Mysuru: The first batch of nine Dasara elephants, led by the majestic howdah elephant Abhimanyu, was accorded a grand welcome by district minister HC Mahadevappa at the Jayamarthanda Gate of Mysuru Palace on Sunday.
To mark the occasion, the palace illumination began at 6.50pm— ten minutes earlier than the usual 7pm schedule—casting a golden glow over the celebrations.
The elephants, which were housed at Aranya Bhavan since Aug 4 after the ceremonial Gajapayana at Veeranahosahalli, began their journey at 3.30 pm. They reached the palace premises by 5.30 pm, but awaited the formal entry until 6.45 pm, when they received a traditional welcome.
Quashing opposition claims, minister Mahadevappa said, "Not only this Dasara, but the next three Dasara editions will be inaugurated by
CM Siddaramaiah
." He announced that over Rs 45 crore will be spent this year—up from Rs 40 crore last year—to ensure a more spectacular celebration. Online ticket sales will begin three to four weeks in advance, and the palace will remain illuminated for 21 days. CESC has been instructed to enhance the grandeur of the lighting, he said.
Amid the celebrations, a gaffe by the Mysuru Palace Board amused visitors. A large welcome banner displayed photos of elephants Gopi, Rohith, and Varalakshmi—none of whom were part of Sunday's procession—while omitting actual participants Kaveri, Mahendra, and Prashantha.

HYDRAA a great system to protect Hyderabad: CM Revanth Reddy

Hyderabad: Terming HYDRAA a great system to protect Hyderabad by taking action against encroachments on water bodies and parks, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Friday accused the Opposition parties of trying to derive political mileage by showing the body in poor light. The Chief Minister stated that the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) protected government lands worth Rs.30,000 crore and freed 13 park and 20 lakes from encroachments. Speaking at the main official function at historic Golconda Fort to mark the 79th Independence Day, Chief Minister Reddy remarked that leaders who want Hyderabad to remain water poor and struggle during heavy rains, were opposing HYDRAA. 'HYDRAA is doing wonderful service in resolving traffic problems and diverting flood water within an hour or two during heavy rains. It is also working effectively in taking action against illegal constructions and restoring ponds,' he said CM Reddy said HYDRAA was constituted to make Hyderabad a safe destination for living and to curb encroachment of water bodies. Stating that cities like Bengaluru, Mumbai and Chennai are facing flood problems, he said Hyderabad should not witness such a plight. CM Reddy mentioned that 'TelanganaRising – 2047' vision document promises a permanent solution to Hyderabad's flooding problem with the Musi Rejuvenation Project. This vision unveils the determination to transform Hyderabad, which is being affected by floods, into a clean and beautiful city. The document also reveals how India's Future City, built to international standards, will be a gateway to the modern world, he said. 'TelanganaRising – 2047 is a plan to radically transform the image of Telangana with the construction of the Gandhi Sarovar project at Bapu Ghat, greenfield highways, dry ports, second phase Metro Rail, radial roads between the Outer and Regional Ring Roads, Warangal and Adilabad airports, Hyderabad-Nagpur, Hyderabad-Bengaluru, and Hyderabad-Vijayawada industrial corridors. Our goal is to implement this resolution and make Telangana a key player in the country's progress by 2047,' he said. The vision document aims to transform Telangana into a $1 trillion economy by 2035 and a $3 trillion economy by 2047. He stated that the previous BRS government left mounting debts and arrears of Rs 8,21,652 crore. "After the Congress government assumed power, we completed debt service of Rs 2,20,676 crore which included Rs 1,32,498 crore principal amount and Rs 88,178 crore interest amount till date,' he said. Terming Young India Skill University and Young India Sports University as his two eyes, CM Reddy predicted that these institutions will shape the future of Telangana. The government is determined to make Telangana the sports hub of the country. It unveiled a new sports policy with the aim of producing top sportsmen and winning gold medals in the next Olympics. The state government decided to establish 'Young India Physical Education and Sports University of Telangana (YIPESU)'. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed with the Korean National Sports University for the management of this varsity. CM Reddy said that the government is also setting up Young India Schools and a university for the development of education and skills. Young India Schools are being established in every constituency in 25 acres of land. He believes that these institutions will be game changers in the education sector of India. Already, 78 schools are being constructed at a cost of Rs 15,600 crore. 'My People's Government adapted a two-pronged approach. On one hand, the government set the goals to compete with global cities and on the other hand, we are delivering welfare benefits to fulfil the aspirations of the poor. Clarity in thinking and transparency in implementation are the hallmarks of our governance. We have chosen an inclusive development approach which involved everyone and created miracles. We have developed Telangana as a role model for the country within 20 months, writing a new history of transparency in governance, modernity in development, and welfare,' CM Reddy added.

