the need for precautionary measures as the monsoon started earlier than expected. After receiving updates on the water levels and inflow to the reservoirs, Mahadevappa said six animals were affected in Nanjangud taluk due to rain, and relief should be provided to their owners. Additionally, 146 electricity poles that were damaged need repairs. Measures should be taken to prevent rainwater from entering water tanks and wells during heavy rainfall, ensuring that drinking water remains uncontaminated. With more rain anticipated in the district, agricultural activities are intensifying. He instructed that farmers preparing for sowing should not face any issues and that adequate seeds and fertilisers should be distributed properly. With regard to incidents of disrespect towards national leader BR Ambedkar's portraits in Vajamangala, Sindhuvalli, and Hullahalli, Mahadevappa said such incidents should not occur, and police should remain vigilant. People should be made aware to honour such great leaders, he stated. As the district reported a few Covid cases, people should follow necessary precautions. If symptoms persist, they should get tested at the nearest hospital and receive appropriate treatment, he advised. The meeting was attended by DC G Lakshmikanth Reddy and police commissioner Seema Latkar.

Dasara executive panel delays in presenting expenditure report
Mysuru: Even seven months after the conclusion of the Dasara festival, the Dasara Executive Committee has failed to present the Dasara expenditure details, raising questions among the public. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now According to Mysureans, for the first time, the district administration is taking such a long time to release the details. The Dasara festival was held between Oct 3 and 12, 2024. Following good rainfall in the 2024 monsoon season, state govt announced a grand celebration. The state govt allotted Rs 40 crore for this annual celebration. The district administration also roped in several corporate companies, besides charging the entry fee for Yuva Dasara. Now, even though preparations for the next Dasara have started, the Dasara Executive Committee is yet to share the details. Even though the district minister HC Mahadevappa, who heads the panel, assured the release of the Dasara expenditure details at the earliest, it is still not released. City residents are alleging that this delay has raised several suspicions. "All these years, at least for eye wash, the expenses details were released in a month or two. But this year, the Dasara Executive Committee failed to adhere to the custom. It is strange that the district administration is taking such a long time to release the details," alleges Prabhat S Sulvekar, a city resident. According to BJP MLC AH Vishwanath, it is impossible to force the govt to release the details. "They are saying they will not release it. What can we do?" he questioned. KPCC spokesperson M Lakshmana said he has no idea why the executive committee has not released the expenses details. "I am also demanding the district administration to release the expenses details at the earliest. It will solve all the doubts," he said.

SSLC pass percentage dips at govt-run boarding schools in Mys dist
Mysuru: In the home district of chief minister Siddaramaiah and social welfare minister HC Mahadevappa, the govt-run residential schools offering free education to pupils from poor families have seen poor performance in SSLC exams this year There are 35 govt-run residential schools in Mysuru district, including 23 run by the social welfare department, in association with Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KRIES). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Out of 1,408 students who appeared for SSLC exams, 1,195 students have passed. This translates into an overall pass percentage of 84.09% -- well below last year's figures of 98.43%. Even though the department initiated various remedial measures to improve SSLC results, such as conducting special classes for slow learners, holding monthly and weekly tests, organising coaching classes by subject experts to name a few, the efforts did not yield the desired results. Although 211 students have scored a distinction, the overall pass percentage remains a dampener for all concerned. Here are some worrying stats: Only seven out of 26 students passed from B R Ambedkar Residential School in Nanjangud taluk, 21 out of 31 students passed in Hanagodu of Hunsur taluk, and 14 out of 31 students cleared SSLC in Ravandur, Periyapatna taluk. The silver lining is that a few govt-run residential schools have secured a 100% success rate this year. Kittur Rani Chennamma residential schools in Hura village of Nanjangud taluk, Indira Gandhi residential school for girls in K R Nagar, B R Ambedkar residential school in Doddakavalande, Nanjangud, and B R Ambedkar residential school in Yelawal, Mysuru taluk, saw all their students clearing the SSLC exams. The govt-run backward classes pre-matric hostels registered 80.26% pass percentage across the district, compared to 90% last year. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to TOI, Raghavendra, the district backward classes officer, said even though the govt arranged special tuition classes for SSLC students, especially in Maths, Science, and English, some students still failed. "We also conducted weekly tests and focused on poor-performing students," he added.

Mysuru civic body's B-khata drive to bring unauthorised properties under tax net
MYSURU : Since launching a B-khata issuance drive in mid-March, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) issued 2,349 B-khatas to unauthorised property owners. The civic body aims to bring all 27,616 such properties under the tax net over the next 16 months. This effort is expected to boost property tax revenue. As state govt has already given clear-cut directions to all urban municipal bodies and owners of unauthorised properties in urban areas outside Bengaluru to secure B-khata, a temporary registration for properties that are not yet fully authorised, MCC has intensified the drive within its limits in the city. The drive, launched by district minister HC Mahadevappa in the first week of March, received an overwhelming response from property owners in the city. Earlier, state govt set a three-month deadline for the regularisation of unauthorised properties like B-khatas by the second week of May. As the progress was slow, state govt extended this deadline by another 16 months. MCC has now received a good response from all its nine zones. MCC identified 27,616 B-khata properties during the survey, in addition to 182,167 A-khatas. It issued 2,349 B-khatas after the launch of the drive in the first week of March. MCC also issued 38,584 A-khatas in authorised layouts out of a total of 182,167 properties by the end of April. As complaints about the role of middlemen and brokers poured in during the khata registration drive, MCC installed CCTV cameras in all its nine zonal offices and stepped up its vigilance to eliminate the role of brokers and middlemen in the process. MCC deputy commissioner (revenue) GS Somashekhar said that the department also replaced officers to facilitate easy registration of A-khatas and B-khatas in all its nine zonal limits. The staff are also visiting door-to-door to verify documents before issuing khatas, he said. MCC commissioner Syed Tanveer Asif said that he is regularly verifying the progress of the issuance of A-khatas and B-khatas achieved by its staff on all working days in all nine zonal offices. He is also verifying the causes of pending cases of people registered online for khata registration. MCC has installed enough computers, xerox machines, and printers to facilitate easy registration of khatas in all its zonal offices, he said. Former mayor M Shivakumar wants govt to relax the rules of demanding property registration copies in revenue layouts in B-khata issuance drive. MCC officials must facilitate the B-khata drive by simplifying the registration process by collecting at least one document, such as proof of payment over the past five years, he said. He said Mysuru city has over 40,000 properties in revenue layouts. Bringing them under the tax net helps both the city civic body and govt in generating revenue, as well as allowing residents of these properties to receive certified temporary property documents from govt.
