HMVL's profit, revenue surge in June quarter
Hindustan Media Ventures Ltd (HMVL), the publisher of Hindustan and the operator of digital platform OTTPlay, saw its profit after tax for the June quarter surge to ₹ 10.24 crore from ₹ 52 lakh a year earlier. Revenue from operations rose to ₹ 182.99 crore from ₹ 162.18 crore in the year-ago first quarter, HMVL said in a regulatory filing on Monday. Total expenses in the first quarter were higher at ₹ 197.94 crore versus ₹ 188.55 crore in the year-ago period. Revenue from printing and publishing of newspapers and periodicals increased to ₹ 163.35 crore from ₹ 154.35 crore a year earlier. HMVL also said it has approved an investment of up to ₹ 20.01 crore in the equity shares or convertible equity-linked instrument (compulsory convertible preference shares) of A&A Dukaan Financial Services Pvt Ltd, the parent company of financial marketplace BankBazaar. In 2022, OTTPlay, a recommendation and content discovery platform for streaming services, launched by HT Labs, turned into a streaming service featuring content from video-streaming platforms. With the launch of OTTPlay Premium, the service now hosts multiple Indian and international video streaming services, allowing subscribers to choose from language-based or thematic subscription bundles. OTTPlay has onboarded SonyLIV, ZEE5, Lionsgate Play, Sun NXT, ShemarooMe, Curiosity Stream, ShortsTV, and DocuBay streaming services, besides international brands Hallmark Movies Now, DUST, FUSE+ and Tastemade+. Although telecom operators also offer video streaming platforms as a bundled service, aggregators such as OTTPlay, Amazon Prime Video, Tata Play, and Airtel XStream Premium widen the reach and subscriber base of platforms that may not be investing aggressively in distribution and marketing. Nimisha Priya row: Mahdi family presses for execution, rejects 'settlement'
Following the deferment of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya's execution in Yemen, the brother of the deceased has stated that the family will accept nothing less than the execution of the convict. The execution, which was originally scheduled for July 16, was postponed by local authorities in Yemen, according to sources. Nimisha Priya, who is a native of Kollengode in Kerala's Palakkad district, was convicted of murdering her business partner and Yemeni citizen, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in July 2017. Mahdi family demands death penalty In a Facebook post, Abdelfattah Mahdi, the brother of Talal Abdo Mahdi, wrote in Arabic that despite mounting pressure on the family to accept reconciliation, their demand remains unchanged: retribution, meaning the execution of Priya. 'What is achieved and heard today from mediation and attempts for peace is nothing new or surprising. There have always been efforts to mediate. This is normal and expected... But the pressure has not changed anything in us. Our demand is retribution, nothing else,' Mahdi said, according to a report by HT Media. 'Delay won't flex, pressure won't move us, and blood cannot be bought. The truth is not forgotten. Retribution will come, no matter how long the road takes. It is just a matter of time and with God's help (it will happen),' Abdelfattah Mahdi said. Intervention of Indian Muslim leader Nimisha Priya's execution was deferred following the intervention of Sunni Muslim leader Kanthapuram A P Aboobacker Musliyar — also known as Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad — in Yemen. The government of Indian had made last-minute efforts to delay the execution. According to a report by news agency PTI, Sheikh Abubakr could secure a postponement of the execution with the help of his Yemeni Sufi scholar associate, Habib Umar bin Hafiz, who was likely to visit the Mahdi family in Dhamar on Tuesday to discuss the case. Indian government's efforts in the case The Indian government earlier informed the Supreme Court that it had made serious efforts in recent days to gain more time for Priya's family to reach a 'mutually agreeable' resolution with the Mahdi family. 'There is nothing more that can be done,' Attorney General R Venkataramani, appearing for the Centre, told the court. 'There's a point till which the government of India can go. We have reached that.' The Indian side had also explored the possibility of securing Priya's release through 'diyat' — or the payment of 'blood money' — but those negotiations faced obstacles. In 2020, Priya was sentenced to death by a Yemeni court, and in November 2023, the country's Supreme Judicial Council rejected her appeal. The 38-year-old nurse is currently imprisoned in Sana'a, the Yemeni capital, which remains under the control of the Iran-backed Houthi group.

Nimisha Priya case: Yemeni family vows no mercy for Kerala nurse, ‘Blood can't be bought… truth is not forgotten'
As Nimisha Priya's execution has been deferred, the brother of the victim said that his family does not wish anything less than the execution of the convict The execution, originally scheduled for July 16, has been postponed, sources in New Delhi said on Tuesday. Priya, who hails from Kollengode in Kerala's Palakkad district, was found guilty of murdering a Yemeni citizen - Talal Abdo Mahdi - in July 2017. The sources added that the government of India has made concerted efforts in recent days to seek more time for Priya's family to reach a "mutually agreeable" solution with the other party. In the Facebook post, written in Arabic, Abdelfattah Mahdi, brother Talal Abdo Mahdi, said that despite the pressures being imposed on the family to reconcile from all quarters, their demand remains the same — retribution, or execution of Priya. 'What is achieved and heard today from mediation and attempts for peace is nothing new or surprising. Throughout our years, there have been hidden pursuits and efforts to mediate. This is normal and the pressure has not changed anything in us. Our demand is retribution, nothing else,' Mahdi said, as verified by HT Media. He stated that although the execution's postponement was "unexpected," it is important for those who tried to intervene to understand that Mahdi's family remains firmly opposed to any attempts at reconciliation. 'Delay won't flex, pressure won't move us and blood cannot be bought. And the truth is not forgotten. Retribution will come no matter how long the road takes. It is just a matter of time and with God's help (it will happen),' he added. In 2020, a Yemeni court handed Priya the death sentence and the country's Supreme Judicial Council dismissed her appeal in November 2023. The 38-year-old nurse is presently lodged in a jail in Sana'a, the Yemeni capital city that is under the control of Iran-backed Houthis. In Delhi, sources said the government of India has been rendering all possible assistance in the case since beginning. Priya's mother Premakumari travelled to Yemen last year as part of efforts to secure her release. The Indian side had even explored the option of securing Priya's release through "diyat" or paying "blood money". But that also ran into some problems, it is learnt.
