Prisoners 'use drones to smuggle in takeaways' after cell bars break off windows

Metro09-07-2025
Prisoners are getting takeaways and weapons flown in via drones after bars on cell windows have broken and not been replaced, former guards have claimed.
Criminal gangs are using 'sophisticated' drones to drop enough drugs to 'destabilise' jails, a scathing new report has revealed.
And it is not just drugs – anything from McDonalds orders to knives are being physically flown in to prisoners because 'no one has fixed cell bars'.
Sam Samworth, a former guard at HMP Manchester, told Metro: 'When I worked at the prison, there were bars and mesh cages on every single one.
'But now, loads have been broken and not replaced, so drones are able to fly straight up to the windows.'
It not even entirely clear just how much this is happening, as most of the drop offs happen at night while the jail is less staffed.
A former officer at HMP Frankland, which houses one of the most secure wings in the country, told Metro: 'I walked in to cells before to find prisoners surrounded by McDonalds wrappers which they could only have got via drone.

'Most of the time we never saw them fly near. They are so quiet and so small, and they always did it at night under the cover of darkness.'
But the fear is high risk prisoners such as terrorists are able to access this lucrative network and bring more sophisticated and deadly weapons to 'hurt or kill as many people as possible'.
In May, a 25-year-old prison officer was stabbed at Long Lartin and had to undergo emergency surgery after a weapon was flown in via drone.
A current prison officer, who is friends with the victim, said colleagues 'had to put his insides back into his body' before the ambulance arrived.
He told Metro: 'Some prisoners want to martyr themselves. One day, someone will be able to bring a bomb in.
'But it seems no one is doing anything about it. There are only signs on the walls saying 'do not fly drones here' – it's ridiculous.'
Sam said: 'Prisoners are already flying knives in, what's to stop a terrorist from getting their hands on a gun?
'Most inmates know that if they are caught with a gun inside jail walls their lives will be over. But serious criminals who don't care about their own release and only want to hurt or kill people can do serious damage with one.'
He explained there is 'a lot of money to be made' sneaking contraband in via drone.
He said: 'Just one rizla paper in prison is worth £1. Can you imagine how much you will be paid for sneaking a weapon in?'
Chief Prison Inspector Charlie Taylor said: 'It is highly alarming that the police and prison service have, in effect ceded the airspace above two high-security prisons to organised crime gangs which are able to deliver contraband to jails holding extremely dangerous prisoners including some who have been designated as high-risk category A.'
He told Sky News there is also a 'theoretical risk' a prisoner could escape by being carried out of a jail by a drone.
Minister for Prisons, Probation and Reducing Reoffending, Lord Timpson, said: 'This report shows the scale of the crisis we inherited and the unacceptable pressures faced by our hardworking staff – with prisons dangerously full, rife with drugs and violence.
'We are ending this chaos. After just 500 prison places added in 14 years, we're building 14,000 extra – with 2,400 already delivered – and reforming sentencing to ensure we never run out of space again. We're also improving prisons so they cut crime, not create better criminals.
In the year ending September 2024, there were 29,881 assaults inside prison walls.
More than 10,000 of these were against staff members, according to the Ministry of Justice.
Budget cuts has caused deteriorating behaviour and well trained staff leaving, the former officers have claimed, Sam Samworth, a former guard at HMP Manchester, said.
He told Metro: 'When I first started there was a regular regime and prisoners were out most of the day, but from 2015, it was an absolute car crash.
'But prisoners are now running the jails, there is no discipline, and they are spending way too much time locked up in their cell.
'It is just part of a pipeline which is leading to bigger problems.'
'We're also investing £40 million to bolster security, alongside stepping up cooperation with police to combat drones and stop the contraband which fuels violence behind bars.'
It comes as attacks on prison staff rose, with 29,881 assaults inside prison walls in the year ending September 2024.
More than 10,000 of these were against staff members, according to the Ministry of Justice.
In April, HMP Frankland saw brother of the Manchester Arena bomber Hashem Abedi, 28, douse officers in hot oil. More Trending
One officer suffered third degree burns while two others were stabbed and needed emergency surgery.
HMP Manchester, also known as Strangeways, is home to some the 'most dangerous men in the country' receives 'regular drop offs', and has done ever since maintenance was privatised during austerity.
In December, MP Kim Johnson asked the government to 'call time on the failed experiment and bring prison maintenance back in house where it belongs'.
She said there were £1.8 billion in unreported repair costs leading to poor working conditions inside jails – and said privatisation has lead to the rising costs, meaning jailers are struggling to afford to replace them.