Arunachal to fast-track all green energy projects: Khandu

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday said that the state is on a decade-long mission to fast-track all green energy projects, revive stalled ones, and embrace public-private partnerships. In his Independence Day speech at IG Park here, Khandu said that as the state is advancing towards 'viksit (developed) Arunachal' by 2024, the year marking 100 years of India's independence, people have to look for green energy. "With unmatched natural potential, Arunachal is becoming India's green energy powerhouse. Our hydropower and critical mineral resources like graphite, limestone, dolomite will power solar panels, batteries, and electric mobility for decades to come," he said. The CM said big projects like the 2,000 MW Subansiri Lower Project will be ready by May 2026 and the 2,880 Mw Dibang Multipurpose Project is on track for completion by February 2032. The Arunachal government has already declared 2025-35 as the Decade of Hydropower. "In the next 3 years alone, we will kick off work on new hydropower projects worth Rs 2 lakh crore, adding another 19 GW of capacity," Khandu said. He said these projects are not just about energy; they are about empowerment. The projects will bring in over Rs 4,000 crore annually as free power to the state and Rs 750 crore to support local area development. Every year, nearly Rs 2,000 crore in dividends will flow directly to our state. In addition to better roads, schools, etc, it will generate 30,000 direct jobs in construction and operations. On the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), which has faced stiff opposition from the Adi community, the chief minister said the government is aware of the strategic significance of the project- both India's water and national security. "The government is also mindful and appreciative of the concerns that have been raised by some of our Adi brothers and sisters. We have been holding detailed consultations with people of all the likely affected areas to allay these concerns," he said. Thanking the people of Riga and Riew villages in Siang district for signing the MoU for support of the pre-feasibility report of the SUMP, Khandu said, "I assure the people of the Siang region that the government remains committed to holding detailed consultations in future as well." He said Arunachal has already secured issuance of 16,326 carbon credits in 2023-24 due to its immense hydropower potential. Arunachal is in advanced stages of approval of an additional 7,275 carbon credits in 2024-25. Each carbon credit represents the reduction of 1,000 kilograms of carbon emissions - a testament to the government's tangible contribution towards reducing the global carbon footprint. These efforts, Khandu said, are not only critical for the environment but also open up new economic opportunities for our people - especially for our youth, entrepreneurs, and local communities. To this end, the CM said, the government is creating the Arunachal Pradesh Energy Vision and Action Plan 2047 with clear targets for the next 5, 10, and 22 years. Green energy will be our strength, our export, and our identity. PTI

India Inc. hails PM Modi's call to empower youth, bolster MSMEs

New Delhi: The country's apex business chamber, the Confederation of Indian industry (CII), on Friday hailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day call for empowering India's youth, strengthening MSMEs and accelerating the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' mission. 'CII is committed to supporting this journey by fostering entrepreneurship, facilitating market linkages for MSMEs, and enabling the skills and infrastructure needed for a truly self-sustaining economy,' the business chamber said in a statement. The milestone of Rs 1 lakh crore youth empowerment initiative of the PM-Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana, with its Rs 15,000 support for first-time job seekers, has the potential to create large-scale employment opportunities, enhance skills, and open pathways for sustained livelihoods, CII Director General Chandrajit Banerjee said. MSMEs, as the backbone of India's economy, stand to gain significantly from these measures. Increased access to talent, targeted incentives, and a stronger domestic manufacturing ecosystem will enable them to scale, innovate, and integrate more deeply into global value chains. The emphasis on indigenous capabilities, whether in high-tech sectors like semiconductors, defence systems such as the Sudarshan Chakra Mission, or renewable and energy self-reliance, reinforces the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision. "Furthermore, the success of Operation Sindoor reflects India's growing defence capabilities and underscores the imperative of safeguarding national and economic security through enhanced indigenous systems, accelerated development of advanced military technologies, and self-reliance in critical defence infrastructure and supply chains," the statement added.. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in a 103-minute Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort, marked a watershed moment for its sweeping articulation of a self-reliant, strategically autonomous, and technologically empowered nation. Framed as a roadmap to a Viksit Bharat by 2047, the speech blended policy announcements with ideological clarity, underscoring India's transformation from dependence to global confidence. Among the most ambitious announcements was the rollout of India's first Made in India semiconductor chip by year-end, alongside the opening of the nuclear sector to private players. PM Modi emphasised that self-reliance must extend to jet engines, social media platforms, fertilisers, and pharmaceuticals. The National Critical Minerals Mission and the Deepwater Exploration Mission were presented as foundational steps toward securing energy and industrial autonomy, with 1,200 mineral sites under exploration and offshore energy resources being tapped to reduce foreign fuel dependence.
