SC caste survey report to be discussed at Special Cabinet meet in Karnataka on August 16
'The Commission has surveyed 92 per cent of the people of 101 SC communities. Copies of the report have been distributed to all the members of the Cabinet. Everyone will come to the special cabinet meeting after reading the report and participate in the discussion', said Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil.
The ministers hailing from different SC communities, including Social Welfare Minister Dr HC Mahadevappa, Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara, Food and Civil Supplies Minister KH Muniyappa, Excise Minister RB Thimmapur, RDPR Minister Priyank Kharge and Backward Classes Development minister Shivaraj Tangadagi did not speak much about the report, according to sources.
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah suggested the ministers to go through the report and come back for a positive debate in the special Cabinet.
The Congress government is seemingly under tremendous pressure with the leadership of SC Left community, which fought for internal reservation for over three decades, urging for the early implementation of the recommendations of the Commission as it was a year ago the Supreme Court, on Aug.1, 2024, pronounced that the states are constitutionally empowered to classify the SC quota.
However the Bhovi and Lambani communities' leadership want the CM not to hurry. The government has to take a decision as it cannot go ahead with recruitment without implementing sub-classification of the SC quota.
The Commission has classified the 101 castes into A,B,C,D, E categories and allotted 1, 6, 5, 4 and 1 per cent each.
The SC Left aka Madiga caste has emerged as the largest with a population of 36,69,246 (34.91%) and the Commission has recommended a 6 per cent quota out of the 17 per cent SC quota under Category B.

1 2 3 4 Madurai: A black flag was hoisted at St Mary's Cathedral here on Sunday as part of a protest demanding the inclusion of dalit Christians in the Scheduled Castes (SC) list. The demonstration was led by Archbishop of Madurai Antonysamy Savarimuthu and Bishop Jeyasingh Prince Prabhakar. Addressing reporters, Archbishop Savarimuthu said the demand was not for any special favour but for rightful entitlements. "This is not a protest of dalit Christians or Christians alone; it is not a minority protest. Every citizen must get their rights," he said. He noted that dalit Sikhs and Buddhists were included in the SC list after protests, but dalit Christians have been denied the same for 75 years on religious grounds. The protest was joined by Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi's Ellalan, Madurai South MLA Boominathan, Untouchability Eradication Front Madurai district president Balasubramanian, Tamil Nadu Women's Movement representative Arokia Mary, and Dalit rights NGO Evidence director Kathir. Dasara elephants receive grand welcome at Palace
1 2 Mysuru: The first batch of nine Dasara elephants, led by the majestic howdah elephant Abhimanyu, was accorded a grand welcome by district minister HC Mahadevappa at the Jayamarthanda Gate of Mysuru Palace on Sunday. To mark the occasion, the palace illumination began at 6.50pm— ten minutes earlier than the usual 7pm schedule—casting a golden glow over the celebrations. The elephants, which were housed at Aranya Bhavan since Aug 4 after the ceremonial Gajapayana at Veeranahosahalli, began their journey at 3.30 pm. They reached the palace premises by 5.30 pm, but awaited the formal entry until 6.45 pm, when they received a traditional welcome. Quashing opposition claims, minister Mahadevappa said, "Not only this Dasara, but the next three Dasara editions will be inaugurated by CM Siddaramaiah ." He announced that over Rs 45 crore will be spent this year—up from Rs 40 crore last year—to ensure a more spectacular celebration. Online ticket sales will begin three to four weeks in advance, and the palace will remain illuminated for 21 days. CESC has been instructed to enhance the grandeur of the lighting, he said. Amid the celebrations, a gaffe by the Mysuru Palace Board amused visitors. Dalit Christians seek SC/ST status
'Though the Indian Constitution is highly revered by the people across the globe, the principles enshrined in that should be fully implemented,' said Archbishop of Madurai Archdiocese Antonysamy Savarimuthu. He spoke at a protest organised by Dalit Christians demanding inclusion in Scheduled Castes list here on Sunday. Mr. Savarimuthu said August 10 of every year was observed as a black day for Dalit Christians as their demand to bring them under SC list was yet to be fulfilled. 'It is not just the protest staged by Christians, Muslims or minorities, but by those who believe in the Indian Constitution,' he added. While the reservation was expanded to include Sikhs and Buddhists in 1956 and 1990 respectively, it had not included the minorities, he noted. 'The demand has been on since the 1950s. What is our birth right – the status of SC/ST – cannot be taken away from us just because we have converted to Christianity,' he said.