Emmerdale fans blow holes in Owen and John 'suicide' twist

Fans of ITV soap Emmerdale have pointed out some plot holes in the latest part of John Sugden's (Oliver Farnworth) storyline. Last week, John learnt that Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) and Tracy Shankley (Amy Walsh) were going to try and work out who killed Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter). Desperate to keep their focus off him, John realised he needed to come up with a plan – and fast. That same day, John was asked to visit Owen Michaels' (Simon Haines) house as part of his work at the surgery. When he arrived, he found Owen – the guy who spiked Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) – unconscious on the sofa. John rushed to call an ambulance, but then realise another problem of his would be solved if he just…let Owen die. In the time it took for Owen's life to slip away, John had created a story that made Owen look like he killed Nate. John wrote a note on Owen's laptop that confessed to murdering Nate, as well as revealing why he did it. He then used antibacterial wipes to clean the laptop, the door handle and Owen's neck, to ensure his fingerprints would be removed from the scene. A few days later, Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson) went to check on Owen and found him dead. DS Walsh then arrived, and later told Tracy and Cain that this man killed Nate. It was a twist that left Cain and Tracy stunned. While they have no reason to not believe Walsh, fans of the ITV soap have certainly been struggling, as they noticed multiple plot holes in the scenes that saw John frame Owen, and what followed after. Taking to social media platform X, the point mentioned the most is John's effort to clean his fingerprints from Owen's house. It's possible a post-mortem would've been conducted on Owen after his death, to determine what he had in his system when he died. As a result of this and forensics checking the house, surely they would've noticed someone had cleaned Owen's neck, the laptop, and other areas? And therefore considered that he perhaps did not end his life? 'Did they notice that all the fingerprints on the laptop and Owen's hands had been wiped clean? #Emmerdale', one fan wondered. Another pointed out: 'He didn't seem to have his 'I'm a Medic' over shoulder pack with him that he's usually surgically attached to, just a smaller brown more casual looking bag. Not suss at all that certain areas have been wiped down, whether effective print/DNA wise or not #Emmerdale.' Also on X, audience members noticed that Robert mentioned Owen's confession in the pub…without actually being told about it. 'How did Robert know Owen confessed to killing Nate? Tracey and Cain haven't told anyone; John and Liam just walked in. Plot hole klaxon! #Emmerdale', they highlighted. This week, a suspicious Robert learnt from Owen's brother Steve that they were together in Hull the day Nate died. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? It proved someone else murdered him, but Robert grew frustrated when Steve said he didn't want to tell the police, due to him and Owen attending an illegal job in the city last year. More Trending In upcoming episodes, the theory that John is too good to be true is fuelled for Robert when he learns of the many times he has saved a villager's life. It leaves Robert in with a chance of exposing him but if John works out what's going on, will it end up being someone else? Perhaps it could be Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt), given that he currently has no idea he's talking to John through the mental health charity? Robert attacked in Emmerdale early ITVX release - and not by John

The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn't aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX. Robert Sugden (Ryan Hawley) has been given a warning by someone in Emmerdale after proving that Owen Michaels (Simon Haines) did not kill Nate Robinson (Jurell Carter). Yesterday, Robert discovered that John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) had visited Owen right before he was found dead. He was incredibly suspicious, and then contacted his brother Steve to learn more about him. Steve confirmed to Robert that he was with Owen the day Nate died, which proved he didn't commit the crime. It was a huge twist for Robert, but he felt frustrated when Steve then said he had no intention of telling the police this. Steve's reluctancy to clear his brother's name was because he was attending an illegal job with Owen and didn't want the police to know. While Steve didn't want to tell them – Robert did, and wasted no time in heading to the station in this evening's episode. Unfortunately, Robert was faced with an uninterested DC Cole. He pointed out that Robert's claim isn't particularly thorough, because it comes from him and not Steve. Cole then contacted Steve, and returned to 'prove' to Robert that he was lying. Steve had told Cole that he was at a birthday party the day Nate died, and had no idea where Owen was. Robert was incredibly annoyed and had no choice but to leave. More Trending A while later, Robert was at The Hide by himself. He was enjoying a drink, but that was very quickly thrown to the floor by Steve, who had arrived a very angry man indeed. Steve grabbed Robert and told him to back off, because he doesn't like it when the police dig into his business. It was a clear message, and Robert agreed to leave him alone. He's reached a dead end but in upcoming episodes, Robert will learn more about the many times John has saved the lives of Emmerdale villagers. Legendary ITV police drama star 'helps police arrest real-life criminal'

An actor who spent nearly 25 years playing a police officer on The Bill has helped combat a real-life criminal. From 1984 to 2008 Jeff Stewart took on the role of PC Reg Hollis on the ITV drama series. The police procedural focused on the lives and work of one shift of police officers of all ranks, with the storylines following situations faced by uniformed officers working on the beat, as well as plainclothes detectives. Joining the series the year it began, Jeff first appeared in the premiere episode Funny Ol' Business – Cops & Robbers. By 2007 he was the last member of the cast remaining from that first episode. His character was written off the following year, with The Bill then ending in 2010. Now, it appears the 69-year-old actor took a leaf out of his character's playbook after stepping in to stop a crime. Earlier this week Southampton resident Mohamed Diallo, 29, appeared at Southampton Magistrates' Court, where details of the incident were revealed. The court was that after Diallo shoplifted and attempted to escape on a bicycle, Jeff jumped into action by sitting on the suspect's legs after he fell from the bike, while officers handcuffed him. 'In policing you should always expect the unexpected, but this really wasn't on The Bill for this week,' a Hampshire Constabulary spokesperson said. 'Officers making an arrest in Southampton were aided by none other than TV's Pc Reg Hollis during an incident on Wednesday 23 July. 'The officers, from Bargate Neighbourhoods Policing Team, were in the city in the afternoon when they were alerted by staff at Co-op in Ocean Way to a suspected shoplifter, who attempted to make good his escape on a bicycle.' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video They continued: 'The thief, 29-year-old Mohamed Diallo, fell off the bike during his attempts to flee, before officers pounced to make their arrest. 'To their surprise, local TV legend Jeff Stewart, who played Pc Hollis for 24 years in The Bill, came to their aid by sitting on the suspect's legs while officers put him in cuffs. 'Long since retired from Sun Hill station – but he's still got it.' In video of the arrest released by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary, officers thanked Jeff before asking for a group photo. He replied: 'No, sure, man. Well, I was in The Bill for 24 years, in the TV show. Yeah, I played Reg.' Diallo was charged with five counts of theft, to which he pleaded guilty. Diallo was convicted of the theft of £17.25 worth of coffee from a Co-op on July 23, theft of £69.90 worth of coffee and food items on July 17, and £54.50 of alcohol and coffee from the same shop on July 14. More Trending He also admitted stealing £80 of wine from a Sainsburys on July 14 and £63 worth of alcohol from another on April 22. He was released on bail and will be sentenced on August 29.
