Inmate's death at prison to be investigated

The prison watchdog is investigating the death of an inmate at HMP Manchester two years ago, it has emerged. The Prison and Probation Ombudsman has issued a notice on its website saying it has started an investigation, pending the outcome of an inquest into the death of Lee Gorst, 35, on 25 April 2023. Gorst was serving a seven-year jail term for aggravated burglary in Bury on 15 June 2021. He admitted charges of robbery and threatening another person with a bladed article, namely a knife. A prison officer accused of having sexual relationships with two inmates has appeared in court. Isabelle Dale, 23, allegedly had a fling with convicted Shahid Sharif, 33, between September 1, 2021 and December 31, 2022. She is also accused of having a sexual relationship with Connor Money, 28, at the same time. Money was serving nine years for killing his best friend in a car crash while fleeing police at 147mph. Dale is also charged with conspiring to smuggle drugs into HMP Swaleside in Kent – the high security jail where Sharif was serving. She appeared at Southwark Crown Court in London today charged with two counts of misconduct in a public office in relation to the relationship with Sharif and Money. The first charge alleges she 'wilfully and without reasonable excuse or justification misconducted yourself in a way which amounted to an abuse of the public's trust in the office holder by having and inappropriate sexual relationship with a serving prisoner by the name of Shahid Sharif.' The second misconduct charge alleges she had a sexual relationship with Money between 1 September 2021 and 31 December 2022. Dale, of Portsmouth, is charged with conspiring together with Sharif, Lilea Sallis, 27 and others that are unknown to bring controlled drugs into Swaleside. She was bailed today ahead of a plea and trial preparation hearing on June 6 at the same court. Judge Justin Cole set a trial date for October 21, 2025 to last between two and three weeks. Sharif and Sallis, 27, of Brighton, are charged with conspiring with Dale and others unknown to bring controlled drugs into a Category B prison Swaleside. Sallis was also bailed for a plea and trial preparation at the same court in two weeks time. A prison officer at a high-security British prison allegedly had sexual relationships with two inmates and even plotted to smuggle drugs into the prison, a court heard. As reported by The Telegraph, Isabelle Dale, 23, is accused of having a sexual affair with Shahid Sharif, 33, at the HMP Swaleside on the Isle of Sheppey, Kent. Dale is also accused of having a sexual relationship with 28-year-old prisoner Connor Money, who is serving a nine-year sentence for killing his best friend in a car crash during a police pursuit. Dale, of Portsmouth, appeared at Westminster magistrates' court charged with two counts of misconduct in a public office. She has also charged with conspiring together with Sharif, Lilea Sallis, 27, and others to smuggle controlled drugs into the prison. She was bailed ahead of a plea and a trial preparation hearing has been scheduled at Inner London Crown Court on May 23. The alleged sexual relationships between Dale and both prisoners are said to have taken place between Sept 1 2021 and Dec 31 2022. Sharif and Sallis, of Brighton, appeared in court separately, charged with conspiring with Dale and others unknown to bring controlled drugs into category B prison Swaleside. Sharif, who appeared via video-link from HMP Manchester, is also charged with possessing a mobile phone in HMP Brixton and HMP Wandsworth between September 1 2021 and December 31 2022.

Strangeways prison should be relocated from its current "out of date" city-centre location, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has political leaders and the Ministry of Justice are understood to be in initial talks about potentially closing the Victorian-era jail, said the Local Democracy Reporting Service (LDRS)."It's out of date to have a prison where it is," said Burnham. "The clear preference to us would be to relocate the prison in the long term."His Labour colleague, Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell, said she would back the regeneration of the area around HMP Manchester, which is locally known as Strangeways. Powell said: "Clearly one barrier to regenerating the area is the future of the prison itself."We clearly need prison spaces badly, so finding an alternative will be important."I will be working closely with the council as a constituency MP to support their work to make the case for regenerating the area and finding long-term alternatives for the prison."Currently about 99% of prison places in England and Wales are occupied, with some offenders being granted early release to free up HMP Manchester accommodates 744 December 2022, the Conservative government said it would not move Strangeways prison despite councillors saying the building was "not suitable" for the modern the time, Manchester City Council leader Bev Craig warned it was "coming to the end of its natural lifespan".A 2024 report found the prison was "fundamentally not safe", with inspections discovering high levels of violence, a rat infestation, and widespread drug use.A Prison Service spokesperson told the LDRS: "Public protection will always be the number one priority and HMP Manchester is essential to locking up dangerous offenders - keeping locals safe."We will continue to work with the local councils on its future."
